Well, let's say _40_ - 30 is too late: born '92 or '93 or '94, there's no way you grew up with our greatest comedian... Even 40 is doubtful; at least when you say _every_ German.
@@geronomina6395 I am 27 and I know Loriot by heart. My parents have the whole collection, including his amazing movies. Every once in a while I watch a few of his sketches again here on YT, as they never get old. :)

Loriot's humorous legacy has made it into German customs. "There used to be more tinsel": this sentence has been part of German Christmas culture for many decades. It comes from Vicco von Bülow, aka Loriot, probably the most popular German humorist of all time. He would have been one hundred years old on November 12, 2023. 😊 Loriot taught us Germans to laugh at ourselves. With dignity. He had the ability to see through human weaknesses. In his brilliant sketches, however, he in no way condemned the people he "exposed". Loriot's humor is unique. It's always precise, incredibly funny, biting, but never malicious I deeply admire Loriot 😍 and his death has hit me hard.
The "There used to be more tinsel" is not just a generationial thing. We old farts use it all the time in December but even the younger generations have embraced it. I once was about to enter a train in Munich in front of me a young metal head, wearing the usual black, but his T-shirt had "Früher war mehr Lametta" in bold print on the back. That made my day.
I think one thing that is lost in translation is the fact, that they cranked up the stiffnes by still using the formal "Sie" while asking for her hand. Normaly you where already on a unformal "DU" base when you asked a gril to get married even in the 70th. Loriot is the master of mirroing the german stiffnes of that time...and a bit of today.. Deutsches Spießertum
To let it look 'simple' is so difficult and complex...wording, timing, mimik a.s.o. His sketch partner Evelyn Hamann was asked after his dead how the cooperation with Loriot over the years was and she answered how difficult it was due to his need of perfection. Some scenes they did hundrets of times till he was fine with it. So it was mostly hard to work with him, but the outcome was brilliant.
My generation truly misses him and alikes dearly. The kind of what today they dare to call humor just doesn't cut it for me. Loriot aka Vikow von Bülow was in a league of his own. He was a close observer of society's odds and was able to tranlate them into the most rdiculous sketches upholding a mirror on society. R.I.P. Loriot.
Fun fact. They tried to shoot the sketch with a real noodle. But it didn't work. The noodle didn't really want to stick, so they resorted to a piece of paper and glue.
Hi D, your reaction is so infectious, I love so much laughing with you about the sketches I've watched felt 100 times before. There is so much more with the perfect comedy couple Loriot an Evelyn Hamann. Hope you do more of them.
He was a member of the German nobility. A true aristocrat in the best sense. Bernhard-Viktor „Vicco“ Christoph-Carl von Bülow. His artistic name, “Loriot”, is the French name of the bird in his family’s coat of arms.
Another fact: Vicco von Bülow played and uncredited part in he Movie "The Longest Day" from 1962. He played an adjudant of Generalleutnant (lieutenant general) Max-Josef Pemsel, played by Wolfgang Preiss. During WWII, von Bülow actually served as a lieutenant in the german army at the eastern front in different roles, one of them as a staff officer on batallion level. Asked if he had been a good solder in an interview long after the war, he answered: "Not a good enough one, or I would have been part of the resistance on 20th July 1944." On that day, german officers tried to assassinate Hitler with a bomb and to topple the Nazi government during Operation Valkyrie.
Fun fact for you, @ReactionsbyD: Loriot worked as a director at the Opera in Stuttgart for a short period of time in the 80ies. The mother of my brother’s girlfriend was a singer there at that time and she absolutely loves him. Everybody who worked with him back then adores Loriot. He must have been wonderful to be around ❤ 😊
Vicco von Bülow (aka Loriot) wrote about himself and his alter ego (that man with the bulbous nose in a frock coat and pin striped trousers) that after years of studying arts and graphics he was finally able to draw a little man that has nourished him since.
You should also do Das Jodeldiplom and Die Fernsehansagerin. In the latter you will recognize the brilliance of Evelyn Hamann as an actress. In it she plays a television announcer who announces a very English soap opera. You can also get all of Loriot's texts as a small booklet if you want to do theater yourself. I've been practicing this announcement over and over again - for 30 years now - and still fail at the TH. It is impossible to deliver it correctly and to the point and do it with a straight face.
