The thing I find mind boggling is that if the gangs had never called truce, the birth of Hip Hop would have never risen. That has to be considered a historical significance that influenced so many current artists. I was born in NYC, in the late 70's, but grew up in the aftermath of the 80's.
Aneudi Diaz this "truce" had nothing to do with the rise of hip-hop. This truce in fact didn't do shit except call off war with the Seven Immortals, a major gang at the time.
okay, but like they said here. after the truce ,other gangs were able to party in other neighborhoods , which led to more DJs, Emcees and creativity.
Alot of Asians born in the late 1980s and afterwards are university and college types and it's 'funny' to me ( I'm from San Francisco and I know the Bronx is the birthplace of Hip Hop ) to hear them talk about how they love breaking and that between other college peers they have their academics as a shared goal but Hip Hop has nothing to do with the colleges and universities it came directly from Afto-American Blacks and Puerto Ricans in US ghettos of New York City.
@@clips4313 That is not true, I was at the meeting as a member of the Royal Javelins, and let me just say this... In 1971 there were only 9 gang-related murders, the following year in 1972 there were 54 gang-related murders and you couldn't go into other enemy territories as this documentary says, that is complete Bullshit! There were gangs wouldn't even make peace, you've all been lied to! The gangs that made peace that day were, The Ghetto Brothers, the Black Spades, the 7 Immortals, and the Mongols. You guys have the entire story twisted, and following a false narrative told by people who exploited our story to make this documentary! The Warriors is such a great movie. I had no idea it was based on historical events.
SyKoolFy it's not. It's an adaptation from a novel from 1965 written by Sol Yurick. The How Avenue meeting averted a gang war against the Seven Immortals and their allies - Nomads,
Mongols - that's it. It wasn't the start of Hip Hop, it wasn't the end of gang violence in the Bronx and it wasn't the inspiration for the Warriors.
The Warriors is a great movie and this is a great video. Definitely seeing the doc.

Well, the Warriors' meeting was based on a conclave that happened in the book the Warriors by Sol Yurik which was published 14 years(1965) before the movie was released in which the gangs of New York met at a point summoned by the biggest gang of the city(a gang called Delancey Thrones in the book) in order to unite against the Man(Society) in the Bronx and the leader of this gang ends up death when the police shows up which was also based on Anabasis. So, we couldn't say that the scene of the warriors' meeting was based on this, it was actually based on the book. But I can see the similarities between the book and this meeting. I would say it was a coincidence and the producers of the movie took advantage of that in order to make the movie a commercial success.
Remember the wanderers?? IMO it was better than the warriors.

I grew up during this era; South Side Williamsburg (aka Willie B aka Los Sures). This is our history and Im thankful for this documentary that showed the bridge between gang culture and the art form of Hip-Hop.
Great documentary about los sueros a few years ago at the Tribeca film festival...the neighborhood has changed drastically!

One of the greatest scenes from the cult classic "The Warriors" is based on these real events that led to early days of Hip Hop. Who knew?
UPROXX the Warriors is not based on the Hoe Avenue gang meeting! I can't believe people are pushing that bullshit narrative. This meeting didn't do shit except avoid a war between the GBs, Skulls, Turbans and Roman Kings against the Seven Immortals, Mongols and Savage Nomads. That's it!

Bambaataa came on the scean in 1975. He formed the Zulu nation after the gangs were broken up and became crews.
