- Tommy Steele performs as Jack Point and Laureen Livingstone as Elsie Maynard in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta 'Yeomen of the Guard' in 1978.
An really excellent performance by both Laureen and Tommy. Glad to have stumbled upon this clip.
I thought he was just a pop singer but now I learn that he is really great!
Really marvellous - I keep coming back to see it again - Tommy Steele absolutely great.
Right from the beginning Tommy Steele was a versatile singer, actor and comedian. So glad to have found this .
In 1978 or 79, I watched this TV performance and was dubious beforehand, about Tommy Steele's casting as the jester. I shouldn't have felt that way. His voice and acting were perfection. He fitted in with the required style of G and S acting and music. I was genuinely amazed at his versatility and the quality of his singing. Curiously, the recording seems to dampen the range of his singing but, even so, he comes across strongly and in perfect character. The entire opera was and is magnificent. Steele was knighted in 2020, I think.
Never rated Tommy Steele as pop singer.... But I think he's superb in this role, and I appreciate his voice now.... play this clip often
Tommy Steel playing Jack Point knocks all of the best Savoyard portrayals into a cocked hat!! The best ever, a superb batter song artist!!
geoff smith Absolutely! Best Jack Point ever, with the sole exception of Sir John Reed.
RKHageman And Martin Green. He was tragedy incarnate.
John was never "sir"
Tommy is still appearing on stage (in musicals) I saw him a couple of years ago in "Scrooge" aged 80,and his voice was still strong and lyrical;and his performance was full of energy.
A Paradox Gracious! That’s wonderful!
This makes me weep. The jester, and this song was the last performance my father did before he died in 1972. I will always associate this to my dad.
My dad played the Jester too. He died in 1966. I was three. This song brings me to tears as well.
Never knew that Tommy Steele sang this song so well.
I love Laureen Livingstone and Tommy Steele singing " I have a song to sing oh! ' - and the whole play ' The Yeomen of the guard ' -- so beautiful !!
This is a brlliantly constructed song. Just brilliant.
Me neither, never knew Tommy Steele had such a beautiful voice. BRILLIANT!
The picture is a bit blurred. He had a nice voice but he knows how to put it over. He mimes the bell with his head & the "popinjay" with his legs! I saw him at the Tower. Unfortunately this revival cast of the fine Besch production wasn't filmed there. The original cast of it was. In black & white on the television. I'm sorry they didn't have an excerpt from "Cinderella" (musical) with Tommy as Buttons & this role in the interesting profile of him on Channel 5 t. v..
This is sheer perfection.
Lovely, lovely song
That song is so beautiful and Tommy Steele... well, he is, too! As I said before I love the slacks. I'd kinda like to see the whole opera. This is my favorite opera(I don't usually like opera!).
It was performed in the grounds of the Tower of London and I sat and watched it all the way through - it was marvellous
Well, this is comic opera, operetta, really, so it's easier to like.
I loved Tommy Steele. A superb all round entertainer & sculptor
Love Elsie Maynard and Jack Point singing ' I have a Song to Sing Oh! ' - so beautiful the whole show : Yeoman of the Guard !
I'd no idea he had such a lovely singing voice. Wow. Wish I could see the whole thing, eh.
wonderful absolutely
try Amazon they might have DVD
Loved him as the leprechaun in Finian’s Rainbow. He was so adorable.
Brilliant, my first record was Tommy singing Handfull of Songs, bought a new needle for our wind up record player at the same time LOL
Would have loved to see this operetta, with Tommy in it.
I have a song to sing, O
(Sing me your song, O)
It is sung to the moon by a love-lorn loon
Who fled from the mocking throng-o
It's the song of a merry man moping mum
Whose soul was sad and his glance was glum
Who sipped no sup and who craved no crumb
As he sighed for the love of a lady
Hey-di, hey-di, misery me, lack-a-day-de
He sipped no sup and he craved no crumb
As he sighed for the love of a lady
I have a song to sing, O
(What is your song, O?)
It is sung with the ring of the songs maids sing
Who loved with a love life-long-o
It's a song of a merry maid pearly proud
Who loved a Lord and who laughed aloud
At the moan of the merry man moping mum
Whose soul was sad and his glance was glum
Who sipped no sup and who craved no crumb
As he sighed for the love of a lady
Marvelous
Tommy Steele was up for Dick van Dyke’s role in Mary Poppins. He would have have been great. Who knew he had such a good voice .
His accent would have been better too!
Perfect.
I am stunned at how good TS is here and how different he sounds from his singing in Half A Sixpence/Finian's Rainbow. Was never much of a fan of his too frenetic style. It's always a thrill to see another side of a performer one always had little use for.
I still think YEOMAN is the best G & S...
Ramon Gawlitta
Every G&S is the BEST G&S.
Shy of the Holy Trinity, the greatest Triumvirate ever.
G&S what more can I ask for
When will this be released on DVD?
It is all happening and the dream maker.
Lovely production!
But really...... "240p" was the highest res you could get this video in? 🤔🤨😕😟🙁☹
How much is live and how much is a studio recording mimed to? No criticism, just curious how they made these. (I do find the lady's highly operatic singing to be a bit out of place, she could moonlight at Glyndebourne)
I've got a handful of songs to sing you...
What's the name of the delightful lady with whom TS sings?
According to one of the other video clips it's Laureen Livingstone.
Jack Point?
She should have toned it down, to match Steele's register, volume and delivery. It's like they are in two different productions.
What does this man have to do to get a knighthood ?
He has it!
The Peter, Paul & Mary arrangement and cover of this song is way better.
But they sing it only as a standalone song. This is an essential the theme of the G&S operettta. Jack's soulful rendering comes at the climax. I advise you to go and see it.
Sing along with elmo
Sadly over-performed. cf; Lisa Stone & Mark Stone, BBC Singers & Concert Orchestra. PROMS 49, August 2012. Or, just as good; Barbara Cook, Alfred Drake, 1957. Sadder still, these are all better than ENO 2022. "Heigh-dee", indeed...
Side Show Bob did it better.
Nah.
