Blood For Water: Fighting for the Rainy Season in Mexico

  • Our Vice Mexico team took us to La Esperanza. A little town in the nowadays violent state of Guerrero where indigenous people have the very lovely tradition of beating the shit out of each other in order to ask the gods for a good rainy season.
    Our host, Lucia Anaya got to be a part of a full day of drinking mezcal, dancing, praying and inflating turkey stomachs as if they were balloons. Then, the people of La Esperanza took us to the battlefield, where once a year they meet up with their neighbor town and fight against them. The tradition says that every drop of blood will turn into a drop of rain, and Lucia was determined to drop some blood in the name of La Esperanza.

    Ah, gotta love those good old mesoamerican traditions. Always nice and bloody with plenty of alcohol.

    • @PeppoMusic
      @PeppoMusic 9 лет назад +5

      ***** Psychedelics, and alcohol as well actually, they had alcohol pretty early on and was naturally attributed to a few gods and rituals surrounded it eventually. Look up mezcal and pulque. Both sacred and of ritualistic importance.

    • @PeppoMusic
      @PeppoMusic 9 лет назад +7

      ***** Lolno. Alcohol is one of the most common inventions that occurs in even the most secluded of civilizations and tribes. All you need is starch/sugar rich products, let those 'accidentally' sit for a while in some water and you have a good chance to get a 'religious experience' out of drinking what's basically rotten food.
      There's some evidence suggesting that we've been drinking fermented beverages (what we know as alcohol) as far back as the stone ages.

    • @ramazanalikhan732
      @ramazanalikhan732 9 лет назад +10

      Pepijn Rietveld Mexicans drink Mezcal and Tequila, Russians drink Vodka, The Irish drink Whiskey and Americans drink Budweiser .. LOL

    • @ramazanalikhan732

      Pepijn Rietveld Alcohol was invented in The Muslim world, son.

    • @PeppoMusic
      @PeppoMusic 9 лет назад +6

      Ramazan Alikhan Sure. But it was invented in a lot of different places as well. Because it's not that difficult of an invention. There's archaeological evidence of people in neolithic China, almost 7000BC (before it was China) that suggests they were producing fermented beverages. (thus, alcohol). The Georgians had wine as far back as 6000BC. And the list goes on, all invented seperately and before the beginning of Islam. Just look at the wikipedia for the history of fermented beverages and be sure to check the sources. ;)

      ***** just because someone has religious beliefs that doesn't make them rational. rational is the idea of being logical about a situation and yes praying to god is illogical (even if you are religious there are many arguments for this) just like making people bleed wont make it rain.
      Don't get me wrong you are entitled to spirituality but at least don't be so deluded and illogical to say praying or blood worship will do anything. But again its your right to be deluded.

    • @o3MTA3o
      @o3MTA3o 9 лет назад +1

      ***** just because someone believes something doesn't automatically make it rational. the indigenous people of papua believe that eating the brains of their enemies makes them stronger. that it infuses them with the power and spirit of that person. is this rational? one would argue no since all it's gotten them is kuru (human version of mad cow).

The indigenous people live in all The Americas, the real Americans in USA are the Apaches, Comanches, Sioux, Dakotas, Lakotas, Cherokkee, etc etc... These people of the video are Mexicas who speak Nahuatl. Nahuas were a civilization also known as The Aztec Empire... A civilization that was more developed than you and your tribe.

    Americans should really start realizing the significance of Mexico (and Latin-American) culture for these people, and keeping in mind that capitalism is a culture homogenizer, slowly converting millenary traditions into a culture of consumerism as the only way of reaching happiness. It's just sad that this is happening all around the world, and that those who oppose to this ridiculous cultural change are seen by many as violent revolutionary enemies. The message here is: Tolerate and accept other's beliefs, you can even become wiser if you stop and listen to what people from different cultures have to say. Viva Latinoamérica. (sorry for bad english).
