I am still SO obsessed with this research four years later! Thank you for doing what you have done for us. I have been a nurse for 8 years and from the patient perspective, you have done what physicians are truly set out to do.
Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about all of these things. I had a 50 unit botox injection about a year ago and unfortunately it did not make a difference at all. I don't know if it wasn't administered properly or if it is a neurological disorder for me as you talked about. I am unable to burp, have gurgling noises, can't drink carbonated drinks, and have acid refux symptoms. We came to the conclusion that it was RCPD so hearing that the success rate is so high makes me think that it was not properly administered. My surgeon never heard of RCPD until I explained it to him. I also was not told to practice burping after the procedure. What would you suggest my next step should be? If I was closer to Illinois, I would set up an appointment but I live in Florida. Thanks again.
Sorry to hear this. The two variables are dose and targeting (placement). If you never got any burps, there was a problem with one or the other or both, and you should definitely try again. Maybe try another physician who has done some? I suspect someone in Florida has picked this up...Or Atlanta? And keep in mind that we've seen many at Bastian Voice Institute from Florida, and this can be done from start to finish with little more than 24h from flying in to flying home.
I'm 67 and I'm glad there is finally a diagnosis for this!!! I was wondering if whatever caused R-CPD (my guess is my mom took DES-stilbestrol) can also cause IBS-C?
I don't think DES was the cause. IBS-C is a common dx that is later understood to have been R-CPD. Usually if you match the R-CPD syndrome, all problems fall away post treatment, and that may even include constipation.
Breathing in particular...What I call "mechanical shortness of breath." It is as though not enough room to fill because you are already so full of air in abdomen/esophagus that it takes up chest space.
Since acid reflux is so common in R-CPD, you would think there might be an increased incidence. I can’t answer the question definitively. The only possibly helpful comment is that I have done an informal screening esophagoscope on many hundreds (approaching a thousand) and have not seen obvious abnormalities.
Thank you so much Dr. Bastian for your effort to inform us and take our fear. Didnt get the procedure yet but i will ! Is there any doctor youre 'teaching' in Austria or in Turkey ? WIth best regards
There are several doctors in Europe that have either trained with him or have communicated with him about R-CPD. You can find a list of them on Bastian Voice Institute: www.bastianvoice.com/about/links/
So welcome. Best plan is to call larger ENT groups to ask: Any doctors in your group who help people burp? Keep calling until you find someone who does…
Many people bring Dr. Bastian's published articles on R-CPD to their primary doctor or ENT as validity behind the diagnosis. A Google search on “inability to burp” or “I cant burp” used to only bring up Laryngopedia articles. But more recently, articles by other doctors also show up in the results as more and more doctors begin to practice the procedure and share their results online. For one who suffers from R-CPD (especially for those in countries outside the US where English is not the primary language) sharing your story through social media, reddit, FB groups, WhatsApp communities, etc. helps raise awareness through your network of friends and fellow no-burpers, ESPECIALLY if English is not the primary language. (Our R-CPD resource page is currently translated in 3 additional languages) The more people know about R-CPD, the more common the diagnosis will be outside of “self-diagnosis via RUclips” A doctor is more likely to listen when the patient says “I heard about the inability to burp from one of my family/friends” rather than, “ I watched a RUclips video of a doctor who says I have R-CPD”. Bringing Dr. Bastian's published papers to your doctor can also solidify the professional diagnosis.
@@Laryngopedia i actually have copy and pasted my own information about it, symptoms and about Dr bastian, i leave the comment on random videos everywhere online and was able to reach many 🙂
One would expect relief of abdominal bloating, nausea, gurgling almost as soon as burping commences-usually about 2 days after botox injection. Constipation appears to take a little longer. And very significant improvement in about 50%.
i think i have this condition, i'm 22 my mom says i burped as a baby but i haven't for as long as i can remember. i dont experience "daily suffering" as most that have this condition seem to, i only get really bad discomfort if i have multiple carbonated drinks or especially if i get a sore throat and do alot of dry swallowing, also puking is very difficult(feels like im choking with every heave) do you think i should still be treated for RCPD?
If I can still burp sometimes, but am up most the night trying to burp, banging on my chest, sometimes it comes up, I have to get out of bed and stand. I get nauseous when I can’t get burp out. All through the day I have to stand to eat and drink in order to be able to burp, and then have to bang on chest in order to get burp out. Would this be considered R-CPD? Or something different?
As for most disorders, there is a spectrum…If inability to burp to need, and especially if bloating, chest pressure, flatulence, nausea after eating, etc., such a person could indeed have R-CPD. A full discussion with an expert could help.
Thank you so much for your help. I was up all night trying to burp. 😭😭. Then when I got up this morning, huge burps finally came out. And I feel so much better. All through the day I can burp as long as I bang on my chest. I’m thankful it’s not as bad as others who can’t burp at all, but I’m exhausted when I have to work everyday.

Also check for food allergies as it could cause gas/bloat.
Voice and breathing play a big role in my R-CPD. I am sorry you decided to leave this out.
Breathing in particular...What I call "mechanical shortness of breath." It is as though not enough room to fill because you are already so full of air in abdomen/esophagus that it takes up chest space.
Would you be able to talk about R-CPD and Barrett’s Esophagus? Is there a relation?

Speak on emetophobia and if patients see relief after burping.
Thank you for your suggestion. The question of emetophobia and R-CPD was adressed in Part 1 of the Q&A here: ruclips.net/video/T2B4VMagUJg/видео.html
Hi, how long before abdominal pain and constipation goes away after treatment and what should i do if it doesn’t go away ?

It is really your call. That said, there are quite a few who do get worse over time. So it really depends on your level of motivation.

Where would I go in Oklahoma City area for a work up?
@@tonyaschuster8478 You would call larger local ENT groups in the area and ask if there is a laryngologist.

Can not burping cause your face to swell? All that air has to go somewhere, can it go under the skin and make you look puffy?
