Hands down THE best fighter/interceptor to ever fly. 2+ Mach, track 24 targets, shoot at 6, AND unmatched, 100 mi. fire-and-forget capability of the AIM-54C Phoenix missiles. Not to mention being flown by the best aviators west of Jupiter!
The F/A-18, F-16 and the F-15 can't even track 24 targets and shoot at 6. They only can track 6 targets and shoot 2. The F/A-18 does only Mach 1.9 top speed, while the F-16 and F-15 can do Mach 2+ The Phoenix missile had a 86% success rate.

The F-14 came to late for the Vietnam war and only one deployment about USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) with CVW-14 was made from 17 September 1974 to 20 May 1975. Even though VF-1 and VF-2 Tomcats flew combat air patrols over South Vietnam as part of Operation Frequent Wind, F-14s didn't score any MiG kill.

The tomcat was pricey and the F/A-18 has a completely different mission. The F14 was a fleet Air defence fighter/interceptor. The F/A-18 is a fighter/attack aircraft. It’s designed for a balance of the two

How/ why did they let the F-14 platform get too expensive to maintain? it's a supersonic, multi-platform airframe biting at the bit for ground attack targets. Yet we let it fall to the wayside; despite its fighter characteristics... Shame not those who let it fall by the wayside!
The National Defense Department shouldn't have let the F-14 go to be replaced by the F/A-18, although the F/A-18 cost less to build. My own opinion is, the F/A-18 is more suited for light ground attack like the A-7 Corsair II, because it is half A-7 and half F-4, that is the reason behind its dual role. The F-14 was an excellent fighter/interceptor, it could do reconnaissance and near the end of its service, do attack missions way better than the F/A-18. Aviation Machinist's Mates didn't like switching out the engines in them, because it took them 8 hours, which was a simple solution to fix, by putting quick disconnects like the F/A-18 has. When F-14's were in service, aircraft carriers and their task force didn't have as many or any (U.S.S.R.) Russian Mig and Su flybys, as well Russian Bears and Badges, as they do today with the F/A-18 Hornets. When the Russians did their flybs, it was short lived. Other than switching out the engines, the Pilots, RIO's like flying in them and maintenance crews like working on them.
Not sure about Tomcat not using afterburner on take off, there are plenty of videos showing them using them on cat. Launches and I also found this online. theaviationgeekclub.com/tomcat-single-engine-cat-shot-a-life-or-death-experience/
F-14 B and D variants were not allowed to use afterburners during cat shots. The F110−GE−400 turbofan engine used on the B/D models at military thrust(full power-dry) made the same thrust as the Pratt and Whitney engine used in the A models in Zone-3 afterburner. The reasoning was that if the B/D models had an engine out during launch, there wasnt enough rudder authority to maintain control with a single engine in afterburner. It's all in the F-14 NATOPS available online. OK I looked up the Prohibited Maneuvers. for you. This is from the F-14D NATOPS See NUMBER 6. 1. Intentional Spins. 2. During AB operations; sustained 0 to −0.5 g flight; −0.5 g to −2.4 g’s for more than 10 seconds. 3. At MIL power or less; zero or negative g flight for more than 20 seconds. 4. ' come on america... come back F-14 tomcat service again... no retirement = no restopment... america can making many more new F-14 super tomcat as F-14st
About 40 years ago one Iranian pilot made a fucking strange record for F14 by shooting down 3 Migs with only one Phoenix missile. Iran-iraq war, 3 Migs were flying toward Iran to bombard an Island in Iran, they were flying so close to each other such that radar only would show one plane, so one F14 got command to fly and dog fight them, the F14 pilot ended up with 3 Migs in the air and just target the middle Mig, its missile hit the middle Mig. Since 2 other Migs were super close they also got fire and exploited.
Those MiGs didnt even know they were being targeted, the 135 pound warhead designed to take out massive bombers in one hit took out the 3 jets flying in close formation. Their RWR gear wasnt very good and the Phoenix descended from 80,000 feet at Mach 3. They didnt know what hit them.
The 80’s had Concorde, the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 & Tornado. Now we have the no supersonic passenger plane, private space travel for only rich people, & the overpriced F35 with its problems. Welcome to the millennial era! 😢
Cheney needs to spend eternity in hell and before that the rest of his life in some windowless box. Taking bribes from Boeing to push the Super Hornet "upgrade" as a better option than a true upgrade to the Tomcats avionics to bring it in line with all the upgrades that other planes got. I mean the F4 was updated to fire AMRAAMs, as was the F-5 and numerous other "old" planes. Not the tomcat though, that was too expensive. F-18 cant do something, lets "upgrade" it by basically making an entire new aircraft with new engines, wings, etc. So now lets put both of those different planes with the same F number on boats and store parts for both, and keep crew that are trained in repair on both. And both of them have the same amount of maintenance hours as a single Tomcat, which that much maintenance was the "big problem" with keeping the tomcats.
Imagine this kicking ass in Vietnam...the Phantoms and the B-52s destroy everything on the ground while the F-14 kicks some MiG ass...prehaps if it had entered service earlier the US would have won the war.
