Teacher here. The teacher issue is multifaceted: an increase of paperwork, restrictive policies to help your students grow, lack of supplies, lack of support, behaviors from students and parent that degrade every year, low pay, too much testing… I could really keep going. We have forgotten the purpose of education, that parenting is a verb, and that as a human we can all become better individuals if we do wish.

Teacher shortage? I can't imagine why. Maybe it's the school shootings, or the teachers not being allowed to actually teach facts, or the threats of being sued or the fact that they're ridiculously underpaid, or the jack of funding for materials, having to buy supplies out of their own pockets? Besides all that tho, it sounds like a great job. 🙄

High school teacher here; it's not just a teacher shortage. It's an education staff shortage. Admin is being spread thin, janitorial staff is hard to keep, bus drivers are needed and all the while bandaids are being used in place of actual change. The trend in education right now is interns. Use interns because no cleared teacher is applying but then those interns get burned out due to lack of resources and the cycle just continues. And this is just one of the many failing pieces. The lack of equity in schools across the nation, the lack of classroom teacher input, the low pay and long hours; it is exhausting. I love teaching but being told to do things for free because you're doing it for the kids starts to drain you and I never thought I would be punished by society for choosing to become an educator.

What I found to be the biggest issue is that school administrators are not standing by the teachers, but rather making them the scapegoats of every situation. They're thrown under the bus whenever there's a complaint. They're also accused of being both too liberal and too conservative at the same time because you have parents now who want everything to be taught how they see it, and you can never please everyone, especially if you're providing facts, which don't care about political affiliation.

As a teacher in the UK, I am not surprised there is a teaching shortage. There is definitely one here in the UK! Too little pay and respect for the sheer quantity of work. I love my job, my subject and my students. I love teaching concepts that are tricky and having that moment when it starts to make sense for the students. I have no plans to leave the profession. I will be on my third year of teaching post teacher training this September, but I remember in my FIRST ever lecture on my teaching degree, the lecturer told us most of us would leave the profession within 5 years. If you make it past 5 years, you tend to teach for life. At the time I couldn't understand why, but the sheer amount of rudeness and disrespect from parents is no joke. As well, the lack of support when incidents do occur is just not there - a colleague of mine was ASSAULTED twice last year by students and our school did next to nothing until us staff encouraged her to go to the police. Our union is balloting us next month on whether we want to strike for better pay yes but also better conditions and support. I wish the US teachers luck and solidarity!

I went to three schools (in the UK). I was definitely not an easy student, I had very little social skills due to some neglect as a young kid, but not because I was actually mean to people but because I wouldn't fill out any work and I would smirk whenever I got anxious as a defensive reaction. I got hounded by teachers. I mean that in all dramatic uppercase.
I was very very easy to make cry, so they would really try, I think they felt like it was a good indication I'd learned my lesson, when in reality it would humiliate me and make me intensely resentful. I would have one teacher berating me call over another two teachers when I started crying to continue telling me off.
I know teachers have a hard time. It's a hard hard job. But the shit they get away with doing to kids that are quote on quote "going nowhere" is fucking disgraceful. Most teachers I met treated students like their own little soap opera with me cast as the bad guy.
They got away with lying about things I did, and everyone believed them because I was the bad kid, and I still to this day feel angry that they got away with it.
I sent a text to my friend saying I wanted to kill myself, something we regularly texted back and forth as depressed teens, at this point I didn't mean it, and with the other twenty texts I sent it was fairly obvious.
One teacher was going through my friends notifications having confiscated her phone and saw it. What did she do? Maybe call me in for a personal chat, or let my mother know in a discreet phone call, or call in a therapist to have a heart to heart chat with me?
They arranged a meeting during lunch in the headmistresses office around a massive oval table with seven teachers and my mother who they called in to attend the meeting. I had only been taught by one of them, and been berated often by another, the others were completely random teachers they had invited and who had discussed and shared this message of mine. There was no therapist, no good intentions, just my mother looking embarrassed nearly to tears.
I left the room, absolutely horrified they would read out such a personal text to pretty much the entire staffroom, and they followed me trapped me in a classroom with another teacher, unrelated, then sent in my mother. She didn't know what to do, just sat down quietly looking like she regretted having given birth to me with every fibre of her being. I had never wanted to die more in my life. I pledged that when I would kill myself after this, no matter what. I tried to push the headmaster who was blocking the door (very very very big man) to get out, and the didn't move. They later said that I "shoved" him and said I was lucky they didn't call the police on me and that it would be best if I did not return to their school.
This same headmistress, by the way, went on to become the headmistress of another school, where two students committed suicide and she was forced to resign.
Being alone at home, I got to know myself better, started eating less sugar and caffeine to say awake through the stress of returning, was able to sleep at night because it was no longer my only chance to relax. Started to have a better impression of myself because I wasn't constantly being made to feel like a scummy piece of shit. I realised I was pretty smart for the first time in my entire life. I am 100% going to homeschool or private school my kids when I have them bc of the insistence that teachers not tell parents if kids are suffering from depression or come out as LGBTQ with the assumption that parents won’t support the kids.
I want to know what’s happening with my kid so I CAN support them so the idea of teachers keeping secrets about what’s happening with my child is insane.

I can’t not work and volunteer at a school as a teacher to get the experience - I need to pay bills!- so I feel like my cv is penalised because I took HTLA and tutor jobs to stay in the sector and survive. Every year the hiring pool is flooded with more of us - one job had 100+ applicants but I live in a NE university town so a lot of people don’t / can’t apply out of area for work. One interview I went to had shortlist of experienced teachers changing schools and another job I applied for at a school I was working at as an academic mentor - I know for a fact the teacher awarded with the job was the girlfriend of the academy area manager’s son.
Gets to the point after applying for 200+ post in 18months I literally had to take a mental health break from applying.
I was working a full week and doing work at home and applying for jobs 3 nights a week - it was too much.
This means I’ve missed the May hiring period and now have to look for mop up jobs in September or maternity/ xmas retirement jobs.

As a teacher, the "shortage" is unsurprising and expected. I considered quitting this past year when a boss not only swept a sexual harassment from a student (lower elementary) under the rug, but also gaslit and threatened me. Thus is in top of the unrealistic expectations that were thrust upon us. By the time a student leaves my classroom they should know how to read and have basic mathematics skills. I once had a student who could only count to 7 and knew 4 letters of the alphabet. By the time he left my class he knew up to the number 22 and learned 12 letters. It was such an incredible improvement considering where he came from-but it wasn't enough because he wasn't on level with classmates and I was penalized in my end of year review. These were just SOME of the reasons I was going to leave. Tbh the only reason I stayed was because I cannot financially afford to quit with my student loans (which I obtained in efforts to become a teacher) and the increased cost of living.

OOF.... I related to so much of this, I don't think the RUclips word count is large enough for me to get it all out, so here's just a few points. First off, had an amazing coworker quit during morning meeting one year, and literally dropped the mic we passed around to talk, when she did. All because administration took NO action after a student put his hands down her pants....it was glorious to see her walk out in that fashion, but NEVER should have come to that.
It came as no surprise though really, as I received the same sort of shoulder shrug, when I finally had enough, and reported the horrible treatment, I and some of my female students received from two of my male colleagues. Not only did they do absolutely nothing about it, but stood back as I was branded "difficult to work with", when they told everyone I targeted them for "no reason". Took forever to prove them wrong. The worst part was I REALLY adored the kids at that school, but couldn't stay in that environment, with that administration. I love teaching, but don't think I can do it anymore....after 12 years, this might finally be the end for me.
*Hey, if admin wouldn't say it, then I will, congrats on the growth you were able to help your student achieve. In a class of 30+ kids, that is damn impressive, and you should be beyond proud of yourself. That student WON'T forget what you did for them, regardless of whether or not they actually say it. Oh, and "No Child Left Behind" is one of the single biggest detriments/obstacles to successful students/classrooms ever put in place, and that's a hill I'm more than willing to die on. Anyway, good luck my friend, hang in there...you got this!, and I Hope you have a fantastic school year.

There needs to be a full revamp of the education system across the country and we need to stop vilifying teachers for asking for living wages and reasonable job requirements. Teachers cannot be educators and therapists and tutors and parents and friends and life coaches. It's too much for too little. They shouldn't feel wrong for turning off their email after school and enjoying their weekends. They should be forced to grade from home because there isn't enough time in the day to do everything. They shouldn't be accused of not caring because they need to take time off to go to the doctor or because they are sick or just for some mental health. I understand that your job is treating you as a disposable commodity. I have worked in customer service for over a decade and we get that here from many companies and I know that there are other service industries that treat their people this way as well. It's tragic that those responsible for my children's safety and education are treated like a number and are expected to be able to teach a quality curriculum under overworked conditions.
As for my part as a parent, I understand where some of that stress is coming from. In 2022 we're expected to raise our kids involved with their education (which I think is a good idea). But we're also overworked and don't have a lot of time to do so. So our involvement is still very reactionary. Which isn't particularly fair to you. Employers don't give parenting leave.
Add to that we have an unfair expectation that our kids are being parented while they're with you. You obviously can't parent every child the same way that is best for them, AND necessarily the way the parents want, AND uphold the hands-off (figuratively not literally) way that school officials want you to interact with students so prioritizing your job (at least until you can find something more sane) makes perfect sense. I am sorry you're having to live that way though and I wish there was a way you could have known this was a problem while you were in school yourself.

There are a lot of bad teachers, yeah, but defunding teachers' payrolls, adding more kids per classroom, etc., is just going to lead to the good teachers leaving :/

And their offices are filled with catty women who like to spread gossip. I wouldn't want to work like that either now she works in the Cannabis industry and she's much happier. My ex best friend went to school to be a hair stylist, had amazing nail painting skills. And worked at ABC Warehouse for years for some reason. She's now gone back to doing hair but judging off the pictures on her Instagram she's pretty out of practice. A lot of people don't end up using their college education after they find out what it's like to work in the industry. Most of the nurses I know are single parents who get far less time with their kids than usual. They should be getting more money for less work. These are the people we pay to take care of us, and honestly there's a big quality control problem now, because when that's your work environment, you can only hold on so long to the ideals that made you want that career. When you're constantly exhausted and overworked you stop caring about the granular parts of your job or following SOPs, which means worse care for people in need.

I love my job but I also actively advise those who are unsure about whether or not to become one, to explore other options because if I was even remotely unsure about my interest/dedication to it, there's no way I'd still be a teacher. A multitude of teachers in these comments have already cited the reasons why I advocate for jobs outside of education but those reasons, I believe, especially in red states (and purple, tbf) are strategic.
They want public school to fail in order to prioritize and expand private and charters because they are less of a financial "burden" to the government and skirt the regulations and standards that public education is held to. They are lowering the requirements in order to prove inefficiency and they are making working conditions unbearable (i.e. touting and promoting the ludicrous curriculum conspiracies and the made-up ulterior motives of teachers) so highly qualified educators leave because they are undervalued and underpaid.
They know the solutions to these issues- pay raises across *all* steps of the schedule (not just one-time sign-on bonuses), better funding for classrooms and more investment in teacher advocacy (a board of teachers/active members of the profession that can express the needs of the system and advise). They don't value education because most who are making these decisions and movements have benefitted from a better functioning system (they haven't been a participant in public education in decades) and it is all financial to them.
And, in my opinion, it is worth exploring the idea that an undereducated population is less likely to notice when they're being fucked with/over... just saying.

I would look into seeing if you have enough credits for a minor in education, and then speak with an advisor to see if your current classes “double-dip” with an adjacent major that would at least give you some more flexible career options post-graduation. I would encourage someone who has a passion for education to at least give it a try, but with the costs of college and “requirement” of degrees from most employers, I think you’re right to be wary of graduating with teaching as your only career path.

As a Canadian, I remember getting frustrated with the amount of strikes we had in my school district (in Ontario) since it always seemed like every other year, the teachers' union was asking for the same thing again and again (funding, fewer students per class, etc) and it just seemed like the gov would always just placate the union and do nothing else to stop future strikes. It's not much better up here, but the lack of religious/political interference in the classroom does seem to be slightly better, I suppose.

Aussie teacher here. Initially we though we were losing teachers here due to mask mandates which have since been lifted. However, we still have a crazy teacher shortage. Heaps of teachers are simply leaving the profession due to increased workload, lack of support from the education department/principals/APs/etc, behavioural problems of students becoming dangerous and out of control, students already being multiple years behind in literacy and numeracy which the lockdowns didn't help with whatsoever. I'm actually letting my contract run out and doing casual teaching in Term 4 because it's just getting plain ridiculous. Not to mention even with the teaching shortage, my workplace for example don't want to give me an ongoing contract. Will try full time once again in the new year, however things need to change and our unions are fucking useless so conditions and even wages are barely improving and not counting for ongoing issues with inflation and the increased cost of living. I do hope things get better though, and people need to chill the fuck out because I know in Australia for example violence is getting worse as everyone has become socially backwards and lashing out in particular at healthcare workers, retail workers and education staff in particular which is horrible to see.

The real pain point is that the teacher's unions are worthless. Unions are supposed to push _hard_ for the rights of those they represent, but they stand up for teachers about as firmly as overcooked pasta. Teacher strikes in the US don't do a damn thing, because they don't want to disrupt the education of the students. Strikes might be the nuclear option, but it's really the only tool that they have and they specifically don't use it.
"But think of the children!". Yes, think about the children and give teachers what they need to do their damn jobs.

I am a teacher. I can quickly tell that one of the biggest issues are parents. Teachers and parents are supposed to work together so that their children reach the goals they need to. However, I have come to realize that some parents just don't give a shit. I have caught students cheating. I wrote home to the parents explaining the situation... nothing. No reply, no "I am so sorry"... nothing. Then I caught that student cheating again... again nothing. Those parents could care less what their kid does in school and is using it as a glorified daycare.
Then you have the parents that care too much. They ask unrealistic things of teachers and put restrictions on their kids that don't need to be there. I had a parent ask me to make sure their student ate what they sent them to school with... mind you, this is high school. I am not going to sit with your child during lunch to make sure they eat what you sent them... and that's if they stay at school rather than drive themselves elsewhere. Another parent felt that their child shouldn't have to participate in group discussions, or presentations... so they had the school create an IEP for that student that allowed them to skip those parts of class. This was done during the school year, so we had already done plenty of those and this kid never had a problem. In fact, they were always talking with a group of friends. They didn't need the IEP, but the parent knew they could limit the amount of work they had to do by creating the IEP. Teachers don't give work to students for kicks and giggles. We do it because it teaches them lessons they can use in their lives. This parent limited that student learning some valuable skills by doing this.
I am not saying that all parents are bad... but the idea that it is parents vs. the teacher has expanded. If you are a parent of a student- just ask the teacher what you can do to help. If something comes in saying your child did something wrong, don't first believe that you little Angel can do nothing wrong... just address it with them and then email the teacher that it's fixed.

Elementary Teacher here. I've only been teaching for 3 years now (start of covid) and have to agree with a lot of the other teachers are saying. Personally thinking this will be my last year due to a lack of support in the classroom, not being able to afford the rise in cost of living, and in my case the poor treatment I've received (however I know not all teachers are). The issues obviously span over many other problems, however I think all the problems stem from 3 main issues: 1. The people in charge are focused on making money for themselves so the decisions they make aren't in the best interest of the students but they're pocket books (not all but the majority), 2. There is too much pressure from 3rd party's influencing what is being taught and how we are allowed to teach it, and 3. Teacher burnout. I'm learning a brand new ELA program on top of an ELA program we started last year, on top of everything else they have us do. Teachers are no longer teachers, we're therapist, makeshift parents, and 1000 other jobs.

Parents not holding their kids accountable for the things they do and say in class, and then administration not backing up their staff when trying to establish consequences. I had to break up a fight on the playground this last school year, and when I took the kid who instigated it to the principal, she just sent him back to class without talking to him about it. We're told to preach and preach and preach about actions and consequences, and yet almost no kids ever have to deal with said consequences because their parents have an issue with that. I keep seeing people on FB comments say "Stop complaining! You knew what you were in for when you signed the contract! Get a new job if you don't like it!" WELL GUESS WHAT? Thousands of teachers took that advice and now the system is on track to fall apart any moment now. If you have never been responsible for a group of 25+ kids for 6+ hours I just don't want your opinion.
I taught elementary and quit in May. The job is incredibly stressful, both with the amount of skilled work you need to do but also the eggshells you walk on everyday not to piss off parents. You better not get tagged in a FB post with a drink in your hand or wearing a crop top because not only are we supposed to raise kids during work hours, but have to keep that hat on outside of work and be good moral examples. Buy your own supplies, do unpaid work, be disrespected daily, carry the responsibility of the emotional needs of many students who do not get support at home, make sure all kids get good grades no matter what they've actually learned to please parents... the list goes on.
I got a new job this year that pays the same as what I was making as a teacher. This job requires only a HS diploma and is 10x less work. I have a masters in teaching and can't get more than 38k for a position that has a huge shortage? Based on supply and demand, if you want more teachers, you need to raise salaries but this is a government run job so they will bend over backwards trying other "solutions." It's clear that they don't care about quality education in this country because it does not directly make a profit. They are perfectly happy to let the system burn and say "well, we tried our best but public education just doesn't work!" After bleeding us dry they'll be happy to let private schools have a go. Private schools that can send your kid away for any reason they want. Poor kids, disabled kids, kids that don't test well enough, they don't have to be accepted to private schools. Did you think you could escape the cycle of poverty with good education? With a college degree that you'll never pay off? Ridiculous. This is going exactly as planned for those who gain from the crumbling of public education.

Hey senior student here from Australia so we've been dealing with this for a while. My state has been in proper lockdown for the better part of 2 academic years, meaning online school and limited social contact. Amongst many issues, a large portion of the problem is there were so many students who simply did not attend online school, meaning not only are they behind academically, but their parents are so happy they're at least going now. They don't reinforce the school punishments at home or encourage homework as they're (rightfully) scared for their children's mental health.
The problem is it then falls on the teachers when the classroom behaviour goes awry but there's no easy solution.

Teaching was my dream job. Ever since I started school, I wanted to teach. I taught for two of the worst years to teach-- Fall 2019-Spring 2021, and after finished my contracted term, I opted not to renew and moved away. I cried every single day during that job, sometimes on the way to work knowing what I was about to put myself through for the day. I received no support from my staff and admins who insisted "This is how it's supposed to be for new teachers." The other two new teachers who started with me quit after one year, and I pushed for two, hoping it would get easier. Of course I didn't know what COVID would do to dismantle everything I created in one year of teaching. It was like a repeat of year 1. I have been away from teaching for a year now and I'm honestly questioning if I'm traumatized from my experience. I've been to psychs and therapists and still have nightmares about teaching and feel nauseous when considering going back.
This morning I had an interview for a data-entry job, something with WAY less stress that I could feel comfortable and confident doing. My work history came up, and when I told the interviewer I was a teacher previously, it was like a light went out. The rest of my interview became a discussion of how the community's schools are in desperate need for teachers right now. Despite me saying exactly why I'm not looking for teaching, my interviewer told me that my skills are more needed in our public schools. Waiting for the call that I've been rejected now. I don't want to remove teaching from my work history as it gave me a significant number of skills, but outside employers don't want to see teachers moving away from schools, either. It's hard right now.

However however that is not a reason to put somebody else down you're being pathetic. Talking about their story what they've seen and heard they weren't claiming that they'd been a teacher for decades or any shit like that. if you get offended by someone telling their story maybe you should get off the Internet. The whole fucking nation is having a teacher shorter drink now and it's not because everybody's lying it's because nobody wants to be a fucking teacher I wonder why. There is still plenty of ways to help society and give to them and also volunteer work if you've got the time or money. But trying to shame someone into Taking a job that is more demeaning by parents and students students and society that is that is also a job where people need more government assistance because they can't afford anything in their own damn lives it's also a job where you're almost required to pay for your own damn supplies to teach your classroom that should be provided because it's a public fucking school. I'd rather someone go be a CNA and help a damn nursing home at minimum wage than to stay stuck as a teacher . People seem to think that they get all the time off in the world like kids do they don't realize the continuing education credits and all the other shit teachers do when students are off maybe you need to pull your head out of your ass and quit trying to force people to take a demeaning job that isn't demeaning because of the nature but demeaning because the way society has structured it built it and the pay they get in the way they're treated.

I was halfway through college thinking I wanted to teach. My one cousin & another cousins wife are teachers & they kept telling me how "we needed more teachers" but it seemed odd how kind of pushy they were about it. Had a sit down with my uncle who's a retired elementary school teacher (and his partner was a college professor) & he was actually honest with me. Told me his horror stories, how life as a teacher was for him. He encouraged me not to go into it. I remember looking at my course schedule for the next semester & seeing "field duty" (aka observing the class) & thinking about what my uncle said. I noped right out of that major & switched to something else.

The high school I graduated from back in 2000 used a 4 day school week and it worked very well.
