  • Shading techniques are a vital skill for the product and industrial designer. The addition of shading to a page full of sketched design ideas helps the designer to communicate his or her ideas and thoughts to their client. Here are some tips and advice on making the process as straightforward and fluid as possible, allowing the designer to focus upon being creative and problem solving.

    If you don’t want to keep stopping put it on 0.25x playback speed. i found it helpful because I didn’t have to press pause every 10 seconds

    I very much like the way you emphasise the main shadows by making the respective outline bold. Will try that. I only wonder, if this might be a special technique for stills or "mechanical stuff", and whether it will suit people or "living subjects" as well. Thank you very much for sharing your speed painting. Learned a lot just watching you. 🤩

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  4 года назад +1

      Thank you madiko! This style transfers well to living subjects too. The only thing to add is that this technique is assuming there’s a bright light near by, rather than ambient or soft lighting. The bright light casts shadows that are high contrast and sharp edged. This will work on people and living subjects but looks quite dramatic. We’re more used to seeing shadows cast by ambient lighting. These give a softer and more gradual shadow. I hope this helps.

    Amazing! Do you use any reference to know where the shade in the bottle and hands go?

    • @productdesignermaker
      @productdesignermaker  4 года назад +2

      Adriana Reinoso thank you. There’s some information on that in my previous video, but it’s all of the areas that would be a little further hidden from the light source. I’m imagining a light source somewhere to the right hand side, and above the paper. Surfaces towards the left hand side, and ‘underneath’ are the ones where the light doesn’t reach so well.

    What pen are you using, the gray one. I'm looking for a pen similar to the sharpie pens that are kind of streaky and light when moving quick, but can take marker with out feathering.

      @@productdesignermaker I just ordered some! Thanks. I find with my chartpak markers, even ball points end up smudging, and gel rollers just have too consistent of a line to really get that "look" before I lay down my main lines. I love how sharpies work, but xylene on xylene you know.
      Thanks for the response! Much appreciated!
