An F-14A from VF-102 Diamondbacks back in the early 1990's pulled just over 10G's during as Air-toAir Combat training mission in the VA Beach, VA area. I was an Aviation Ordnanceman in that squadron at NAS Oceana and was part of the over-stress team that had to go nose-to-tail to check the A/C for any stress cracks and tighten every screw. A/C performed perfectly. NATOPS did later limit the aircraft to about 7G's or so except for combat to prolong the service life of the A/C.
The F-14 the Phoenix missile and when she is on the carrier that she has she sang very loudly in her own it's just like if you hear a P-51 Mustang flying over you when you hear the F-14 she's screaming that's all lot of power that they have for that thing
This gives me goosebumps every time. The increasing tension in the RIO's voice, well cut stock footage, real-time Rules of Engagement and that deadly Sidewinder tone... EPIC!
I was attached to VF-41 on the USS Nimitz. We relieved the Kennedy not too long after this incident. The squadron depicted in this video are jets from our sister squadron at the time, VF-84.
A lot of posts are talking about this or that part of the footage showing the wrong aircraft and forgetting one major point. It is the audio portion of this that is the actual incident. The video is mostly stock footage to give users something to watch while listening, they are not the actual planes in the actual fight. Some of the MIG's even have Russian markings.
Would you kindly contact filmmakers and give them some of precious footage of a Libyan MiG-23 flight from your equally precious MiG video collection? Thank you.
Commissar Evan The reason why they retired the F-14B/D is because it was too expensive, difficult to fix it, it was meant for interceptor not multirole fighters, and they don't want Iran to get their hands on F-14 parts. So they decide to choose F-18E/F Super Hornet to replace F-14B/D.
You might want to brush up on the event a bit. The Kennedy group was 130km North of Libya basically straddling the shipping lanes between Libya and Crete. The Floggers were flying directly for the carrier group and when the Tomcats changed course to show they were not hostile, the Mig's continued to intercept the Tomcats and track with their radar. That is a hostile move no matter which way you slice it, especially since this was repeated four seperate times. The Mig's wanted blood, they lost.

All those things are true with the Eagle in Air Force configuration. By the time the F-14D was released many of those advantages had been almost nullified (climb rate/range particularly) and the avionics had been upgraded too. Now add all the weight needed to make the Eagle carrier worthy(landing gear, folding wings, structural improvements ect) and suddenly they are very similar performing aircraft for sure. It would be cool to see an eagle on a catapult though.
When I was I kid I used to look up every time I heard a jet flying over hoping to see a Tomcat. Always dissapointed that it were mostly F16's or other smaller jets. +Michel Morningstar Yeah, VF-101 Navy Grim Reapers did a mock exercise against the 159 AF F15s. 4 F-14s against 6 F-15s. Mind you, these were the F-14Ds with the 32,000 lbs increased thrust GE-110 engines. Not the old TF-30 engines. One F-14D was "shot down" against 5 F-15s were "splashed".
To everyone that is saying this is real time combat footage: It is not. It's audio of an actual engagement between two MiG 23 FLOGGERS & two F-14 TOMCATS layered over pieced together footage. Please note the following: The MiG(s) flying at 2:153:11 and again at various times in the footage are MiG 23's. The kill in this video at 5:58 is pieced together pre impact/ post impact & the aircraft is clearly a MiG 19, not the 23's the RIO mentioned at 6:46 when he called " two Floggers splashed".

F-14 Tomcat is a bad bird. But F-15 Eagle boasts 115+-0 record in air to air combat. Does any other country have a jet with this kind of record? I think not. : D
@@MrWtf4life saddam is western enemy. Do you think saddam is western ally? Look america invade his country and executed him. Because he support the hijackers at 9/11 attack. Which the hijackers can enter the palne easily and when the plane was crashed all the data including the hijackers is hidden
@@ThatPCGamingNoob ah really? If saddam was supoirt by the west, the west worry about his action. Why they worry that saddam will invade saudi arabia? How could they support saddam? Anyway saddam's weapon mostly from soviet union. He has soviet SAM and SU 22, SU 25, SU 23 jet fighters. Iran use f 14 tomcat from US.
When I was 17 I fell in love with the F14 Tomcats! I thought they were so sexy, still do. I love the retractable wings. I still love them, but the F22 Raptor is a wet dream. Fuck that jet is amazing. I like the F35s hovering capability and its extra toys, but it is kinda stubby chubby that and the fact we sell it to everyone ruins it for me where's the Raptor is ours and only ours.
Yes, why are you talking? The F-14 could carry 6 Pheonix & 2 Sidewinders but could not land on a carrier carrying that load. The standard loadout was 4 Pheonix, 2 Sparrow & 2 Sidewinder. The stress comes when pulling g. A 200lb missile would weigh 800lbs when pulling 8g in a turn. All this weight is loaded onto the launch rails, hence the stress & the need to check for any damage when the plane lands. Also pulling high g then limits the plane's lifetime.
not to be too knit picky but those F-14s were jolly rogers (skull and cross bones) from the USS Nimitz. the Navy planes that shot down the Libyan planes were from the USS America
Hi - The planes that shot down the Libyan jets were, in fact, from the USS Nimitz, CVN-68. I know because I was there on August 19, 1981, when the shootdown happened. I was ship's company on the Nimitz, and worked in the AIMD, WC630, on the AWG9 radar for the F-14. This video seems to borrow a lot of footage from the movie The Final Countdown, because the two planes were shot down by F-14s from VF-41 (Black Aces) and NOT VF-84 (Jolly Rogers).
Jay Burton and the MIGs are soviet ones, not Lybians.. is clear that they made up the video editing footage from various sources.. at least they didnt used the "MIG-28" explosion from Top Gun
sparrowlt US Air Force is "one of the most powerful weapons in the world ." Although the Libyan air force was small and not well developed compared to the United States Air Force, But a Libyan pilot leads SU-22M3K plane .. managed to bring down the F14 plane (Tom Cat) ... I think the US pilot name was Henry Martin Clement .. this is his photo facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203336222886310&set=pcb.10203336230486500&type=1
Why was variable geometry wings phased out? Was it the complexity not being worth the advantage they brought or some type of new wing design making them obsolete?
This video should have shown VF-41 not VF-84. This was VF-41 shoot down of the MIG'S over the Gulf of Sidra Libya. First time the F-14 Tomcat was put into combat. VF-84 was VF-41'S sister squadron onboard USS Nimitz CVW8
This actually is the audio from the Jan 1989 shoot down of the two Mig 23s by VF-32 Swordsmen from the USS JFK. The call sign heard in the initial contact call from the E-2 to the Tomcat flight leader is "Gypsy 207". I believe Gypsy 202 was the wingman on this flight. Gypsy was the callsign of VF-32 Swordsmen. During this incident you keep hearing "Fox one" being called by the pilot early in the engagement. This indicates an AIM-7 Sparrow missile shot. During the 1981 incident, the two VF-41 F-14s from the Nimitz killed the two SU-22s with AIM-9L Sidewinders with no Sparrows fired. I believe in this audio from the1989 incident, at least one of our Sparrows missed, however I think the 2nd Mig 23 was downed by a Sidewinder since the last couple of missile shot calls are "Fox two".
Yes, but still US/Brits were designing VTOL/STOL aircraft with better results before that Mig came out. When you say sharing 3/4 units, do you refer to the internal parts for them? Many other aircraft share parts of predecessors.
The Reason F22 falls into stealth category because of its Electronics and sensors. It is designed to see and kill the enemy, before the enemy knows he is there. The description is out of the US design requirements for 5th Generation Stealth fighters. I understand where your coming from and what you wrote makes perfect sense. If you take anyone part of those away, you have a Generation 4+ or 4++ This is why Currently only the F-22 is a true Generation 5 fighter. The T-50 is super sexy :)
Point is F22 was designed for deep penetration missions over Siberia and China where AA-defence is scarce. To be short stealth (F117) is when attacker came undetected, hit the target and gone undetected. that's all. If it is detected it's lost. Fiberglassed subsonic F117 having only thermographic camera inside took sufficient losses being stealth. Program closed. Low observables being able to dogfight - left. Priorities started to shift long ago first loss.
Why was an AO doing an Airframers job? Just wondering? Were you in QA or something? I was in 101 for a touring before going overseas, some of those nuggets did a number or two while I was there.
He was in an A4 Skyhawk, the F14 Tomcat wasn't used until 1975. It gradually replaced the F4 Phantom II (Not the Skyhawk) and was itself replaced by the F18 Hornet in 2006. There is no comparison between these planes.
With the PC culture of today the Jolly Roger will not survive. Oh my god a "skull and cross bones". Same as the Marine Corp VMAQ2 flying the EA6B. The Playboy Bunny VMAQ2 was the only squadron/military unit to be officially allowed to have/display the Bunny on their aircraft and squadron patches. Hugh Hefner personally approved the trade mark use. Hey just a little bit of trivia.
hey remind me what happened to belgrade serbbro the reason why the f117 was shot is becuase the US flied in predictable patterns. you guys shot it down completely by luck. anyway, you only shot 1 down. you were never able to shoot down the rest. mhmhmh i love the smell of depleted uranium in belgrade.
Stealth is the combination of passive low observable features and active emitters such as Low Probability of Intercept Radars, radios and laser designators. These are usually combined with active defenses such as chaff, flares, and ECM. It is accomplished by using a complex design philosophy to reduce the ability of an opponent's sensors to detect, track, or attack the stealth aircraft. This philosophy also takes into account the heat, sound, and other emissions of the aircraft. Describes F-22
They need to bring this back...scrap the fucking F-35 and bring this baby back, with thrust vectoring, performance to rival the Su-35, typhoon and rafale, and all the latest weapons tech and know-how...this was the real winner, the first line of defense against a REAL foe that's symmetrically well-equipped, not cavemen with AK-47's.
Just wondering: Can you express an intelligible thought without using the F-bomb? Is that the only adjective you know? I'm not a prude but for crying out loud, we're talking fighter jets here not your bedroom antics.
You stated, "wrote the laws by which the wing is designed and built the first wind tunnel." Frank H. Wenham was the first individual to design a wind tunnel in 1871. He was a British engineer. The Russians were not the first to write the laws by which the wing was designed, that would be Wilbur and Orville Wright, who were responsible for the first flight of man. The first aircraft to implement laminar flow over an airfoil was the P-51 Mustang. NACA was ahead of most in the world when it came
Jan Mas, you are behind the times. The F-14D was introduced in the 1990's. It had fly by wire, auto programming control surfaces, digital radar, upgraded computers, electro-optical sensors, bombing and laser designators, upgraded software, Link 16. The F-14 was never intended to be a close-in dog fighter. The point is the F-14 would still be a hot fighter, if the Navy had chosen to keep building and upgrading it.

Being a navy VETERAN, I have two words for the F14, DA SHIT. HANDS DOWN.
Loved the VF-84 Jolly Rogers aircraft... (love the paint scheme) but it was VF-32 Swordsmen that downed the MIGs.
VF-103 is just eye candy because of the skull & bones iconography. 🙄
Sure I saw a documentary about this. Was about a guy called Maverick
What a sexy but deadly aircraft the F14 Tomcat is... #inlove
To everyone that is saying this is real time combat footage: It is not. It's audio of an actual engagement between two MiG 23 FLOGGERS & two F-14 TOMCATS layered over pieced together footage. Please note the following: The MiG(s) flying at 2:15 3:11 and again at various times in the footage are MiG 23's. The kill in this video at 5:58 is pieced together pre impact/ post impact & the aircraft is clearly a MiG 19, not the 23's the RIO mentioned at 6:46 when he called " two Floggers splashed".
VF-101 Navy Grim Reapers did a mock exercise against the 159 AF F15s. 4 F-14s against 6 F-15s. Mind you, these were the F-14Ds with the 32,000 lbs increased thrust GE-110 engines. Not the old TF-30 engines. One F-14D was "shot down" against 5 F-15s were "splashed".
I believe it
so only one of the tomcats were shot down and 5 of the eagles were shot down right?
I love the growling sound of the Aim 9 lock.
The F14 ACTUALLY IMPRESSED and SCARED Russian Fighter Pilots.
Hhhhhh. You made me laughing just wake up from u are dreaming
Lolz Viktor Belenko admitted that they were aware that the Tomcat had powerful radar and longer range of missiles at that time. Thats why this aircraft shotdown vaunted MiG-25s in Iraq-Iran War
Your way of saying that the f-14 was an airplane with capabilities that made it terrifying is more a provocation because of the way it was written
@@nikolaymikoyan7645 it did kill a bunch of Russian jets
@@MichaelKing-tp6le yes in did at long range fight thanks to BVR capability but in dogfight u can dream just mig21 can choot it down
This is my squadron VF84 Jolly Roger's. We were called that because of the skull and crossbones ☠️ on the tail of our jets. Proud to have been part of that squadron. 👍👍👍👍👍
My favorite squadron the jolly Rogers tomcats!!
I was a f14 pilot and I loved it :D
F-14 Tomcat is a bad bird. But F-15 Eagle boasts 115+-0 record in air to air combat. Does any other country have a jet with this kind of record? I think not. : D
F-14 won the air war for Iran in the first gulf war against sadams strongest war machine with west behind his back
@@MrWtf4life saddam is western enemy.

@@ThatPCGamingNoob the question is why they worry about saddam action in middle east after he attack kuwait?
When I was 17 I fell in love with the F14 Tomcats! I thought they were so sexy, still do. I love the retractable wings. I still love them, but the F22 Raptor is a wet dream. Fuck that jet is amazing. I like the F35s hovering capability and its extra toys, but it is kinda stubby chubby that and the fact we sell it to everyone ruins it for me where's the Raptor is ours and only ours.
Shut up
this makes me sad because I miss it, I hate it and I'd do it again. Anytime, anywhere.
Jay Burton
That was the 1981 incident (SU-22) . this video is about the 1989 one (MIG-23)
sparrowlt Very well. The rest of comments stand; much of the video is from The FInal Countdown.
Jay Burton
and the MIGs are soviet ones, not Lybians.. is clear that they made up the video editing footage from various sources.. at least they didnt used the "MIG-28" explosion from Top Gun
sparrowlt
US Air Force is "one of the most powerful weapons in the world ."
Although the Libyan air force was small and not well developed compared to the United States Air Force,
But a Libyan pilot leads SU-22M3K plane .. managed to bring down the F14 plane (Tom Cat) ...
I think the US pilot name was Henry Martin Clement ..
this is his photo

The F-14 left one helluva pop-culture legacy. It's inspired at least three feature films, two video games, and a sci-fi franchise in Japan.

F-14 was an awesome aircraft to see when I was out to sea
The Reason F22 falls into stealth category because of its Electronics and sensors. It is designed to see and kill the enemy, before the enemy knows he is there. The description is out of the US design requirements for 5th Generation Stealth fighters. I understand where your coming from and what you wrote makes perfect sense. If you take anyone part of those away, you have a Generation 4+ or 4++ This is why Currently only the F-22 is a true Generation 5 fighter. The T-50 is super sexy :)
F-14 IS THE BEEEST!!!!
F14 should duel with MIG 25 not MIG 23. MIG23 was intended to match F4.
Why was an AO doing an Airframers job? Just wondering? Were you in QA or something? I was in 101 for a touring before going overseas, some of those nuggets did a number or two while I was there.
Fact: The F-14 was the only aircraft at the time to challenge Russia's then new Mig 25
Против МиГ 25? МиГ уйдет от ракеты на форсаже. Привет Израилетянам. ХА ХА ХА ХА ХА
He was in an A4 Skyhawk, the F14 Tomcat wasn't used until 1975. It gradually replaced the F4 Phantom II (Not the Skyhawk) and was itself replaced by the F18 Hornet in 2006. There is no comparison between these planes.
Tomcat is the best!

I love F-14 Tomcat the Jolly Roger
With the PC culture of today the Jolly Roger will not survive. Oh my god a "skull and cross bones". Same as the Marine Corp VMAQ2 flying the EA6B. The Playboy Bunny VMAQ2 was the only squadron/military unit to be officially allowed to have/display the Bunny on their aircraft and squadron patches. Hugh Hefner personally approved the trade mark use. Hey just a little bit of trivia.
When the wings sweep back and she goes supersonic 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I meant R.I.P retired Tomcats!

Shame they took it out of the sky.
VF-103 Jolly Rogers!!!!!...F14 A models were just so iconic!.
lets not forget we also shot down 2 Libyan migs in 88 with tomcats from vf 32 swordsmen from the USS John F Kennedy CV68 in the Gulf of Sidra
And we shot F117 in 1999 war....we didnt know it was invisible.....sorry.
Dusan Radin That was luck, I'd like to see you Serbians do it again.
Sure...just send more our way Luck?Keep telling that to yourself. .
Yes but VF-41 was 1st
hey remind me what happened to belgrade serbbro
the reason why the f117 was shot is becuase the US flied in predictable patterns.
you guys shot it down completely by luck. anyway, you only shot 1 down. you were never able to shoot down the rest. mhmhmh i love the smell of depleted uranium in belgrade.
I love 14 thomact the better
It does. XFV-12 and AV-8 have completely different layout. Whole Yak-141 technology was borrowed at the price of now-F35 one fin.
or we can challenge su-27 and f10 tigershark. lol.
let me see crafts from same tense and with the same flying charecteristics
The Jolly Rogers F-14 was probably the best looking plane ever.
Eye candy....that's all.
3:55 how gorgeous she is!!
Seeing this reminds me also of the cartoons Macross.. missed this awesome Fighter Jet!
If they were gonna replace the f35 with any plane it would at least be the f22
Spjungen your right the f 35 its just a stupid garbage cans
Zex Konjina--lol the "flying barrel"!!!!!!
Gary Jepsen smh prude ass
You stated, "wrote the laws by which the wing is designed and built the first wind tunnel." Frank H. Wenham was the first individual to design a wind tunnel in 1871. He was a British engineer. The Russians were not the first to write the laws by which the wing was designed, that would be Wilbur and Orville Wright, who were responsible for the first flight of man. The first aircraft to implement laminar flow over an airfoil was the P-51 Mustang. NACA was ahead of most in the world when it came
mig23? oh Tomcat Winer
Смешные такие. ))
