    Arguably the greatest Hawks center of all time (RIP). Undersized, but rarely overwhelmed. In his prime (before the knee injuries), Beaty got up and down the floor with the best of 'em and knew how to finish with authority. Also had a reliable outside jumper that kept larger centers honest at the very least. Biggest career achievement was willing an overachieving Utah Stars team to an unexpected ABA title during the 1970-71 season (Bill Sharman's first pro-basketball championship as head coach). Relieved to see Beaty finally making the Hall Of Fame several years back, now it's time for the Hawks to do their part and officially retire his number for good.

      I enjoyed watching Big Z play because he had an excellent all-around game and worked so hard. He had a nice jump shot - he could face up, hit that jumper off the dribble, and hit that turnaround jumper on the low block. Big Z took those big fellas outside and lit em up.

    The ABA's Wes Unseld. I only remember him playing in old timers games, and you could tell his knees were killing him. Known to be a tough guy who no one messed with. Had a nice outside set shot that was rare for centers in those days.

    Another great video. Keep up the great work! You're channel is one of a kind! By the way, Shaquille O'Neal shouldn't be on television talking about basketball. Not only is his knowledge of the game lacking, but he shows little respect for the game's history.

      He'll give love to Russell occasionally, but I feel like that's because you don't hear as many people saying that Russell is better than Shaq, but you do hear people say that Wilt, Kareem or Hakeem were better than Shaq, so he won't give them much love (except Hakeem, because he played against him)... The TNT group put together All-Decade teams, and their 1960 team was:
      C - Bill Russell
      F - Bob Pettit
      F - Elgin Baylor
      G - Jerry West
      G - Oscar Robertson
      Shaq was uncompromisingly saying Russell over Wilt (I take Wilt over any center all day). Either way, in my opinion, you shouldn't leave Russell or Wilt off that team. Here's my take:
      C - Wilt Chamberlain
      F - Bill Russell
      F - Elgin Baylor
      G - Jerry West
      G - Oscar Robertson
      Do what Red Auerbach did in the early-60s All-Star games and play both of them in the frontcourt. And I'll tell you what, I'd put that 1960s team up against any other decade, including the 90s team, which would probably look like:
      C - Hakeem Olajuwon
      F - Karl Malone
      F - Scottie Pippen
      G - Michael Jordan
      G - John Stockton

      I agree. Any center that challenges his legacy. That's why I give credit to Sir Charles, because he calls him out on it.

    • @T.Ramby11
      @T.Ramby11 7 лет назад +2

      Good points all around. Imagine how many more All-Defensive Teams Wilt would have made if they had them throughout his career too. I will say I think Wilt was a much better defensive player than Kareem. And it's absolutely crazy that a center as big and strong as Wilt never fouled out.

    • @T.Ramby11
      @T.Ramby11 7 лет назад +3

      Absolutely. And Wilt had serious competition in terms of defensive centers, with Russell and Nate Thurmond. Surely, if the Defensive Player of the Year award had been around, it would have been between those three giants, maybe throw in a little Jerry West, and later on, Walt Frazier... If you ever watch the 1983 NBA Finals, you'll see that Kareem was flat-out incapable of defending Moses Malone, so Riley often put guys like Kurt Rambis and Mark Landsberger on Moses throughout that series.

      Oh yeah, Reggie Harding was a 7-footer who nearly averaged a double-double in four NBA seasons. He went on to the ABA and averaged 13 points and 13 boards for the Pacers in one season. Definitely sounds like a could-have-been had it not been for his off-the-court issues. Another forgotten center from that era is Walter Dukes, two-time All-Star, who averaged 10.5 points and 11.3 rebounds in 10 NBA seasons. Then you got a guy later in Wilt's career named Elmore Smith, 7-footer, who averaged 13.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 8 NBA seasons. So many forgotten big men that Wilt faced. When people say Wilt faced 6-6 white centers, I say name me one, and of course they can't.

      Funny story from Wilt's (first) autobiography: in an early career game against Zelmo, Wilt found that Big Z was tugging on his shorts to harass his moves. Wilt gave a hip push in response--and Zelmo went across the court like he had been shot out of a cannon. Mendy Rudolph, as a ref, went over and said to him, "Wilt is mad--and he thinks you're dead. Don't move, and he won't come over to look."

    Clearly t he guys from that era were more fundamentally sound than modern players. The game has changed so much to an athletic style The players of the modern era are not comparable in skills or smarts.

      I will never forget what Shaq did in the final seconds of Game 4 of the 1995 NBA Finals as the Magic were about to lose the championship. Rewatch the tape, he gives Hakeem a bullshit hard shove under the basket as the clock ran out simply because Olajuwon hit a 3 pointer on him at the other end the play before.

    • @ripperduck
      @ripperduck 6 лет назад +4

      wilt hated shaq, called him a fat, lazy pig. shaq did nothing to stay in game shape in the offseason, would take off for stretches of time in season with 'injuries,' said that all that mattered were the playofs. wilt was a far greater athlete than shaq, played nearly every single minute of the regular season, prided himself on maintaining game conditioning all year round. in wilt's mind, what shaq did was terribly disrespectful towards the game and teammates, and wilt didn't mince words in his criticism of lazy, self-entitled players. and yeah, wilt could easily have crushed shaq, if shaq didn't first fall over from a coronary trying to keep up with the big dipper....

    • @elwin38
      @elwin38 6 лет назад +1

      I agree. But i will say this. The Orlando Shaq will have been a battle/war against Chamberlain. From the Lakers on, Chamberlain would've ran circles around Shaq, and that was a product of conditioning.
