What a life, what a legacy and what a lovely service.
I am the daughter of a United Methodist Minister who transitioned in 2013. Since that time, I've been searching for a pastor. I'm so pleased to have been directed to Abyssinian during the pandemic. I am so grateful to have been able to hear the wisdom of Rev. Dr. Butts and to witness his progressive leadership. His legacy of excellence and his demand for excellence for his people will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace dear pastor.

Thank you for inspiring my son when he was just 3 years old....thank you for letting me lead your summer day camp back in '82 & your after school program in '84-86 and thank you for having my mom spearhead many fund-raisers and community out-reach projects. Thank you & much love (right on & we can dig it).... for eternity. Rest in Peace soldier of Harlem...rest. God is here.
Another true solider has gone from labor to reward. Many thanks to Rev. Dr. Butts and his wonderful family for always leading by Christian example. Your work and ministry helped my husband and I fill a wide spiritual gap in our marriage and family. Praying for continued blessings, grace and strength as you go through. As a community, we are all here for you!

God bless this man and this church. It was such an anchoring place when I first stepped in this church over 20 years ago in my 20’s. I was baptized here for the first time in life in my 30’s. I am grateful for all the moments I sat in the pews and was touched by God’s love so deeply, tears streamed down my face in the knowledge that I am loved , favored, blessed and watched out for. I will always appreciate the space held for me by Rev. Calvin Butts III and the Abysinnian Church in expressing unapologetic pride for being black, being beautiful, being soulful and being intelligent, sensitive and loved by our Creator beyond all measure. Thank you for helping me to feel confident. Thank you for helping me believe and know that I am somebody. Amen 🙏🏽

Thank you so much Rev. Butts for your extraordinary enthusiastic and generous support of arts and culture. My company and associates were the beneficiaries of being able to present artists and dancers to the congregation on numerous occasions and for many years.The presentations you allowed us to make at the church had a tremendous impact on the community and the artists. I thank you so much. May you be welcomed by the ancestors and lovingly embraced by their joy in welcoming you into this next chapter.
Wish I could've attended was a beautiful ceremony. I remember first time met him 2008 was a young kid in choir and I tripped on the stairs right in front of him. A lot of times during choir rehearsal he would come and visit us. Was always fun to see him. REST IN PEACE REV BUTTS. YOU WILL BE MISSED

Farewell Rev. Butts you were an awesome minister and teacher. Just a wonderful and caring soul, Praise God for you. We will miss you. Rest in Peace until we all meet again.
The pastor was incredible, hilarious, intelligent, quick with old sayings, and quoted poetry like a genius. He gave me that soul brother head nod whenever he saw me sitting upstairs in the church. In June 2023, I'll have finished a master's degree in human resource management and development at NYU. He gave many inspiring sermons about how to be better and how important it is to go to college. I am so grateful for his words of wisdom.

I am the sister of Edgar Kendrick that was a musician at your church for quite some times I have spoken in person with the Reverend Dr butts at the passing of my brother my sympathy goes out to the family remembering the relationship that they had with each other on the church regards and that's friends my deepest sympathy goes out to the family be well for God is with you
What an amazing send-off/ celebration of life for Reverend Dr Calvin O Butts 111 a life well lived already preacher and community leader. He will surely be missed. Harlem has lost a great leader. May his soul rest in eternal peace 🙏🏻
RIP Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, III! I remember hearing him preach at The Historic Nineteenth Street Baptist Church some years ago and he was an amazing preacher of the Word of God and he was so down to earth and a very cultured preacher of the Gospel.

When l was posted in 1986 as a young diplomat from Cameroon to the United Nations Secretariat in New York , l made the Abyssinian Church in Harlem my home church through Reverend Butts influence. He had an overwhelming influence on me and my family and accepted several of my invitations to the United Nations where he was already well known as a great preacher and human rights activist. Reverend Butts made me and thousands of other Christians of the Abyssinian Church strong because he was a strong, articulate, knowledgeable, sympathetic and visionary leader. I will miss his physical presence but spiritually this man will never die because he accomplished so much in his life time. He was a servant leader. May the Almighty God whom he served selflessly grant him joyful repose in his Kingdom .
