- We tested nine different projectors to find the best one suited for most situations. There are a lot of choices when it comes to projectors. Laser or lamp-based? DLP or LCD? 1080 or 4K? However, the most important things are: how easy it is to set up, audio, image quality, and price. In this video, Alix Diaconis shows us the best projectors of 2020.

The Verge - how much is the average cost of a replacement bulb though, and approximately how long do they last? That was the problem with the projector that I had about a decade ago, and it would start to distort the image over time with colors that shouldn’t be there (not sure if they burned into the lens or the bulb itself was the problem).
Some of the pico projectors are just as good if not better than some of the bigger bulkier projectors in my opinion.

I feel like watching movie from a projector with built-in audio is kind of the same as watch it from a phone connected to a home theater setup

I have a 4k TV. But watching on a cheap full hd 100 inch projector gives a movie theater like experience.
not even.... the projector is usually near where you are sitting within 3 feet, the sound is always good enough
People who buy expensive TVs and projectors and don't care about having external speakers... Why are you like this
Most people I know how buy expensive TVs and projectors are exactly the kind of people who care about audio quality. And you need external speakers for that, at least a sound bar. Why invest in a good "home cinema", when you have bad audio?

This just makes me appreciate my TV that much more lmao. Cheaper in every way and better in every way apart only from image size.
But watching a movie on a small screen just doesn't feel right.
I'm working with limited space and I think I'll pick up a projector instead of a tv. Ofc the quality in image is different 🤷♀️
but who likes having a huge black mirror when its not on? projectors rule!!
Hurt me when you said you could watch a movie through the mono speaker on your projector.
10w speaker.. 1080p. And paying $800 that wont do well for gaming, daylight viewing, inputs or its own software.

There’s plenty of manufacturers making decent projectors, how does it matter how popular they are as long as companies can afford to keep manufacturing them?
@@martinlutherkingjr.5582 they would be less expensive if more people brought them
I’ve had the HD146X for about 8 months now and I love it. The fan is very quiet if you don’t have it on full brightness mode
I have the HD145x and you can't hear it in Eco mode even in a quiet room. And the picture quality is still very good in eco mode!
BenQ W1070 FTW. Had it for many years. Perfect all-around and fast enough for gaming (40ft HDMI even). I've replaced the lamp once and it's all good for average size rooms. If your goal is good bright image in the middle of the day with no curtains, look for a TV. For me, the bigger, softer image of projection feels like the cinema in your home, and it's wonderful!
I've had the Epson 2150 for 3 years and it's awesome. I have it mounted high in a corner above my L-couch and a 100" pull-down screen in the opposite corner. I use blackout curtains and dimmable lights to darken the room as necessary, but it's actually bright enough that I can set the room lights to 50% and still see the image well.
I think I'd never find a person who finds 70 inches small...
Sounds like cap. I’m 6”3 and a 75” tv is like my wingspan. Can’t even focus on the whole image at once

'Deeper blacks' on projectors are kinda misleading.
its a weird thing, they blend in with the surrounding darkness and its kinda like OLED since it takes your whole vision
Why? Not a projector guy but it makes sense for me meaning it handles better the dark areas since the light can reflect too much on those areas

"A projected picture's shadows could only look as dark as the surface looks on its own and the picture's highlights could only look as bright as the surface looks under the full illumination of the projector's beam." Captain Disillusion
@@Crlarl exactly saying deep blacks on projector is like saying keystone on a TV that's just a term that doesn't have anything to do with image quality for that particular tech
That's exactly what I am trying to say.
During lockdown, I got the Epson eh-tw7000. Honestly, one of the best purchases ever. A tv just can’t give you that cinema feeling. Now I got struck by COVID, and couldn’t be happier to have it here to ease the time I’m spending sick at home isolation.
@Ruubye G Hey man 😊 Yeah, I use it a couple times a week and works perfectly without any problems. Still very happy with it! I'm not sure how's the projector competition at the moment but with this one, all my needs are perfectly satisfied and I very much enjoy cinema at home. Hope this helps and hey, good luck on making your own cinema!
I'd like more detail of those speakers you mentioned. I find it very hard to believe, that projector speakers can be even decent.
they can be surprisingly loud, but hardly decent
I don't understand who would spend hundreds of dollars on a projector to watch movies and not pair it with even some very inexpensive speakers that would blow the built-in ones away.
No BS. Right to the point. I appreciate that.
Picture clarity, brightness, and the overall feeling that the picture just isn't all there has always been the reason why I'd never get a projector. None of those issues exist in a standard TV
If you're able to set it up on a screen and control the light in the room they look incredible. This review is showing them with a massive amount of ambient light.
John Brubaker Even in the best of lighting conditions, I still consider it subpar to an actual TV. Just my personal opinion
Some effort put into setting up will yield far greater results and presence that a TV can't. Like light blocking curtains, av receiver with at least 5.1 surround sound and they don't have to be that expensive either
@@thehotdoglover 99% of people don't watch TV in 100% darkness.
I agree with you apart from one important caveat. Size. That size is actually an important part of immersion. If it weren't we'd all be watching movies on our OLED phones. I have a 65" OLED TV with stunning image quality. Better than all the local movie theatres in my opinion. But. Your point that the picture isn't there is also true of TV because they only ever display small people and small cars and small buildings. You always know it's only a TV. I like both projectors and TV but for different reasons. Maybe a 120" OLED TV with cinematic motion and we'd all be happy!
I don’t understand how ultra short throw projectors are not part of the conversation, these are so awesome.
Well she ruined the vava by projecting it on her warped white wall..then complaining it didnt look good....wtf

Alix, at 0:18 : “I have a really big wall in my living room and even if I put a 70 inch tv it will look small”
Then proceeds to recommend an 80 inch screen for the projector
You dont like the look of a TV but you are good with an 80" screen in your apartment? Lol
Because the tv looks so small on her big wall but a big projector screen on the wall fits better. Also the screen is white with a small black border so it just looks better on the wall than a small black rectangle.
@@PimpTwzt it's an 80" vs a 70"...
@@CanadianSkylights No. She was saying the screen she had was 80" because that was the minimum the projector would project. Projectors go up much higher depending on how far back you can put it and zoom. In most cases 300 inches is the limit. She was showing much bigger images on her wall without the screen. Also consider the cost of a projector at 700 bux to an 80 inch tv. Big difference in price.

Surprised that I owned the best overall projector haha. Got pretty excited. Thanks for the additional research though.
@Alix Diaconis been enjoying it. They don't tell you in these videos how audio works, and this one was the only one in the price range that had an audio out so you could hook up a sound bar or system. Not an expert there or know how most systems work but that definitely helps me in having a good experience. Easy to adjust, focus, get a good screen size, and I haven't had any issues with illumination or sound. Can't wait to upgrade eventually but it's a good starter if one has never used a projector in a home, like me, or on a budget.
Why do you want to upgrade?

I'm with you. I have been using a BenQ Ht2050a for a few years now and I can't use a TV anymore.
I know you mentioned using a screen for a better surface, but I use a higher lumen Viewsonic on a space I painted a dark grey, which gave me a really good contrast for the darker colors on the screen, and much easier to watch when lights are on in the room, or during daylight hours.
You should also look at replacement bulb/lamp costs when determining what projector is best for you. Some are $400 while others cost around $150 or less. They will need to be replaced.
I approve of the amount of Becca and Dieter in this video.
Cool to see Alix getting in on hosting.
BTW I'd be down for a various budget living room setup video, since we'll never leave our homes ever again. (casting solutions, streaming boxes, speakers humans can afford etc.)
My roommate and I scored a cheap enterprise grade projector from goodwill when I was in college. The resolution was poor but it was super bright and threw a huge image in our apartment. Before that we had nice TV's, but after trying out the projector, we threw them all out for the giant picture. Guests loved it and it made split screen videogames so much easier to play. Having a giant picture really is magic and I totally agree about the texture. Im thinking about spending an irresponsible amount on an LCD projector this black friday
The difference between that old projector you had and current day projectors.. home theater projectors... will blow your mind.
Awesome. Everyone wants to see movies and shows this days since not a lot of people are going to the movies. This is a pretty good alternative. Thank you.
I agree with you on the Epson having the best picture. My advice though for a super quiet Epson operation is to get a high lumens one (e.g. 3400 lumens) and set it to ECO mode (produces around 2,110 lumens on ECO)
That way, you'll hopefully get to enjoy a super quiet operation + bright and colorful image of the Epson 3-LCD tech.
How does anyone do a serious review and NOT include the Epson 3200 or 3800 models? They accept 4K and are pixel shifters which are very well reviewed and very bright for family room use. Plus, the contrast is supposed to be much better than the 2150 can deliver. More in line with the entry level DLP models.

@@michaelw6762 it's pretty sweet. 4k looks surreal. Got HDR on PS4. The sound is very good. Picture is nice and bright on my wall no screen.
@@system_eneve yeah 4K is a must if you are going to project anything over 100". I have it setup for a 120" right now on a wall but ordered a screen already, just haven't set it up yet. I haven't plug in my PS4 Pro yet but I will definitely check it out this weekend.
HDR does make the picture look nicer but at the expense of brightness. To me 4K by itself is fine with me though. I think you need a much brighter projector or TV to really enjoy HDR properly.
Yeah the sound coming out of here is pretty awesome and loud. I do wish they would've integrated a sub channel within the projector though. It seems big enough to do so. I need to get a longer HDMI cable for ARC though so I could hook it up to my Atmos setup. Maybe an optical cable would be more feasible though.

Personally I have a surround sound setup paired with my projector and its mounted on the ceiling above me. Unless I pause or mute and have no other sound in the room like A/C its audible but barely. Unless you have a hot room with a lot of heat around your projector causing the fan to ramp up, you dont really hear it. Also don't have it next to your head you will definitely hear it then lol.
they are all loud, if you want quietness go for LED/laser, LG's are often whisper quiet at medium brightness

Any recommendations for a budget projector that can both indoors and outdoors?
I recently got the Optoma 184X and its great indoors.
I don’t know about outdoors, but I guess if you only use it at night, it will give you a pretty good picture for a pretty good price (I paid 340€)
The screen is the most important thing for projectors. Doesn't matter how expensive the projector is, if you are just projecting on a wall, you are not getting the most out of the projector.
the VAVA really needs an ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen to shine. if you pair the two together, you will get the closest to an OLED tv, the picture quality is simply amazing at 100"-120". You can watch anything during the day time with all the blinds open and still get a great image. however a decent ALR PET crystal screen is going to cost you $800-1200. I highly recommend you test this out and post up another review. ALR screens come in UST (ultra short throw) and long throw format so make sure you pair the right screen type with the right projector. Even super cheap $200 1080p native projectors on Amazon will look fantastic with an ALR screen. The best OEM ALR screens are mostly made in Taiwan and assembled in China in my experience.
someone on youtube took a 10 yr old $50 projector outside during the day time and pointed it at an ALR screen and the image looked amazing under bright sunlight. he painted that screen himself using $120/gallon ALR screen paint. will be a nice little art project for yourself :)
I have an Epson EH-TW7400 and I project it on the gray painted wall. I tried to project the picture also on some Elite screens samples and there was really not a big of a difference in the picture quality. So I still project it to the wall.
Aljoša Kavčič lookup Nexi tech ALR on RUclips he has a couple of videos that show how much of a difference between plain wall and ALR screen. You will be surprised.
@@AtlantaGuns I don't like ALR screens. The main reason is that they have a hot spot. In my opinion, this ruins the picture.
@@AK__Productions what does hot spot mean? looks fantastic to me, almost OLED quality.
It means that picture is the brightest in one place an less bright in other. Most often in the center is the brightest if you sit in the center.
I think Xiaomi makes some relatively affordable 4k laser projectors
Intriguing. A couple of questions...
If the screen is white, how does a projector produce deep black colors? I never really thought about it despite all these years of going to the movies.
Also, if the projector is set up behind the couch, basically right next to your head, isn’t the fan noise going to drive you crazy?
The short answer is they don't. The color black can't be reproduced by digital projectors as black is an absence of light. This is why movie theaters do everything they can to keep the room as dark as possible. Environments where light can't be completely controlled (such as a living room) one could use a gray screen to artificially deepen the perceived black levels and enhance contrast.
Sadly this reviews are just for the normal Movie watcher. A lot of informations are missing for the cinematic viewer and gamer.
Missing informations about lumen brightness or about Inputlag, available inputs, fan noise in decibel and color accuracy.
If keystone is enabled, the resolution is reduced and in game mode it is not possible to use. So not really a benefit.

I really like the BenQ HT2550 on a 120" screen for movies as their color reproduction is the best in its class. Also BenQ tend to have the better options for people who want to calibrate the best image. Optomas are great for the price and Epsons are good to use all around. For people who want to play video games though, The Optomas tend to have the best latency upfront and BenQ's have just as good gaming modes. As for lighting, good black out curtains help a lot and you only really need to control for direct sunlight on the screen as screens are made to reflect light really well. Indirect light from the walls aren't as hard on the screen and you can control for it by painting the walls a darker tone or even putting up pictures, posters, etc.
Mounting projectors to hang from the ceiling is really easy with a ceiling mount. Just have to measure things out where you need to do some math to account for the throw distances and giving room to let you focus the image. The closer you put it to it's shortest range, the brighter the image but smaller the picture and vice versa. Ceiling mounting helps a lot with reducing the noise from the projector and takes up less space. Some mounts hook the projector to the mount so it's easy to take on and off to move like to set up in another room or outside for night time outdoor movie nights. Also those who want to go projector you really need to have a speaker system for stereo or surround sound given the projector is basically a mono speaker and won't add any bass. Even a sound bar would suffice.
can you do a video on Epson 1060 and 880x?
She is right about the image hitting the eye a little different. It’s very pleasing. I personally saw a commercial laser projector at a live edm concert. It had me fooled, I thought it was an LED array. It had deep blacks, saturated colors, and unbelievable brightness. I got myself that epson, and wow. It does take a lot of experimenting, but I got that bad boy to outperform any lcd screen I’ve ever seen. It is capable of close to oled with very strict environmental conditions.
what about light of the room ? I think I'll buy it but I'm kinda worried about broad daylight performance
What about Optoma UHD35 or UHD38
LCD projectors use a bulb but don't use a color wheel, unlike implied here. Once you see the rainbow effect of a color wheel it's hard to like a dlp projector, I only ever recommend 3lcd to people. Loved this vid thou
Agreed. Even in the latest high-end laser DLPs I still see rainbows.

When people talk about the life of the laser compared to that of a bulb they should mention it once the laser burns out you can’t replace it where you can replace a bulb.
Very helpful, thanks!
There's a sneaky big problem withe the Epson (and all LCD projectors), and that is that when you replace the bulb, you'll never get the same brightness again. I've heard that from pros who service these things, and they always explain to me how that can be, and I never understand it -- but enough people have said it that I have no reason to disbelieve them.
The solution is when you replace the Bulb you replace the Bulb housing too. Epson bulbs are not expensive. When the Bulb burns out it damages the Bulb housing.
You will lose No Brightness if you replace both the Bulb and the Bulb housing.
@@JesusSavesSinners With respect, I believe that's incorrect. The polarizers are not part of the housing and they begin to degrade immediately from the first time the unit is turned on -- which might not be the same thing as saying that you can see the difference, but officially you can't restore the original lumens rating on an LCD projector by replacing the bulb, with or without the housing. I have that on three independent authorities, two of whom service projectors for a living so I think it's pretty solid.
I currently bought my epson 2150 on sale for 500 dollars. It's the best purchase I have ever made. The projector is outstanding with its contrast, color, and brightness. I can easily watch football through out the day with some sun light. Then at night the image is crisp and bright for movies. There's sometimes with peak bright scenes I have to look away because it can be so bright. The epson 2150 knocks it out of the park. The big onlydown side its not a 4k projector. I don't personally find it to be a huge downside. In my experience I could barely notice the difference between uhd and HD. I have been a editing video for years. The only differences I can notice is usually the details in close ups shots. So honsetly I'm sticking with 1080p projectors until 4k projectors can come down in price. They are currently starting at a thousand for the cheapest one.
where did you get that deal from?
@@sureshkadthan7556 a military base.
I’ve thinking of getting a projector after seeing that 75 to 85 inch 4K TVs were so much more expensive than a 65 inch tv.
I can get a 1080p projector as my big movie screen and the 65 inch as my gaming screen.
They make 1080p projectors with 120hz refresh rates and game modes for gamers. Around $500-700. The image quality of a 1080p projector is pretty good too.
