  • Riccia Fluitans is an Aquarium Live Plant made famous by Takashi Armano, who used it in an unusual way as a carpeting plant, I got mine accidently and keep mine floating, but I'm still liking it anyway.

    It's sorta easy to use as a carpeting plant. Just take a clump floating around on the surface, push it down to the bottom and set a small rock on it to hold it down. When it gets too big just replace it with a new clump.

    I was looking for native plants this year, and Riccia was on my list. I didn't find it, and was pretty bummed, was gonna wait for next summer. Then the craziest thing happened, in one of my quarantine jars of some different collections a spore must have sprouted because the riccia just appeared. I couldn't believe it! I've heard people say that the north American is not as good as the japanese, I guess I'll find out first hand

    My cherry and Amano shrimp would love this plant. Unfortunately, my green hair algae would, too. Once I get that sorted, perhaps I'll try this, lovely plant.
    Thank you for giving us a terrific, species profile of crystalwort (Riccia fluitans) and showing us how well it's doing in your, amazing set-up.

    I purchased a bunch of Riccia, which was green and looked very nice. A few days after I had it floated in my aquarium, it started to lose its green colour. Now it is entirely yellow, looks like my Riccia die already :( I really don’t know what I did wrong. My light is regular Philips 8 watts LED. Is it because the water is too hot for Riccia? The aquarium thermometer constantly reads 29-30 C. I live in Brisbane, btw. Other plants in my aquarium are submerged: amazon sword, moneywort, brazillian pennywort, pink baby tears.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  2 года назад +1

      Hi Dewi, plants are going to find the temperature too hot, if possible reset the heater to 26. Plants do best at 22 - 24, but can adjust to 26 OK.
      New plants will often "Die back" in many new tanks due to translocation shock, and then begin growing again in the new conditions after a few weeks.
      Don't remove the plants, leave them to recover and regrow.

      @dewisalim3320 2 года назад

      @@AussieAquatic Thank you very much. Glad that I haven’t removed the Riccia! My aquarium was set this Spring, so I haven’t installed a heater. It looks like I need to find a way to lower the temperature of the water. I have removed the lid, and the temperature is one degree lower now.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  2 года назад +1

      Hi Dewi, the floating Riccia will usually float to a corner of the Aquarium by the water current from your filter, and from there it just divides and grows thicker and thicker. Good luck :)

    • @AussieAquatic

      it might be best to tie a lump of it to a stone or piece of wood and let it grow down on the bottom of the tank, under good light and away from the strongest current.

  • @AlmightyEye
    @AlmightyEye 5 лет назад

    Hello Colin. Beautiful aquarium!!I know this video is older, but I need some help with this plant. I purchased about 10 Peanut M&M sized balls of this grown in vitro. At first, the plant tripled in size in about two weeks, pearled daily and just looked beautiful. I placed these 10 ball shaped plants in a hardwood tree with many branches and tied a hairnet around it to keep it in place. I was aiming for that natural tree look. But lately, the plant has started to turn yellow, no pearling and slower growth. No tank parameters have changed at all, which is why I’m confused. Here are my tank parameters/
    Ph: 6.4 -6.8
    CO2 injection via regulator/solenoid
    TDS: 180-190 using remineralized RO/DI water
    Gh: 3-4
    Kh: 2-1
    I have a Twinstar 900S light at 60% intensity for 8hrs per day. Had to turn the lights down due to algae issues with brighter lighting. CO2 comes on 3hrs before lights come on, and goes off an hour before the lights. Also, the lights PEAK at 60% for 5 hours, the rest is sunrise and sunset settings.
    Because the tank is only 3 months old and I’m using Amazonia II, my fertilization with NilocG fertilizer has been very very lean. Using the EI method was causing severe algae blooms as my plant load is low and the plants haven’t fully taken off.
    What am I missing here? Can u recommend anything? Thanks for your time.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  5 лет назад +1

      Welcome to the joys of growing Aquarium plants.
      JOY and FRUSTRATION.
      I do see growth cycles in my own plants as well. This may mean the plants have burned through the abundant nutrients we are trying to supply, with a current lack in one of them (not all), but which one?
      Rather than hunting through the list of, potassium, iron, manganese, nitrogen, phosphate, etc, I recommend patience and time.
      What you're doing sounds terrific, so I suggest sticking with your routine, and waiting.
      The Riccia should pick up again. Good luck.
      I'm sure in a months time it'll be surging again. :)

    • @AussieAquatic

      Pretty much everything will grow in an Australian pond, Spring, Summer and Autumn, then die back over Winter.
