    The main difference I have found between 4H and 4 auto is in what happens when decelerating. In 4H, the drive train is locked together allowing compression braking front and rear. 4 auto, only keeps the front engaged when tire spin is detected, meaning in a deceleration condition it shifts out of four wheel drive leaving only the back tires to take the full load of the engine compression braking. This will often result it the rear end sliding out and loss of vehicle control. My rule is to use 4 auto only in mixed road surface conditions and 4H on roads that are completely snow packed.

      William Ward A breath of fresh air... Someone who understands the different purposes for the different modes. Auto for patchy/mixed conditions where you can't leave the t-case locked lest it bind up. 4Hi for consistently low-traction surfaces.

    • @stevenvanheel3932
      @stevenvanheel3932 7 лет назад +3

      William Ward the vehicle should only ever engine brake when you tell it to by manually downshifting. This is why vehicles coast when you let off the gas and the tac drops down to say 600 rpm until you step on the gas again.

    • @ducfandan1117
      @ducfandan1117 7 лет назад +5

      Steven Vanheel In an auto with a lockup torque converter, it won't drop to idle when cruising with the TC locked. Coasting is also not universal to all autos. Those designed for towing or performance tend to have more engine braking built in. Silverado diesel with the Allison is an example of a towing-focused transmission with very little free coasting and a heavy engine-braking bias.

    • @SlowRaker
      @SlowRaker 7 лет назад +1

      Man, I never thought of that. Makes perfect sense. I was considering trading in my 4wd Tacoma for a truck with auto 4wd for mixed conditions, now I'm thinking it may be best to stick with the 4HI in the Tacoma.

    • @rangerover06sc
      @rangerover06sc 6 лет назад +1

      William Ward It probably has more to do with the front and rear axles being locked together, which prevents too much or too little rotation in a variety of conditions, which greatly improves stability.

    All season tires are garbage especially in winter conditions. Take it from a Canadian, that also builds tires for a tire manufacturer. Don't risk it, get winter tires.

      yellowbe2003 on top of that, continental tires suck ass big time. Had those on my expedition and they were total junk!

      Mr223wssm oh really, i believe it. They were probably alright in the summer on pavement though? But other than that.....👎😠

    • @FCFordLord
      @FCFordLord 7 лет назад +2

      yellowbe2003 Depends on if studs are legal where you live. Most of the US, studs are illegal. The only benefit of true winter tires are that they accept studs or come with them.
      Otherwise; they are terrible at high speeds, terrible on pavement, rot faster.
      Proper all seasons often outperform studless snow tires. In areas where studs are illegal, you are better off with a quality all season rather than comprimising and getting snow tires.

      Stop spewing BS, idiot. Regular Winter tires are all nearly anyone needs for winter/snow/ice driving.
      Studs are not needed. And Winter tires _are_ better than all-season tires in winter driving conditions. It's the soft rubber and sipes, moron. Get educated.

    Biggest issue I experienced with the auto setting on my 2011 Silverado was it felt like if you coasted around a corner in auto mode, the 4WD would disengage which would lead to it basically acting like a 2WD truck and plowing through the corner. In 4 high it definitely behaved better in that situation.

      @donleamon8653 7 лет назад

      Ok, but I hope that for that price, GM has upped their quality/durability quadrant a bit, cause our last Denali XL (with a 6.0) was a turd and the Dmax I just traded in yesterday on a '16 Power Wagon ($46k, which is a lot more truck, at least mechanically) was also imploding. Ram will probably be the same way ;-)~

    If there is a pavement, you use 4 auto to keep it from binding, if there is a slick surface you use 4hi. It just locks the transfer case

    • @scottwilkins
      @scottwilkins 7 лет назад +4

      I kind of wish they'd do what they do in the Duramax Colorado, in making the locking transfer case via a separate button on the dash. Unless you are 100% in snow, mud or sand 4 HI is kind of worthless and will damage the vehicle if used on solid pavement. 4 Auto is quite good anyway.

    I believe the intent of the 4-auto mode is for patchy icy roads. Normally, it's driving in 2wd, but shifts to 4wd when it detects slippage. Personally, I like to select either 2wd or 4wd myself instead of having a computer pop it in and out whenever it feels like it.

    I'm 55 and I'm on my 16th car. I've had Buicks Oldsmobiles and Chevys, Fords, Dodges and a Plymouth, a few Hondas, a couple of Volvos, and a Benz. There was a twenty year period where I wouldn't have considered another GM product but in the past year I've had the opportunity to drive four new GMs, a Buick LaCrosse, a Caddy CTS, a Chevy Silverado and a GMC Canyon. I'm extremely impressed with GM's current crop of cars. All performed incredibly and each one was precise and extremely solid. Solid counts allot for me. I'm glad to see that GM is back not just in sales but in quality. They're a legitimate player again.

    Hi guys, greetings from Costa Rica, Central America. Excellent video. I have a 1998 Yukon with Autotrac and it helps very much in wet asphalt and/or tight turns. To be honest, it's not like a permanent four wheel drive system because it's a reaction system, but works well. The problem with the permanent four wheel drive is that you can't lock the center differential in 4 high, you must have it in 4low, the only exception that I know is the Lada Niva that has 4high, 4high lock, 4low, 4low lock, it's perfect.

    Cool video! I love the Conti Cross Contact as an SUV/light offroad tire but here in Austria it does NOT qualify as a snow tire and I would NEVER use it in real Winter conditions. I have Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires mounted from Nov-April (the mandatory months for snow tires here). The Conti is rated "M+S" but does not have the snowflake symbol. Real winter tires have these tiny teeth grooves.

    Recently rented one of these while in Jackson Hole after a snow storm. The roads were 70% covered in ice and packed snow. I started driving it in 4 auto but soon changed to 4H because it always felt like the auto was a second late on switching power to the front. I could feel the front end binding on a few turns which didnt bother me since it was a rental but even if this was my own vehicle I would have been fine with the occasional bind over the butt puckering feeling of a 3 ton vehicle full of people I love getting sideways on unfamiliar roads. The truck itself is unbelievably nice though. So much room. So many gadgets and tech. So comfortable and quiet yet powerful and really handsome at all angles. We drove down a road that had about 6-8" of fresh snow on it and in 4H the truck never skipped a beat. If I had 70k burning a hole in my pocket and needed to move a family of 5 or 6 and all our gear this would definitely be the truck for me.

    I have a 2011 Ram 1500 Big Horn and prefer the auto 4WD because I can get up inclines when stopped at a stop sign. In 4 high both tires tend to slip and I get nowhere. I don't have the standard axles, not the limited slip or posi. Interesting subject as I think a lot of people are battling more snow this year than the previous three or four years. I would love to see you do this again in a pickup, especially a new Ram.

    I was blown away by the gas mileage. I bought my new 2017 LT home with 78 miles on the odometer. Then my wife and I went on a shakedown cruise up and down a steep mountain grade, some city driving, and some highway cruising. 150 mile trip total. Door to door fuel mileage was 21.0, and that is on an engine with almost no break-in miles. And we're talking about a 3-ton vehicle. Amazing!

Suburban is cool but only problem is you can't get the new ones with a diesel and a stripped down version with out the power windows, power door locks, cruise and A/C and you can't get Barn doors in the rear. I remember when you could get a plain jane Suburban with out all the power features and when a rear seat was an option.

Would be cool to see how they perform on say a figure of eight course and some braking and accelleration tests on snow :)

    Those tires look lethal for that kind of weather :S Getting going is one thing, but stopping again is another matter! Would have thought that people living in areas that get regular snow had a set of proper snow tires for winter use?

    • @donleamon8653
      @donleamon8653 7 лет назад +2

      Most manufactures put tires on that are just good enough to get you off the lot when you buy the vehicle. Those Conti's are actually a step up.

    • @texnorthman
      @texnorthman 7 лет назад +2

      Same here in Norway, but we only run the OEM tires for summer use, and buy a second set of rims and tires for winter use :) The difference between all season tires, or even mud+snow rated off road tires, and proper winter tires is much larger than most people think.
      Edit: I run Nokian Hakka 8 studded tires on my truck, and Hakka 7's on my girlfriends Miata. Studded tires are another huge leap above even proper friction tires, but of course they aren't legal everywhere. Had Nokian Hakka R SUV's on my previous truck, those were pretty good but for a heavy vehicle there really is no substitute for studded tires :)

      I'm guessing some of the difference depends on how often you have to drive on snow. Where I live we have ice and snow on the roads for 3 to 4 months of the year. We therefore drive the same distances (and speeds for the most part) in all conditions - so it's not about getting stuck, but about being able to safely do 50mph on snow covered back roads every day of the year :)
      If you only get snow once or twice a year you can just drive slowly (or not at all) that day and you will be fine ;) After the first snow fall this year I tested my truck on the tires I use during summer, M+S rated General Grabber AT2's. They are snow flake rated, but they were completely useless on anything but fresh deep snow. Ice was down right dangerous. I didn't get stuck, but I couldn't do more than 20 mph without needing a loooooooong time to stop again, not to mention the poor handling in corners.

      The key to using one set of tires is looking at snow flake rated tires ONLY. And even those are dangerous sometimes.
      I currently run BFG Urban Terrain T/A, which is a new snow flake rated light-AT tire and they are absolutely fantastic. I have direct comparison with winter tires and these BFGs are only marginally worse, if at all.
      The all-weather industry has progressed a lot, there is no denial. Take a look at tire test from Germany, for example (AutoBild magazine). Some of the all-weathr tires are unbelievably good.

    4 wheel lock (high) isn't as safe as all-wheel-drive (not locked) for driving except for when you are in deep snow at low speeds, are stuck, or off-road. Locking the axles together is less stable but offers more grip when you really need it.

    I got well and truly stuck in snow on Utah Rt-12 in a Mercury Mountaineer rental with AWD and no 4x4 option. It was admittedly older and the computer power transfer was far less sophisticated. I'm with Andre. I'd use 4x4 high.

      Jackal's Outdoor Channel, actually we get more snow days than you would think. Due to the fact that no one down here preps their vehicles for the cold months, if any sleet or snow hits the ground they cancel school. Happens every few years.

    you can get the suburban with a 6.0 vortech in l or m vin code, but you have to buy through fleet services at the dealer. the government does buy these with duramax option. you can also buy the 3500 van with a duramax, but no alison, ive seen them at the gov fleet resale dealer in sacramento cal. the suburban is more of a hybrid 2500-3500.

    I'm confused,you can get a 40k Silverado with the 5.3 and an 8 speed transmission but you only get a 6 speed in a 70k Suburban? That doesn't really add up for me.

    This is just speculation, but I'm guessing the transition was so seamless in 4wd auto because the computer likely was already in 4wd from the start. A lot of systems will engage the 4wd at launch regardless of slippage.

    I prefer to have snow tires on 4x4 or AWD vehicles on snow or icy roads. Mine have snow tires on and have no problem getting up the hill or icy roads or even bring it to stop in the short distance compare to all season tires. Getting to stop the vehicle is the main key on snow or icy roads vs how fast it goes from stop on snow or icy roads.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 7 лет назад +18

      Because people are stupid enough to keep paying the higher prices so automakers keep throwing higher prices on vehicles year after year. If people plain stopped buying they'd stop with the ridiculous price gouging.
