    Thank you very much for the video. Wish I was able to order some garlic from your farm. I am in Canada and unfortunately can not order garlic from the US. For harvesting, I count the number of leaves on each variety and harvest once 50 to 60% of the leaves have turned brown. I have not been having issues with this method but to be safer and for longer storage, you can stick with 50%. Wishing everyone a healthy and wonderful garlic harvest. ❤ from 🇨🇦

    Your details and videos are the best I’ve seen as I research the steps for my varieties.
    I’m surprised your so low in subscription. More need to know about you.
    Also, why not more videos? Was all accomplished?

    Does it matter if you hang them bulbs up leaves down, or leaves up, bulbs down?

      Makes no difference. Most important thing is to have good airflow. In fact we no longer hang at all, we lay on long wire mesh racks.

    Hello and thank you for the information! I just harvested about 50 bulbs yesterday. I live close to your Pennsylvania farm. I'd planted 3 varieties and two of the three seemed ready to harvest. I have the book Growing Great Garlic and I thought I should harvest when 5 green leaves remain. From this video, maybe I should have waited a week or so. It's hardneck, but I'd like to store it in a loose braid. Would it cure well if I braid the stalks now while they're soft enough and hang it up in a good curing environment? Thanks

      It really depends on variety but it’s better to harvest too early than too late. Typically we are harvesting most purple stripes and Porcelains around the first week of July in PA. Imagine this year would have been a few days earlier so I don’t think you are too far off. As far as braiding goes, the trick to braiding hardnecks is to “pull” the scape instead of snapping. We don’t recommend doing that but if you did it removed the woody stem from the center and makes them much easier to braid. I wouldn’t be concerned if you are braiding 10-15 bulbs so long as you hang them somewhere with good air circulation.

      Glad to hear that I'm not too far off with my harvest. Thank you for your helpful response. I'm going to see if I can make that loose braid to hang them. I'll let you know how it goes 😊

      Ok Mr. Hardneck garlic, braiding was not a good idea. I worked on the stems to make them bendable and I did manage to get a braid finished. But it took loads of time to work them into being even somewhat bendable. Definitely NOT worth the effort!

    Can plants that have leaf miner larvae but good bulb formation still be cured?

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443  3 года назад +1

      Yes. In our experience we’ve never seen ALM in the bulb, it always seems to stop in the stem at the soil line. We believe this is due to ideal temps for ALM. Depending on severe the infestation will determine the impact to bulb size, up to and including lose of plant/bulb if the infestation is high enough to cause the plants to lodge (fall over) early in the season prior to scaping in hardnecks. When ALM first appeared in our area we would see one or two in a plant and there was no noticeable difference in yield. In year 3 or 4 it became very apparent.

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443  3 года назад +1

      It’s also important to understand the life cycle of ALM. There is a 2nd adult flight every year that occurs in late summer/fall so the larvae/pupae that are found from spring flight in your harvested crop that is curing will hatch long before it’s time to plant in the fall. This is also the reason there is little/no concern about transfer via seed stock.

    Selling garlic by mail this year? What is the average cost for seed hardnecks. Thanks!

      We grade and sell by 1/4” size increments. As size increases so does price.
