- in honor of the immortal BARBARA COOK - I couldn't find a good copy of this online, so I felt morally obliged to share this one. Quite possibly my favorite number by her on video. From the live telecast.

Wow. Such an evocation! Brought a little moisture to the eye.
Barbara Cook and Alfred Drake in their element. Both were perfect performers for their roles. Later that year, Ms. Cook would open in The Music Man as Marian the Librarian. The rest is history.
Fabulous, just fabulous! Alfred and Barbara made such a delightful sound! They looked like they enjoyed each other as well...
Drake is such a boss that it's a little hard to believe him as a desperate little jester, but they both of course sound immortal.
What a cast, two absolute giants of the Musical Stage.
I have only seen The Yeoman of the Gaurd with Tommy Steele. I never thought to look for any other copies of it here on RUclips. I can't believe how Barbara Cook looked here. She was always a wonderful singer. She will be missed.

I learned this song in my local Renaissance Faire theater group, but had heard infrequently as a child. Still love it. 💖

Bang on! Just as it should be. Amongst the best performances ever of, "I have a song to sing" but see also , Lisa Milne & Mark Stone, BBC Concert Orchestra, Proms 49, 2012. Sadly, alas, both much better than ENO 2022.

I saw Barbara Cook in 2000 on Bway in her 1 woman show. She sang the entire 2 hours with some chit chat and knew every lyric. Only once did she forget and needed a cue. It was heaven being in her presence.
I saw her in London. We have to keep in fine fettle & perform till we drop!

I am an avid Alfred Drake fan and G&S fan and I had no idea that he ever performed the role of Jack Point! I would love to hear his rich tone quality and elegant diction in some of the patter songs!
@@jegraham440 His first job on a Broadway stage was in the chorus of 'The Mikado', but as far as I know this was his only major G&S role. For that matter, John Raitt's professional debut was the chorus of 'Pinafore'. Would have been so lovely to hear them in other roles. I have heard Gordon MacRae in a few G&S adaptations on his late '40's-early'50's radio show The Railroad Hour. I heard that these are acquireable now but not sure how.

Hallmark Hall of Fame, April 1957, NBC. A full LIVE production on a soundstage (somewhat edited for length) for "TV sweeps week". It was originally broadcast in color in NY, but the B&W kinescope is all that remains.

I think he sounds better than she does. She’s great, but she pushes her chest voice up so high that I’m always afraid that the highest note in every phrase seems the highest she can hit….dumb comment….just an opinion. And what I hear….
He was incomparable. A voice perfectly placed from top to bottom, very musical and a skilled actor to boot.
