Great inital test Adam. I think with software updates and over time this will improve quite a bit. Irobot is known for fixing issues after a couple months. Look at how bad the S9 was when it was initially released.
I think the lack of cleaning around the phone cord is fine unless you store your cord on the floor. It should not be there the next time the vacuum comes around. Thanks for showing this new model as I'm in the market for another robot.
Can’t wait to see how well it MAPS the whole house. I have a large single story home and the Roomba 9+ failed badly attempting to map the house. 24 hours(!!) for the first map and you need three maps for accuracy. Then the S9+ just sat on its base refusing to move. Rebooted it 3x. S9+ would start to vacuum / Map for 3 or 4 feet, then fail and shut itself off. Back it went to Amazon!! Thank you for your detailed videos. I’ve owned 5 different Roomba vacs starting with the very first one many years ago. So disappointed in the S9+. Looking now for MORE ACCURATE AND QUICKER MAPPING. Probably have to go with a LIDAR model. Can’t wait to see this new machine attempt to map your house 👍 Thank you.
If I had to guess, this will improve as they gather more data - there's only so much they replicate in lab. iRobot has started to request feedback more and more from what I can tell (the "how did your robot clean?" popup) .. if I had to guess, they're using the low ratings to analyze and train.
not sure how the AI works in this, but if it has a library of objects like some robots do then its behaviour makes sense, I think. If it can recognise the bottles as self-contained units it can afford to be more aggressive around them as there's nothing that's likely to trip it up. However, if it recognises a 'wire' it will know that those are less self-contained objects and therefore more likely to have unpredictable protuberances that it might not see and will mess it up, hence giving them a much wider clearance 'just in case'. can probably be tweaked over time, and maybe it will even do that learning on-board without needing a firmware update, but either way its actions in this video kind of make sense.
object recognition is different from understanding where something exists spatially so i’d wager that all effort has been put into the former so far. the instructions are probably not “stay X inches away from a recognized object” (because it can’t) but rather “if you see any objects on this list, just turn away”. i’m only speaking as a computer vision hobbyist
Just an idea it would be cool and insightful to see the run time of the vacuum in probably the bottom right corner of the screen. Since iRobots have lower battery capacity. Nice videos!
Mine just arrived today. Running it now and I’m impressed. I had the i7 but I LOVE the subscription option here and the obstacle avoidance is really good!
Great video bro, so you guys know that iRobot can program different objects for the robot to avoid. This will take time. Like Adam said ,really no reason to program in a water bottle for avoiding it.
I just got the J7+ and so far impressed. While mapping, it rambled around the house like a drunk sailor running into everything. but now after a few cycles thru the house,, it slows down for walls, chairs,etc.. and then reverses course. I did get one ERROR message that the room with the base was too dark and it couldn't see it.
Hi, so, I work at one of the stores where they have an iRobot rep. She told us it does not work in complete dark. The led light is just to help the camera see the poop better.
It wasn’t thinking the Gatorade bottle was a chair leg vs the other bottles. It was the orange non reflective color liquid vs the translucent water and the reflective metal can.
The pictures of what it avoided are in the history section. You can choose to leave a permanent keep out zone or a temp one. Then have the option to do a "tidy up" clean where it will clean those temp spots only
I would love to see the night\dark test as that would be the best time for me to run one in my house and will be a main factor in my decision of what to buy.
Maybe it is different between each j7 because mine gets right up next to any wire on the ground it marks where it is and plans its path for one of the sides to go right next to it on one of its passes.
I too would love to see the dark room test! It's always been my biggest complaint with Roomba's. I'm trying to decide if I want to get the Roborock S7 due to the lidar navigation and cleaning in the dark or the J7.
What I'd really like to know is...is it just as bad at mapping and knowing where it is as the previous models (i7, s9)? Or did they do something to address its relative blindness compared to LIDAR robots?
I have a problem, if you have a solution for it, and it sends a message that I empty the dust container while it is still not full. What is the solution to this problem and in the application it tells me to wipe the internal sensor that is already inside the dust container, and therefore dust will reach it from the first operation of the vacuum cleaner, please help
Should do an object test with this against the Samsung AI+, I read it's supposed to be Intel based and have better 3d sensors vs just a camera alone. Interesting to say the least!
@@AdamsReviews Oh it's definitely more expensive 😂 I'm very surprised with the price of the IRobot being more competitive, but I'm assuming that's to save room for a higher end J9+ (If they follow the same naming pattern)
Got the Jet Bot AI+ and the Roborock S7+ a week ago, working on my first video to do the comparison. I will say the AI+ has by far the best AI & obstacle avoidance of any robot vacuum that exists, by a large margin. I have the S6MaxV and it's no comparison. AI+ is extremely impressive in that regard, and also top dog in one or two other categories, but suffers immensely in some very important ways (subjectively)... a few of them being it's ridiculous height (can't get under my damn couch), carpet cleaning ability (worth the trade off for me since I don't have much carpet, and it cleans incredibly well on hard floors and in crevices), and the fact that Samsung SUCKS at keeping replacement dust bags and other necessary parts in stock.
Adam, how many square feet would you say it can clean before a charge is needed? This is a major point for me as the 90 min charge time could mean it would interfere with baby sleeping times.
Honestly they need to find a way to have it not pick up Loose change either... the rollers get destroyed with dimes, quarters, and especially nickles... because they are thicker! Next thing you know you have sections of rollers that have nothing left on them.. just smooth rollers!
Just to clarify: out of the box and for now it can only detect pet waste and cables. That’s it. The rest of the obstacles are detected via bumper touch. Also, No, the led light is not for navigation it is only to have a better look at the pet waste and cable. iRobot says if the j7 sucks up poop they will send you a replacement at no cost to you.
Thank you for this helpful test. I would be curious to see how it works with typical kid debris, such as toys, socks, clothes, bookbags, papers etc. Thx for considering.
Tha thanks for the test. Sadly l think l will hold off until these robots can handle liquids and runny poops as well. Thankfully it looks like it won't be long now.
Please do a proper test we want to see it vacuum around the poop not just see something in random infront. It did not go near let alone vacuum around the poop. I use the Neabot Q11 & it vacuumed around the poop.
The computer vision of the J7 must be similar to the computer vision found in the front windshield of new vehicles where the camera can distinguish basic objects. I'm not sure if there is machine learning abilities in the J7 such as that of the recent Apple A15 SoC found in iPhones but it would be helpful if the J7 could learn new objects as time progresses. I find it unfortunate that the J7 could not distinguish Advil & water bottles during the test.
So, I noticed something interesting on my new j7.....I am pretty sure it doesn't use obstacle avoidance if using just a mapping run.....it plowed thru multiple cables (that it avoided on the initial vacuuming mapping run), would be interested to see u put that theory to test with poop and other various objects doing just a mapping run. This could be very important and possibly a flaw from irobot that should be addressed for a new j7 owner lol....."I just started mapping my house in it smeared sh*t everywhere trying to map it!" Lol
yes, if you trainning run the robot will go into poop, after that you have to enable the object detection feature to make sure the robot do not go into poop 😅😅😅
Maybe my 90 year old (in dog years) miniature dachshund is different but! I think the room it leaves around an object is great. If I work late and she has an accident… she always pee’s right by her poop. If it got closer to the poop, it would splatter pee all over.
The distance it leaves is good, in case it is seeing a cat/dog, so it avoids their tail/feet and doesn't scare them so much. It would be good if you could tell it ok 10" distance except ~3" from cables.
My experience with the J7+ is that the mapping is just terrible. Totally antiquated when it compared to LiDar. The map it created looks nothing like my floor plan, which then means that using the no go zone feature is rendered useless. Two days, packed and returned.
I think it would get on my tits hearing it constantly bumping into skirting boards. It doesn't have a sensor on the front to measure the distance to a solid object (even though the camera should be smart enough to work it out) My Roborock slows down as it approaches a solid object and then bumps it very gently with its bumper sensor.
@@TheDeepsilverThere are a number of LiDAR bots with obstacle avoidance. S6 MaxV and T8 AIVI come to mind for a similar camera system. Dreame L10 and N8 Pro have front laser obstacle detection, but my experience with them and cables, expecially flat ones isn't as good.
