I like how Oda ties the history of blood transfusions with the Sanji gag. He really weaved vital lore with comedy and I appreciate it. Without Sanji this whole topic would never be relevant to us
Something that I didn't know until I was informed, racial blood separation was very big on our world as well. Basically different race blood weren't allowed to be given to different races (for example white to black). This was ended in late 1970s or early 1980s but it's wild to imagine that this continued this long and how many people died because they didn't get the transfusion they needed. 😢
up until a few years ago, gay men weren't even allowed to donate blood as well. which is incredibly stupid bc they test for HIV and all other stuff when you go donate, but somehow, somewhere someone decided that no actually saving lives isnt worth it if the person that is being saved gets """gay blood""". or something. im glad oda made it a topic in one piece
Hahaha when you said Fisher Jones, that took me out for a second 😂 mixing Fisher Tiger and Hody Jones isn't something I've heard before so that surprised me. I do agree that blood tranfusion subplot being a thing because of Sanji's nosebleeds is kinda dumb. But I also think that making it a part of the plot and not just an anime gag is pretty funny and makes me chuckle. Especially since it does make sense with how many times Sanji has had a nosebleed since they met up that Chopper would be out his type of blood.
And sanji, you feel bad for cause he was chased lot predators constantly for 2 years. There's something missing from this arc that keeps the fishman race not the homerun it is.
I enjoyed fishman island... i think they needed a more playful arc after all the drama of the last couple arcs ...also i feel like another problem possibly is the fact that the crew is too strong but they kind of had to be..all in all i liked it and im glad your enjoying it too
The fishmen blood thing is specifically more relevant to american history where racism was a much bigger deal due to how much immigration America was getting (I mean we kinda had a whole civil war over slavery.) I admit I'm sort of ignorant on racial matters from other countries, but this type of thing was a huge deal here. I didn't know you were mixed race Jent! me too. My father was black and my mom's white, but I look like a darker-toned white person, or I've had people think I'm mexican lol, but I did have a little trouble with people being just a little bit racist to me from basically all sides growing up because of my origins. Of course nowhere near as much trouble as I woulda had if I were born, say, 10 or 20 years earlier.
I will say, the anime over used the Sanji gag. Not to say that is good in the manga, but when you read in bulk, I didn't find that bad. And I pretty much agree with the feeling that Skypiea and Fishman Island are similar, especially since one is located 10.000 meters above sea level, and the other 10.000 below lol.
Me personally when I was still watching the fishman arc I actually like it and still do to this day my favorite part about this arc is the backstory tho it is good it still the one of the lowest tier arc

Fishman Island is better than its reputation. Not top of the line action and fights, but themes and history are peak.
