    The Honda CG 125 is still the best selling motercyle in my home country of Pakistan. It's considered as a manly bold macho bike. It's still manufactured there but it's not Japanese, it's Chinese. The engine and spare parts are imported form china and are assembled in Pakistan. The company Zongshen and Lifan supply honda with the parts. And are as god in quality as the Japanese. There is even a CG125 special edition model with
    Self start / kick
    Larger batter with larger chrome battery and tool cover.
    Larger rear drum brakes
    Fatter rear tyre
    Smaller wire spoked rear wheels which adds stiffness to the wheel.
    And its a very beautiful motercyle with black tank and chrome battery covers with the Honda emblem and 2 strips of parallel lines which starts form the tank and travels till the battery cover. It's a very elegant look.
    Because it's an OHV there are vibrations and complain back pain cuz of the vibrations when riding for a long periods of time.

      I didn't know it actually Chinese made, but with Honda quality assured of course. Those small cc bikes are popular in poor thirdworld countries like the one I live in. I don't usually see Cgl's here that much. But other Chinese copies of it like the one I have are extremely popular. I have a 150 copy of those. Pretty reliable though.

    • @tonyfrancisco370
      @tonyfrancisco370 2 года назад

      I'm not aware that OHV causes the vibration. There's a very similar bike here in the Philippines named Honda TMX 125 Alpha euro 3. It also have the 125cc OHV engine and 5 speed transmission. It's main rival, the Kawasaki Barako 175, is a very well known, heavy duty motorcycle used for tricycle.

    in the Philippines, that bike is mainly used for Commercial Sidecar use
    which is used for transportation of 5-7 person, rice bags 400kg, or even logs
    it's really really reliable even if you abuse it ..it will always start and go
    but it has a 155cc OHV engine 4 speed tranny and a larger rear sprocket for more torque
    it's renamed Honda TMX 155 in the 80's but back in the 70's it's a Honda CG 125

      These workhorse bikes are still sold here in the Philippines as the TMX125 Alpha. Same pushrod engine. Brand new in 2024 they sell for about $1100 USD. They are heavily marketed to tricycle drivers who work them for long hours hauling heavy sidecars loaded down with passengers... Great bikes. There's a trend here where they are cheaply customized into fat tire bobber style bikes.

    I have a pretty funny CG memory. About 10 years ago when I was about 18yo I was travelling home on my CG 125 from my job at a pub around 2AM on North Yorkshire single lane roads in cold winter. About half way home my poorly maintained CG broke down about 4 miles from my house, I was stuck in the middle of nowhere on a cold winter pitch black night, a decent distance from anywhere, I thought I had a good chance to be lost in the dark and cold and end up dead! The electric starter did nothing but the kickstart got it going for a few seconds until it dwindled out again, so I think it was the battery or alternator causing there to be no spark in the plugs. I managed to get some movement by constantly kicking the kickstart and generating a small charge to get me going for a few seconds at a time. I opened most of my protective winter clothes due to the heat generating work, so I was a knackered kid wearing a posh dining type suit, constantly kick starting a CG home with a dull intermitting front light in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, and in the icey cold. Its the bad times which you remember most fondly and my faithful CG got me home.

    My first bike and I'd have another if I were to get on two wheels again. It may be 'porridge' but that's it's charm - I see it as an 'anti-fashion' motorcycle.
    The one I acquired as a learner in 85 was unrestricted so there were a few occasions when sleek low profile boy racers would take off from traffic lights expecting to leave me in the dust, only to have me overtake them on my 'sit up and beg' CG on the straight.
    I seem to remember it could approach 70mph which was faster than I dared or needed on L plates back in the day. Manufacturer specs also claimed it was capable of 103 mpg and it certainly did seem to run on air.
    Decades on, it's good to see it still getting some love.

    Nice review. Had one (a chinese clone actually) 2007 to 2015 and it was just the easiest bike to ride and maintain - and actually a lot of fun due to its light weight and upright sitting position. But since I rode it all year it rusted pretty severely - mainly due to the salty roads here in Denmark during the wintertime. And some electric components and wiring did fail - including the electric starter. But the engine itself seemed pretty bulletproof (changed the oil every 1,500 km or 1,000 miles) - it was never opened except for valve adjustments. The only bad thing was that the drum brakes performed rather inadequate - you had to maintain a certain distance to vehicles in front of you on the roads.

    It's not because it was made for 3rd world countries, only! They like that bike because of the cheap revision, reliability, as you mentioned, and it is good. I also piloted an modern cv, wich is 160cc nowadays. In 2016, Honda is producing this bikes with more force. 125cc bikes are still avaible, but fuel Injected only, wich is awesome. My country is not too poor to bee a 3rd world country, but there is a lot of riders that have the most recent version of this bike. Because it works, it's cheap, and do what you need to. Want to run? Buy an sport bike. These bikes are not intended to run, anyway. But today, compared to the 1985 ones, they actually runs pretty fast, specially the 160cc cg's.

We reckon that the amount of fun you can have with a small bike is often completely overlooked! We're definitely not into the sensational approach - can't see the point :-). The next film will feature a 1930s Sunbeam and will probably be available by the end of June 2017. We'll also do a modern sports bike over the summer, together with one or two other small or old bikes.

    I had a CG125 that I'd purchased in 1977 new with £319 cash. Later fitted crash bars, rear carrier & top-box. It was a great little bike & way better than my previous Yamaha YB100. It got me from Dovercourt, through, Holland, Belgium, to Marseille in the south of France & return, without any hiccups at all. Two-up with a tent lashed upon the front mudguard, tank bag, BIG panniers & top-box obviously full; averaged 103 mpg as well. Used it most days for work & finally sold it around 1985-87-ish. Very sad to let it go. Somehow you get very attached to an old faithful.
    One thing I would disagree with though; the headlight really needed to brighter. I vaguely seem to remember it being 30 or 35 watts, using the old type incandescent bulbs. It really needed 45 - 50 watts imho. I suppose now it's simple to buy a modern replacement LED only drawing 20-watts of power, but maybe twice as bright.

    Very true that the Cg125 was built for low maintenance costs and reliability. Offers the performance of a 1.2 car with excellent fuel consumption mileage when driven gently.
    A simple 4 stroke meant that it had light breaking qualities ie its only weak point was its breaking distance especially in an emergency!

      Haha aw man called out :L I started out on a 125 for 3 years and am on a 1999 CB500s now. Loving it but I do miss the old 125 for simplicity, reliability and cost. Considering a cheap wee 125 for city use and the CG looks like the type of thing to suit me.

    Are these bikes worth getting as a first 125? I Really like the look of the '04 model. and just wondering if they are reliable and worth the money?

    • @sgch101
      @sgch101  8 лет назад

      Do you mean one as old as this? It's over 25 years old. If so, the difficulty is finding one that's been well looked after. If you can find a good one, then yes, it's worth considering

    • @sgch101
      @sgch101  8 лет назад

      Oops, I just saw you meant the 2004 model. Again, the same comments apply. So many of these are used and abused by learners or people who have no interest in looking after them with a bit of basic maintenance. If you can find one in reasonable condition, it would probably make a good bike. The spares are mostly easy to obtain, I think.

    Fun fact: In the philippines, we call it Honda TMX (tricycle model extreme) 125
    The manual stated "Do not attach a side car it will ruin the handling"
    while Honda Philippines was like "yea fam this is the perfect bike to attach a side car to" 😭😂

    When this bike came to Iran 50 years ago under the Shah, Britain was the actual third world country based on the standards of living, democracy, and spread of wealth between the Kingdom of Iran and Britain. I very well remember (It is on the record on youtube), Britain was asking Iran to lower the price of oil. Not to mention Iran had saved most of British industries from bankruptcy. Until Britain and US staged regime change and installed islamic regime in Iran so they could plunder Iran's wealth to thus day. Nice review on this little 125cc Honda.

    wow thank you,I do cycling but I love classic motocycles too.Can't decide which one gonna be my first motocycle,might be a brand new chinese copy of CG125 or a 125cc scooter with great carrying capability,due to that old fashioned engine CG125 has some vibration problems at higher speed right?That make it not quite comfortable for long distance traveling right?I need to travel 600 km to see my lung cancer aunt one last time with my adopted friends a dog & two cats & one turtle & one bag of worms,I wish she can live longer until I get myself a car but the reality is so damn cruel,I have to make a decision soon......

    • @sgch101
      @sgch101  8 лет назад

      +Fletcher Riverwood I'd go for the bike rather than the scooter - more flexible. You can add some "throw-over panniers", which will carry some items for you. You can also use bungee straps to carry a big bag behind you on the seat. A bike is probably more suited to the long journey than the scooter. If you get a chinese copy, make sure the supply of spare parts is reliable. (It almost certainly will be but is worth checking.) You'll have plenty of fun with a bike or a scooter! Also make sure you budget for some warm clothes and, very importantly, some good waterproof over-clothes. It can be miserable on two-wheels if you get cold and wet... Good luck! :-)

    Hondas are generally good, as everyone knows, but my first bike was a C90; automatic with two gears. It was good training for falling off but had one bad habit: when it rained the engine would stop.

    • @Khabirov88
      @Khabirov88 2 года назад +1

      I got a c90 and a cg125 the c90 has 3 gears tho. And it rides in rain and flooded roads better than any bike i ever rode. Yours could be faulty for stopping in the rain.

    It is very famous in Pakistan even many good bikes of other brands like Suzuki Hayabusa,Yamaha ybr, Rx1 etc are not so much used by general public.In Pakistan people love honda cg 125 because its easy maintenence free and spare parts are so common cheap u can buy its head light in 3 US dollars.Since 70s this bike is avilable and manufacutured in local Pak auto industries due to public demand.its rough bike despite having not kill switch,dipper,gear indicator,self start comfort level etc
