At about 8:30 into this video you pay 2 + 2 to enter a hex and then overrun. But the stack has to pay 1/2 MP to move one hex on the road plus 2 MPs for entering an EZOC. Then the stack pays 2 Mps to overrun, so the total is 4.5 MPs spent.
You guys would probably really like Karelia 44 as well, based on how much you enjoyed this. Another SCS one mapper with a really captivating strategic situation. I did a video on it on my channel if you want to see what it’s all about. Mighty Endeavor is also great with the simultaneous turns if you play both the east and west maps.
Great video Alex. I like your enthusiasm (it makes me want to get some off the shelf!) I think the series is older then 1998 though. I have Stalingrad Pocket and Yom Kippur since the early 90s, so I think the original SCS ruleset actually is almost 30 years old.
Great review as usual. I've already got the rules downloaded. I made some moves in vassal module and decided to get it. Just a question. Are you thinking about make a play through of BCS serie? Very interested in but i know isn't that easy. Thanks. A great Ciao from Italy. Marco
For the future, look at the prepub of the SCS North Africa game. It Never Snows is big but Day of Days is really big. Day of Days has some one map scenarios that I recommend.
Just ordered this a couple days ago. My potentially future son in law is a Sgt in the USMC. He has a 3 day pass this weekend for Memorial Day and wants to play his first hex and counter war game. When I asked what time period and Theatre he was interested in, as he gandered at my small eclectic collection and he stated that the east front WWll fascinates him. Disappointed he didn’t say Pacific 😜. I glanced at my rather anemic east front collection which consisted of only Stalingrad 42🙄. Rostov will be my first MMP game and I am happy to hear the system is easy to grasp but hard to master. Thanks for the outstanding review.
You will not be disappointed (more than not choosing Pacific) the game is really not complex te learn, especially if you have any amount of wargame experience. I was surprised at how quickly we were into the thick of the game.
@@ThePlayersAid my only fear is I will have to get several more MMP titles that I have been eyeing for some time. Into the rabbit hole with full bravado!!!! 🤪
Could SCS be a good next step after combat commander? I’m still playing plenty of combat commander but I’m interested in trying some different systems and types of games.
Another question: where did you get the dice? I think in the unboxing you showed it was a red and white die that came with the game. Looks like a cool upgrade!
It would play fine solo. Nothing that would stop it from being good, but also nothing that particularly supports it. Just play both sides and make smart decisions/roll a die about when to commit aircraft etc.
@@ThePlayersAid Thanks a mill1,000,000n for a prompt and honest reply. Keep up the very interesting show you are running. I like the new style of play through / tutorials you are putting on the show. Looking forward to what’s coming.
Love your guys' content! Newbie question. What do you have your map in? Seems like a great way of keeping folded maps like this flat and safe from spills.
Great review great channel guys. For someone starting out in hex n counter games. Would you recommend this first over holland 44?? I have both but unsure which one our group should start with. Thanks
Rostov '41 might be a bit simpler, rules wise. But they're both excellent and robust systems. I would probably pick based on theme. If everyone loves A Bridge Too Far, then you get to play that out and it's excellent.
My normal modern(not modern: Avalon Hill, SPI) go to war game companies: Compass, GMT, White Dog and Legion. Got two MMP, but not WW2. This looks good. And very very tempting. Research time. Thanks guys for great video. And thank you for convincing me to get Colonial Twilight. It kick my backside all over the place but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Well you are definitely missing out with MMP. They are better than both Legion and White Dog. Even Decisions beats those two. This game is really a 'The Gamers' game, just printed by MMP (as opposed to produced by The Gamers). MMP's games have a distinct flavor, as does The Gamers. Typical MMP is ASL, Angola, The Storm Over series, and that international series (which is very good). The Gamers does OCS, BCS, ect which all have a distinctive art style. I don't really care for The Gamers' games, but DAK is excellent. I don't really like the OCS supply rules, which is their centerpiece.
@@horrido666 I'm not a happy camper with Decision Games. They just feel incomplete. Like you have to fix it in order to finish playing it. I erred above. 1 of my MMP is Panzer Grenadier (printed 4th ed. Rules). Pretty counters, otherwise...meh.
currently $44.00 at MMP and $39 from one seller @ Amazon.... Cut my teeth on The Russian Campaign in last half of 70's - someday maybe you will pay, review and compare ..... I have Heights of Courage - will need to get ready to play ....
Having played several of his designs, I've concluded Dean Essig is a genius game designer. Most for what he doesn't write a rule for but is none the less in the game due to interactions of other rules, turn sequence, CRT etc. Also these popular series titles have gone through numerous versions and are highly honed through years of play.
I do think that time has helped this series become what it is today, and I agree, Dean's designs (those few I have read/played) are excellent in that way
Happy to know that WW2 East Front games are low priority. Hope that you keep it that way as there are too many games on other subjects which deserve your attention. Stay well.

Bought the game thanks to you guys! Youre really the best.
I played The Gamers SCS Series twenty years ago - bought them all - and they were great! Great video guys...
My friend and I we know the system and we jumped right into the campaign of day of days and it was awesome
Great review :)
Greetings from Poland :)
Excellent review! I bought Heights of Courage last week (not played) and after your optimistic review I decided to buy Rostov '41 :) Thanks guys!
Some of the specialities of this system reminds me of Panzergruppe Guderian and it‘s Derivates. Thanks for the review!
I have this game. Thanks guys!
thank you
Thanks guys, another interesting video.
Great intro series.

Be cool if you did a breakdown of the rules. would be interesting to see how simple they are. Just an idea for a vid!

Yes. Very different scale, and as such feels different but if anything these rules are less complex than CC.
OK boys, you've done it now - your first steps on the road to OCS! Let's have no more delay!
Agreed. But OCS is a bit of a different beast. Fun, just different.
Based on their videos, I think Alex & Grant would just prefer more SCS, but I'd recommend they try TCS or maybe the VCS? (Salerno).

The dice I use are from Battlefront, made for Flames of War. They're so great.
@@ThePlayersAid Thanks again!
Thanks for another thorough and interesting game review! In you view, Rostov’41 and/or the system in general, how do you reckon it plays solo?
It would play fine solo. Nothing that would stop it from being good, but also nothing that particularly supports it. Just play both sides and make smart decisions/roll a die about when to commit aircraft etc.

It's a top loading poster protector from Ultra Pro. Just like baseball card top loaders, but massive!
@@ThePlayersAid Wow, neat! Thanks for the reply! When I get any war games with non-mounted maps, I'll be sure to look for these!
Just started playing SCS Heights of Courage....so easy to just get into the rules.
I got it in the sale just barely, will play I'm 2022 hopefully. SCS is such an approachable system.
Dean writes and wants clear and concise rules.

So. Many. Games.
The first rule of fight club is that you hold fight club 8 feet away from the players aid crew filming a game review. Unfortunately very distracting.
yeah, sorry =[
Let the kids play. I wish I could have that kind of fun.
