How To Know When To Change The Bit During A Project, CNC Router
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 26 янв 2022
- This CNC router tutorial video teaches you how to know when you need to change the bit in your CNC router during a project run. When you design a project that has more than one router bit, such as a v-bit and a down cutting endmill bit, you need to know what steps are needed and how the post-processor is set up to make sure the bit change takes place.
In this tutorial, we use the Longmill CNC router, gsender (g sender) control software and Vectric Vcarve, with an acrylic project with an LED lighted base, using an o flute bit and an engraving bit.

This series of videos has given me the confidence to finally take the plunge into CNC, you have made the fear of the software a distant past and given me the urge to put my hand in my pocket and start on a new adventure
DerekGranger, I am so excited for you to start your new journey brother! Welcome to the wonderful world of CNC.
Great information for me being a biginer Garrett ,Thanks allot !
Louis, you are so welcome brother!
Garrett, your video was very informative. I have never carved Acrylic but after watching this I am going to try. Sorry for your loss.
Shephen, thank you brother. Let me know how carving Acrylic goes, I'm excited to hear about it.
Great video Garrett.
Condolences on loss of Maddux. Lost my 11 y/o grandson Jesse June 19, 2023 in auto accident.
I will order one of these drag bits next month so i can do something like this for his mother. Ms. KaDee.
KaDee, thank you for the kind words my friend. And my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your grandson. My heart goes out to you all. I'm looking forward to seeing your beautiful projects to come.
Thanks for being a teacher, between you and Paw Paws workshop I have learned a ton from you guys and I am not new to CNC but I feel Inventables dumbs it down to much and you don’t learn true cnc and Gcode. I love V carve for my openbuilds 1010 machine I purchased fusion 360 and could never even figure out step one. Wasted $600
Steven, happy to hear my videos have been helping you brother!
Like it, another one that might go hand to hand with this video is: hoedown know what. Bit we should use
sfg18b, great suggestion my friend! Thanks!
First all, I am sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how tough that must be for your daughter.
I just got in my CNC and I'm ready to rock with some CNC work brother! Thank you for your great instruction videos!
Hi Jon. thank you for your thoughts. Welcome to this amazing new world of CNC, and to your new addiction!
I'm so sorry about your grandbaby, and thanks for your RUclips channel. I'm very green with this. I just bought a cheap cnc and am now trying to learn
Frank, thank you brother. Happy to have you here, keep working hard and learning everything you can!
Great information. Not sure I understand all of it but I’m learning.
Ken, it will sink in over time. You can always come back to this video to get a refresher.
Thanks for reminding all of us what really matters. And for opening my eyes to using acrylic. Always wondered about how you know when to change bits….
You are so welcome Terry. Knowing when to change bits is tricky, so i'm happy you that much better at CNC than you used to be.
Thanks for the video and to remember not to take any life forgranted, you brought tears to my eyes
Jeffery, sorry for the tears brother. But, you are so right. Life is short my friend.
More great info. You are my video mentor!
Keep watching. More to come.
Nice video learned something new Thank you Garrett
Hi Dale. Good. what did you pick up from this one?
Garrett, this was a great video especially the sections where you show how the Collett works. It may surprise you but this is the first video I recall where someone shows how to use a one and before I was always guessing which side goes up. Even the very simple stuff needs to be taught to us newbie’s. I’ve enjoyed your videos and have been purchasing bits from you for a while now. I also have been watching Mark Lindsay’s videos including the one where you interviewed him recently you guys are very helpful. Mahalo
Dennis, we all start off as newbies brother! I'm glad to be a part of your CNC journey and hopefully make things a little easier! Mahalo my friend.
Great video!!! Answered a ton of questions. Excellent presentation. Well done Garrett!!!!!
Thank you David. And I'm definitely glad it gave you some understanding of this whole thing.
Just what i needed to learn as i am going thro a project that needs a tool change absolutely marvelous thanks heaps Garrette
Emile, glad to help!
As always right on point, exactly what I needed at this time. Sorry for your families loss. It's a hard one to overcome.
Hi Steve. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm glad the timing of this video was right for you.
Mr. Garrett your videos are always my go to videos when I am stumped. As to why I’m watching this video now. Thanks for your videos 👍🏻 By the way I love my bit set.
Im happy to hear that you like your bit set Travel Camp! CNC can be tricky, so im happy that videos like this help you so much!
Terrific video as always Gman.
Thanks bro
Another awesome video. Great explanation and a wonderful idea / product / project providing a nice tribute. Gives me some ideas.
Hey brother. It's actually a hot market for stuff like this.
Good tip on reviewing the tool movement
Hey King. Yes, it's one of those little things we don't think about.
Fantastic!!!
Glad this video helped you out MrDakman.
Very informative Garrett. I’m learning a lot from you. I will need to find out how I shut off my spindle to do a drag but I will figure it out. Thanks so much. Jim
Jim, glad I could help! A step in the right direction could be editing your g code and removing your spindle speed line. It will look something like S16000 for a 16000 rpm spindle speed or S18000 for a 18000 rpm spindle speed etc. Hope this kind of puts you in the right direction! Also, you can check out my videos on glass engraving they might be helpful too!
Garrett: thanks for another great CNC video, I really enjoy your work, the etching on the acrylic was great, I have also watched the one where you did a etching on glass. It was just as good. These videos show your passion for the CNC community and it is appreciated . I think we need more projects like this one, where what we make is more than a widget and more of a project that can live on for others. Thanks again for all you do for the community. By the way, I tried to open the survey link and it seems to be removed.
Gene, you're so welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You're absolutely right about these project videos, they definitely bring out my passion for CNCing. I'm hoping to get some more project videos rolling out soon! Sorry for the confusion to the link, I ended up taking that survey down! Keep up the good work my friend!
Ny condolences on your loss.
Great video, although from the title I expected a discussion on when to change bits due to wear. No problem, I learned a lot. I am curious as to why you chose to zero off the machine bed and not the work surface?
user-qx4yb9kn6h, thank you my friend. Glad you liked this one! Zeroing off the machine bed or the work surface are both great options brother! If you plan on performing a lot of carvings where you loose your Z zero due to machining, it is best to zero off the machine bed!
Codelecias for yiur lost.thank you for sharing your knowledge.gd luck.
Thank you Cup. Happy to hear that this video helped you.
Awesomeness!!!
Dan, glad you liked this one brother!
I have the bases, and the video motivated me to get the acrylic and get of my butt and make some. Thanks Garrett!
I am glad to hear this. Acrylic is so easy to make
Wonderful video and as usual very detailed instruction. Really heartwarming acrylic piece for your daughter. Look forward to being able to do this as well. Again thank you for sharing. Look forward to the next video.
Thanks Ron. More videos are coming for you
!
@@IDCWoodcraft looking forward to them
❤️🙏 Thank You.
Hi Travel Camp. You are welcome. How did this video help you?
You asked for comments so I'll give you a couple. Don't have my glasses on right now so I might misspell a word or two.
Firstly I'd like to thank you for posting your technique to finding the x & y. I would have never thought about dividing by two and it has saved my butt plenty of times because of the way that gSender is programmed. I don't like it. To be clear I like the interface but I don't like their programming practices and thats the reason for the rest of my comment.
I'm glad you mentioned that gSender will send the router back to its original position because mine doesn't. I would love to know what I am doing wrong. Mine just raises to its safe height and stops and than I have to press the Go button to return to zero.
I imagine that only works when you have those switches installed I dunno? I have not installed mine because they easily fall off and one of them the light doesn't come on so I don't trust it.
Speaking of gSender, they always do updates during the week but yet they don't improve anything! I think they are drinking their Starbucks coffee and making it look like they are doing something to get paid.
Here are a couple of issues I don't agree with that they should fix...
the laser buttons - there does not need to be two buttons to turn on the laser on &off. There only needs to be one. Its a pain in the butt to look back and line up the laser, while it is on, and look back so you can turn off the laser. All the whole it is burning your material even at the lowest setting. Using ONE button for both functions is an easy fix. Just initialize a Count variable to zero and when the start button is pressed it adds 1 to 0. O for off and 1 for on. No problem.
Secondly- the updates will NEVER let you know it is done nor does it even show how it is progressing. The updates will last for hours and hours and hours and never let you know to restart the program. Hell, I dunno if its even downloading anything at all. Even your cell phone lets you know when it is done updating So, they need to fix that but they continue ignoring it because of their Starbucks coffee.
Thirdly and speaking of safe height. What good is it when that is not programmed right either? Let me explain...
I know that gSender has the ability to read the text file cause it reads the text file when the start button is pressed. It could also read the text file when the "Go X0 Y0" button is pressed but it does not. Lets say you fasten down a piece of 1 inch wood and you zero from the bottom near your work piece. If you zero from the bottom and then press the button to go home guess what? It rams into your work piece because your safe height is set less then one inch! When that Go button is pressed it should read your text file to check the height of the wood (I know it can because it displays a picture of the thickness before I even start) and then add that to the safe height so this will not happen!
But again, they aren't making any real improvements because they are drinking coffee on company time just making it look like they are doing something.
Here is another thing I am angry about. Scienci acknowledges a glitch in their system. Well that glitch has tried to break my bits a couple of times and it has even broken two factory installed bolts on the z-carriage (those small black ones next to the router) which they refuse to acknowledge. They wanted me to send video but at the time I did not have a phone that could video. I told them the problem but yet he refused to acknowledge the glitch even when I told him its in the pdf file that they put out but yet I couldn't get help so now I'm stuck with a broken carriage cause it tried to ram sideways through the aluminum block at high speed not to mention going through some wood at very high speed which was not in the g-code!
Updadates my Butt! I'm saying that in jest but when I see that update thing I take it really lightly cause I know its not going to do anything but I'm used to it now.
Iwannaapple, you couldn't be more correct about the points you made brother. Have you tried reaching out to gSender/Sienci to give them the feedback on their software? They will be happy to help and I know they would appreciate the feedback.
@@IDCWoodcraft
I may have even said it on their website. Dunno. Might try it again. But, love what you do and keep doing it.
How about doing a video on 3 or 4 odd shaped bits and entering them in. Especially the tapered ones without using your spreadsheet which is very useful by the way. Glad you came out with it. Took a bit but I figured it out for carbide create. I see you ( forgot what it's called right now) used a separator for the name of the sheet. Slight error but I caught the hint and fixed it so it lists right. Very handy. Thank you.
Wanting to do 3d but I have no idea under which columns to put the tapered bit I have. Different folks display different info and word it different than carbide create.
Very sorry to hear about the loss connected to this acrylic project. Losing a family member is too painful.
Most people take life for granted whilst busy in this world. The first time I saw a funeral and asked and learnt that we all will leave this world one day, is what made me think about life. It has changed me and my perspective on life forever.
What is the z probe you are using and can i buy it also from your links?
I ordered the full beginner set of bits from your amazon store. Just had an issue with the order but I'm sure it will get fixed.
Just got my first CNC machine before watching your videos, or I would have certainly bought a Long mill as per your suggestion. I definitely consider you as my mentor in the world of CNC.
Subscribed to your channel.
Macvideoworld, welcome aboard to the channel and thank you for all the kind words my friend. Here's the link to the touchplate I use: bit.ly/3ktgiBi.
I'm sorry the Amazon order has given you issues. Please send me an email at garret@idcwoodcraft.com and I'll help get everything sorted out!
I think the biggest obstacle for your channel to grow very large, is how very (focused) small your target demographic is. most of the people putting out content about using a cnc also put out other woodworking projects like building a table, tool reviews, how to videos on a wide range of woodworking projects. when you look at content creators that JUST put out content about CNC topics what has been there subscriber rate?
Thanks for your thoughts on this, Eycandy. I have a very specific audience by design.
Thanks for your another informative video
But i had an question if you help me
I want to know how to find x & y position & bit starting point or xy zero on round workpiece or circle or any uneven complex workpiece objects
& last but not least you are a very strongheartet person i have ever seen, your story reminds my past 😢 about someone i lost. God bless your family.
Stongheart, that is a very tricky one to answer over comments brother! A lot of other CNCers have asked me for a video like that so it is on the to do list. I will keep you in the loop
So sorry about your sweet grandson.
Thank you for the video. I was wondering how bit changes go.
Now I need to buy mor bits from you.
Reida, thank you for the kind words my friend. I'm glad the video was helpful and I'm looking forward to getting your new bits out to you soon!
Great and touching video. I watch all your videos to make sure that I do not miss any steps.
One question, is there a reason to set the Z for the drag bit to waste board surface vs top of the acrylic?
Hi Mike. I actually had an explanation in the video about that, that I editted out. Because I don't want to cut into the waste board in case the material is thinner than what we set (which happens more than you think)
Many thanks, Garrett. Please know my condolences are with you and yours for Maddox. I see your pass depth for acrylic is .1 in. Would you use the same pass depth for glass? Many thanks for all you do.
Norman, if you're using a diamond engraver bit yes it will be the same 0.1 in. But you won't want to use glass with a Vbit or Oflute! I recommend taking a look at the IDC Woodcraft app, we have all the feeds and speeds and materials listed in there for you to make your life easy!
Loves the videos. What led light pucks were you using. I’ve learned a lot by watching the videos
Hey Jacob, glad I could help! I listed the LED lights in the "details" under the video in a couple different quantities if you want to check them out. Here's the link for the set of 4 → amzn.to/3IKINo8
Hi Garrett, What a special project I always learn from your videos and this one is no exception. I was able to catch on to how turning the touch plate over found the xy zero point and the touching off with paper technique. I do wonder though, If you set the z axis to zero on top of the acrylic and do the cutting, I would think you would have to make an adjustment to the drag when the z axis was set to zero on the spoil board. Maybe I missed the operation of setting the z axis to zero before the cutting operation.
Frank, glad to hear you learned so much from this video brother! Here is a video on how to zero your machine in a little bit more detail. I think that it will really help you: ruclips.net/video/UaDMzl_ZXVg/видео.html
Great video you are a great teacher. Here is my question when did you add the second code?
Hey CJ, I'm not quite sure what you mean on this one. Can you tell me what time mark on the video you're talking about?
Beautiful project. But my question is why use one but or another, particularly with wood designs?
ElCidPhysics, I have a video that should really help you. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/wdQ-_hllmKY/видео.html
What's that saying about great minds? Yesterday, I was just thinking that you needed to review the use of the dragbit for me. Tear jerker too. Thanks 😌
I heard your thoughts. That's why I did this video
@@IDCWoodcraft Oh, Oh! I'd better keep clean thoughts then.
Thanks for the detail. Why do you zero Z to the spoilboard rather than the top of the material? Wouldn't that make the etch possibly imprecise if you material thickness wasn't exactly as expected in your carve setup?
Racm, you are exactly right but both methods have imprecision. If you zeroed to the top of the material and it was wavy or distorted, you might zero on a spot that is either high or low. We solve this by surfacing the piece of wood to be perfectly flat if our concern is flatness.
I thought when you zero Z you would have left the probe on the material, but you removed it and flipped it over. Can you explain that process? Great video!
Jason, if you look at the probe there is a partition that you can use where you can align it against the corner of a piece of wood to zero the X and Y axis. But if we placed it in that direction in the center of our project, it wouldn't sit flush. We flip it over to allow it to sit flat on our project so we can just zero the Z axis.
Very helpful. Answered some questions I had. One thing I didn't see on this video was after you finished your first tool operation that you didn't load the tool path for your drag tool. Or did I misunderstand something?
You're correct. I guess I didn't think it was relevant to this video. You taught me a lesson. Never dismiss what I think might be irrelevant. Thank you
Any chance you have a video on using the Tiling process? Thanks
Hi Bryan. No tiling videos yet. Getting to it.
😁😳😭😢😍😍😍 very beautiful amazing that you could do that and make her feel so much better
Eddie, thanks it definitely meant a lot to me!
So sorry for your loss! Great video as always. Do you sell the drag on your site? May God comfort you and your daughter in these hard times!
Hi Ted. The drasg bit can be gotten here → bit.ly/3tRy98s
And thank you for your thoughts
I have 6 kids and I forget just how fortunate i am to have them all healthy and alive.. My condolences on all of your losses.. Thank you for your stories in all the comments. 💔
ClinToneCust23, thank you my friend for your condolences and happy CNCing.
What is the smallest font you can use with the diamond bit? The fonts I use are generally Arial but need to be about 1/8” in height. I use a tapered diamond bit currently as the regular engraver bits do not leave a clean cut in Cast. Thanks in advance. Great info as always.
That's a question that's a little difficult to answer, because I haven't gotten to the smallest font yet that I can create. Leave it to say, I have engraved font at a 16th of an inch
New to CNC how does this video relate to the software that came with the Shark 510 is gsender the equivalent to Ready to Control?
Hi Rick, that's a great question! Those two software packages are equivalent but gSender is free to download. Try gSender, you might like it brother.
We are thinking of a CNC and watching your videos.
You suggested a PDF, where can we get the PDF?
Bob and Lucille
Lucilleconrad, Here is a link to the PDF brother. It is a download PDF of all videos on this channel (sorted for the beginner) → bit.ly/3mLHGfI
Can I please get your advice on a cnc for basically small projects?
Cribbage boards, small engraving, etc...
Clark, I know choosing a machine can be tough brother. Of course, I'm a little biased being a longmill guy myself! But there are a lot of really great machines out there. I always recommend going with the machine and company that feel like the right fit for you and what you're looking to create. At the end of the day, that's what matters most!
Sorry I didnt say what I meant. When describing saving the tool path. I have been using UGS . Also when I do my work starting from the center but want to start from the edge, do I have to go back and change that before I save the file.
Harold, when you want to set your zero to the edge of your project, you have to change it in the design software you are using and save the file again.
Great as Normal ! Can we get a re-squaring video ! lets use changing the Vwheels and then getting the Longmill squared only using the software not tools, and then how to Confirm its 99% square with a tool. That would be a great video with you explaining it. not sure why my machine wont cut X ina straight line it veers up 1/8" no matter how i square. someone else's tricks might help
Hi Jay. I'm waiting for the new MK2 to do this video you requested. Should be about next month.
Hi Garrett is the gsender works on omni cnc router 1325
JuanMedina-en8xn, I would recommend reaching out to Omni about that specific question. All machines are different and they will know for your specific machine!
Whas the spinning motor OFF while you used the "Diamond Drag Engraving Bit" ?
diegosf1023, you're absolutely right brother. While using the diamond drag, you won't need your motor spinning!
I guess you are setting z to zero on the spoiler board because you flipped the acrylic over and carved the letters in backwards. is that right? also I would like to see the design video, maybe you explain in there.
Doug, you are right on that one brother, for that part of the project I zeroed onto the spoilboard. I have a clamp project where I show you how I set the zero off the spoilboard and set it up in the software. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/b9miRXZGd1I/видео.html
can the diamond bit cut tile?
Great question Sylvia, are you talking about the Widgetworks diamond engraver? If so, then yes it can engrave tile like granite but not cut it.
I’m wondering what is the method of turning the probe block upside down when doing z
Jessie, sorry for the delay getting back to you brother this one seemed to slip by me! You don't have to turn the probe upside down for the z height my friend. Sorry for the confusion on this one!
Hi Garrett, what is the reason for cutting the tab like that, better light distribution? Please let your daughter know we all feel her loss.👼🙏
Hi Mike. i will pass on your thoughts to her.
Regarding the angle cut...yes, it is to refract the light to the wider areas.
HOW CAN I GET THECLAMPS? DID YOUMAKE THEM ON 3DPRINTER?
Juan, take a look at this video. Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/b9miRXZGd1I/видео.html
Hope it helps brother!
Not sure where we are to send questions to about your bits and what I seem to be doing something wrong.
Mark, you can send me over an email brother and I'll be happy to help!
I am very new to cnc and vcarve. I have created a file to do a crib board. the file has multiple bit changes. I air ran it the first time to see when it prompts me to change bits. it ran the first part of the file and came back to xy. I was ready to change the bit and set the z again. but I can find no where that it tell me what bit to put in next. it is somewhere,. dan
Dan, I know it can be tricky at first brother. But it sounds like it's running how it should be then my friend. It shouldn't be prompting you of which bit to change to, you'll have to know that from how you designed the file. It will get more natural the more you run it! Keep up the good work!
Longmill gonna kick out an automatic tool changer?
Not for a while
do you have to do this every time I save a file
Harold, every time your load a different file with a different tool, you will have to change your bit and reset the z zero height. Does that answer your question? Maybe you could be a little bit more specific brother!
didnt find survey
Hi Paul, I put the link to the survey in the video description. I know it can be a little hard to see it though! Here's the link: bit.ly/3fLNmBY
I was thinking this is an instructional video of how to tell if your bit is dull and needed to be changed.
Timothy, sorry brother I haven't created a video like this yet!
WATCHED THE VIDIO, LOT OF INFO BUT STILL DONT KNOW WHEN TO CHANGE THE BIT.
Hi Fred. When the first program completes, then you change the bit and load the second program
I like audio books and I would like to suggest one that I think will help you a great deal. its called 100 million dollar offer by alex hormozi. he also has a youtube channel.
I will crtainly give this one a listen. Thank you
ps so sorry about your daughter, we lost our only child also. age 25 i know its hard. Blessing
Paul, thank you and thanks for sharing, it's really though. I'm so sorry about your loss too. Sending you and your family nothing but love and blessings as well my friend.
I hope your videos were shorter, you talk to much 😂 but very helpful, thanks so much
Jusandjus, sorry brother I'll try not to talk your ear off too much next time I tend to get excited with this stuff!
😇😇❤🙏Garrett words can not express my sorrow, But I pray each day for everyone in this same situation. Remind her, that when she walks the beach and looks back, she will only see one set of footprints in the sand that's because Maddox is carrying her.
Dave, thank you for the kind words my friend. I appreciate the support!
