    My husband is almost 69 and I'm 70. Thanks to this video, we were able to replace both the color wheel and the bulb. We'd had the projector for about 6 years, we think, and the colors were really getting weird, so, although we dreaded it, we tackled. it. Our adult son gave us a little backup. It took us around 3 1/2 to 4 hours total, but we saved hundreds of dollars, and gained a lot of confidence!

    Thank you for this video, Eric. My Optoma S341 started making a horrible rattling sound, and colors were all off after a thunderstorm. My theory is that the power surge caused the color wheel to break. Your tutorial got me through the entire process of ordering and replacing the color wheel. I managed to only break 1 screw housing, and I was very happy when I fired it up and I could see all the colors again. Now, this will allow me to save some more for when it finally goes belly up. Kids are happy to have the projector back 🙌🏼

    Thank you for making this video!! I just fixed my projector because of your tutorial. My screw inserts also broke in almost all the same places that yours did, so maybe that says less about us and more about how brittle the plastic gets with time haha. Literally just saved myself at least a thousands bucks because of your video. I’ll give it a few weeks before I call this a true win, but so far it’s remedied all prior problems I was having with the projector
    Pro-tip for anyone following this tutorial. When screwing the 3 screws into the color wheel with the bushings, make sure you pinch the center of the wheel just like he’s doing in the video. I originally tried it flat on the table and there wasn’t enough compression to get the screws to catch the threading.

      Awesome! I'm happy to hear you were able to get the color wheel installed and up and running! It's been almost 3 years, and coincidentally, I just had to replace mine again. We use our projector quite a lot, and it's been about 4,000 hours since I made this video. One of the pieces of glass broke off from the color wheel last week, causing a buzzing sound, so I went through this process again. You're spot on about the plastic! I do think the heat from the projector makes it brittle over time. This time around, I had trouble getting the color wheel to stay synced up after 3 minutes or so. So, I took it apart again, reseated the bushings, and moved the black sensor wire with the red connector further from the optics. It seems to be working great again! Thanks for the feedback! I'm always happy to hear when people are able to breathe some life back into these, considering the cost of everything these days. Thanks again!

    I too have had this projector for about four years now. I need to replace the bulb and I just watched your bulb change video. The new bulb from Amazon will be here in a few days. As far as color wheels, I gotta be honest, if mine fails I don't think I'll be changing mine - I feel like it might be time to upgrade. The cost of 4K projectors are coming down in price all the time.

      I have open my projector right now :) I just opened color wheel. Two questions. When we know we should change a colour wheel. I noticed my colour wheel has darker round line in the middle. Is it normal?
      And also when is the right time to change a lamp? The reason I decited to clean up my projector is I noticed two weird point on a screen. I tried to manipulate focus and this weird points were blury hair... I have two dogs.

      Perfect! Glad to hear this is helpful! I got some dust in the optics when I was cleaning it up. I had used compressed air. Maybe there’s some way to mitigate against that. It did self correct after a period of time. Projector is still going strong. Appreciate the comment! 😄

      @@EricCosner hmm good idea, I'll go and buy compressed air. I was using a special brush and cloth but it may be not enough. So you say issues with colour wheel are like weird artifacts with colours on a screen yea? I didn't noticed it so far.
      I'm very happy with my projector. It works so well after like 3 or even 4 years. I'll use links in you description too to buy extra parts coz this model is getting old :) Thanks again man! Greetings from Poland

      @@jeger.x if memory services me the original bulb was rated for an astonishing 8,000 hours in eco mode and 5,000 running full brightness. It definitely gets dim the closer you get to end of life so replacing it sooner makes for a nicer picture. After we had cleaned ours, I must have got something in the optics. It was like a piece of fuzz or something. It mostly showed up during the darker scenes of movies. But definitely be careful with the compressed air. You may want to avoid the DLP chip that creates the picture and also the using the air can on the cooling fan may cause the fan to get noisy. The line around your color wheel may be a scratch? If that’s the case it probably won’t affect the picture much because the light is out of focus when it goes thru the color wheel.

    Now to just find a color wheel for my HD28HDR. It was color flickering like that and had to turn it off and back on again. It has been doing that since we got it back from the Optoma service center. I suspect they swapped projectors, because they said my bulb was old when they were fixing the white dot issue. I am sure they just swapped out projectors. Turned it off the other day to go get groceries and would not turn back on when I got home. Replaced the bulb but I still get that Blinky light error that signifies that the bulb or color wheel was bad. It did make noises every now and then, not quite noises either. squeaking and grinding noises I could hear from the kitchen. So I think the wheel is shot since the cooling fan still spools up.

    Curious if this wheel is still working for you. I recently replaced my bulb and the projector is flickering between colors and having power issues, pretty sure I need to replace it. I want to make sure I get a model that works with the HD27.

    • @EricCosner
      @EricCosner  Год назад

      Hello! and yes it is still going strong since March of 2021. The one in the description is the exact one I ordered for my HD27. As I'm sure you saw from the video, it was the index tape for mine, specifically causing the colors to blink and act erratically. If you are having issues with power, it might be color wheel related as I recall it will shutdown if the color wheel isn't working normally. I would try that replacing the color wheel first. If power issues persist, I know some projectors have power issues whenever the ballast needs replaced, but I haven't run into that with my HD27.

    Great Video!! quick question does it gonna work with 143x hd as well??

    • @EricCosner
      @EricCosner  2 года назад +1

      The amazon description doesn't specifically mention the 143X, but I see someone asked the question and reported it would work. I found one on eBay specifically for the 143X and it looks very similar (same colors and cabling) but it ships from China. Perhaps that will offer some clues www.ebay.com/itm/174401235796

    Thanks for this Eric, hoping I don't have to change this for a while yet, Eric 1 question, do you ever use ES explorer, the reason I ask is when I have to move through menus I can't see any of the shades to let me know what section I want to select, I don't know if it due the high white but it should show a grey scale shadow to let you know the remote is on that selection.

    • @EricCosner
      @EricCosner  3 года назад +1

      I haven't used ES Explorer. A failing color wheel could a change in colors, but it's not consistent. You would probably see the shades sometimes. The projector remote itself has settings under Display > Image Settings (such as Vivid, Brightness, Contrast, etc.) that might be worth looking at. If you are using an Amazon Fire Stick, perhaps also ensure that the video settings are compatible. Just speculating but I once had my Apple TV set to HDR color and it made my colors washed out on the Optoma.

      @@EricCosner Thanks Eric, I'm using a firestick and have the projector in vivid setting will have a mess about with both settings on the projector and the firestick, tje main menu at the top and bottom I can see the light shade, I did try it on the app itself for dark mode but no change, I might give it a go on a grey or black background just to see if it help, thanks for the reply Eric much appreciated.
