You have to get the vst plugin SP1200 called SP950 effect plugin and throw it on pete rock samples to get the most accurate results. Also need a tape simulator and fat analog compression on the drums to achieve more accurate DJ Premier feel on those drums. Very important :)
Jazz Records are the perfect place to look for samples. The reason is because Jazz is REALLY dynamic, with so much changing throughout the song a producer is really likely to find at least one part that they can sample.
Maaaaannnn…I have all this on original press vinyl. I had an older brother pass in high school (‘84) and he had a WALL of jazz on vinyl. Tons of Miles, Tyner, Jamal, Coltrane, Lee Morgan, and on and on. Not all in great shape but listenable. I’m not a producer but I know there are some hidden gems in there. Great video!
Is this the real Grap Luva? Center of Attention by INI is the most underrated hip hop album of ALL time and that had a profound impact on me as a teenager and young man... and Step Up is one of the most chill beats ever created! God bless you good sir
"It's On You" just takes me back to a different time and a different feeling man. Sunshine on the face type stuff....when the world actually had seasons. You threw this on when you were ready to ride out with the windows down as soon as the temperature started to hold steady in the 70s and 80s
That song always gives me mellow, laidback, cruisin down the freeway in the city at night type vibes. One of my favorites from that album but hip hop in general.
Me or the Papes is more technically impressive, but the world is yours is a better beat imo. The warmth of that beat alone makes it one of my all time feel-good hip hop songs. Great video as always 👍
Another mind blowing episode. The production is top notch, the editing is seamless, never jarring, the audio is comfy and never spikes, the scripts are respectful, insightful and intelligent. The love of music and the knowledge of hip hop, and jazz, is just the stuff of legend. Each video is like hanging out in the record store with deepest heads in the city. Damn... Just damn. Thanks man.
This is why I fell in love with Hip Hop back in the day. These great DJs were sampling great jazz, funk and R&B records. I’m a music historian, especially jazz, and these cats were magical in their work
First things first.... As a fan of music, hip-hop, & the art of sampling, I truly love this channel. Secondly, your breakdown & presentation of each song & the sample being flipped was amazing. Finally... I simply cannot choose who flipped this sample better. Primo & Pete doing what they do best makes it a tough call. If we are going strictly off of the metric of sampling purposes & not impact, then Primo actually takes this one. Similar to what he did with Mass Appeal, Premier use very little of the sample, but does so much with it. That alone gets my vote for "Me or the Papes".... Like everyone in this comment sections though, I mean come on.... It's "The World Is Yours"......
@@diggingthegreats @nonamer29 All right, if you like, "It's On You", Google - Nas - "One On One," which flips the same piano section as Pete's beat but swings it just a little bit more. Always thought it was Large Pro, but it turns out it's, Chris Large & 'Mr. Freaknasty,' Raoul Santiago. And also, if you are impressed with "Ahmad Impresses Me," Da Beatminerz flipped a better version in '96 called "Change" for their group, "Shadez of Brooklyn", who they were working with at the time. "Change" was notably featured on Premier's, "New York Reality Check 101" LP. It's grittier/"Dustier", and overall got more of that 'mid-90's Brooklyn Underground" vibe with Beatminerz' distinct crunchier snares.
The World Is Yours version is the winner. That’s my theme song. And on that same Ahmad Jamal album there’s a song where Common’s Resurrection was sampled.
Long-time watcher, first-time commentator: really appreciate the time you put into these. They're all well-produced (no pun intended) and insightful and as a '90s dude, very much speaks to my sonic sensibilities. (Plus, you got a bunch of my friends' books on your book shelf so that's always fun to see.) I've been listening to "DJ Premier Is In Deep Concentration" since it came out and I never realized that Primo layered the Kool & the Gang "Summer Madness" sample with Jamal's keys too. I just learned something new
He's so right. I've been digging through some albums/artists to find their original samples, and some of the songs I've discovered are amazing. Especially so when you realize you've heard something before through multiple artists. Going to check this album out, and continue digging through songs for new and interesting connections.
Samples have helped me find some of my favorite music ever. So many great 70's/60's songs that I would have never known about! You're right about recognizing a sample it actually feels great.
DTG, I love your videos and the way how you convey all these facts about producers and songs. I am learning so much from you. You should cover Nujabes in one of your videos. He is commonly mentioned alongside J Dilla. I love his sound and I think it's right up your alley too. I am really curious how many connections you could create with Nujabes, his production and samples he used, especially that he used a large variety of jazz and jazzy like samples, just like Premier and Pete you were showing in this video!
The Awakening is incredible. I was just obsessing over all the samples on it the other day, truly amazing how much of hip hop's 'feel' was unknowingly created by Ahmad Jamal
I love that you say to listen to music beyond your comfort zone. I often struggle get others expand their purview. Jazz, Soul, and Funk are the precursors to hip hop, so if you're not paying attention to those genres how can you really even understand hip hop?
Love this! Also, amazing that Walter L, which made the stab sample in The World Is Yours, is also the foundation for Large Pro's One Time 4 Your Mind later in the Illmatic album.
Watching this video and others like it,for me there is no competition it's love and respect for the technique of the differences of getting the same song to produce two different sounds of beautiful hip hop joints. These old jazzy grooves are what made me love groups like tribe called quest, pete rock and cl,and others but then to see the work of samples they put into the music gave me even more respect for their sound. Love the video. As you state at the end, that's me,I've always said if I had the talent all my music would cross genres because from my travels I can hear things in the most unsuspecting sounds that would be incorporated in my songs that would literally catch ppl off guard, that's what gets me about many artists I like,it seems as if,like me,they have a great ear for different things and a mental and actual musical library to build on.
I have considered Ahmad Jamal a household name in jazz long before I realised some beats I love had samples of his music. He is one of the greats, specially when you talk about jazz pianists. I mean even Miles Davis has a song with his name on it “Ahmad’s Blues”. Great video as always but I couldn’t let that pass ahahah
It’s truly amazing what these producers come up with. They hear things so differently than everyone else. They’ll take 3 notes from a song and make it completely different. I don’t understand how they do it. Incredible. Premier is the best of all time. So unique.
Great conclusion. I’ve come to hip hop in drive and drabs but this channel has really accelerated my education. So many of these tracks are from my formative years; I could have grown up with them. Better late than never!
I kid you not i was just jamming some of my old 'Pete Rock & CL Smooth' mix tapes a few days back! That said i love all the tracks including the jazz samples they came from. I have loved jazz since days of underroos 😅 that said who do you know that can possibly listen to the all instrumentental Herb Alpert's 'Rise' without immediately starting to sing "Sicker than your average ..." at the appropriate sample location?! No one i know. 😅 i love how some samples are layered so well (where it takes a music aficionado like yourself to help find all the parts) and other are just all in your face where we can all catch that sample in one note. 😊 Also i have a question for Digging the Greats. When you are breaking down 'The Awakening' sample at 8:00 in the video with regard to what DJ Premier did for that Gang Starr track ... is there also elements of 'Summer Madness' by Kool and the Gang 1975? All day right?
The part of the I love music that is sampled by Pete rock is so magical…like when you hear it in the midst of listening to the original song it’s really like an awakening. The world is your feels like an early spring day on the ave when I first heard that song I was 16 this was like 03 I was like wooooooow kept the song on repeat all day. A 💯 with you with the result, music is the winner and us, enjoying those talented producers. Premiere & Pete Rock are on my mount Rushmore of producers
Thank you for always sharing your love, knowledge and true thoughts. Respectful Digging on “I Love Music” for Ahmad Jamal was done by Miles Bonny in 2007 on a song named “Yes I do” interesting too
Man that's cool. My friend Phluid is a music producer too when I used to kick it with them he'd sometimes let us hear his works of art. I dont think I ever tried to us his beat and drum machines. I like beats and have been a fan of Premier and pete rock for a long time
Really appreciated the history lesson, never knew that album was so influential to hip hop. Great video, until the very end when made suggestions for other videos of yours. When mass appeal came out I was like hell yeah and then you pointed to T.R.O.Y. man I literally said how the hell am I gonna pick between these two favorites, lol, good job!
This Ahmad Jamal album was actually one of the first jazz albums I listened to. Got recommended it randomly and it has been in my jazz rotation ever since.

If you're into exploring the most sampled albums and the beats that came out of them, Labi Siffre's Remember My Song was a big one. On the first track alone you find samples by Def Squad , Jay-Z, Eminem, Atmosphere, Miguel, French club mavericks Cassius and Scottish enlightened junkies of Primal Scream
Look, I was grandfathered into the basic Tracklib tier so I when I found out I could upgrade and eliminate sample clearance fees, it was a no-brainer. I’m about to become insufferable with the samples now. 😆 Great video as always. I love Primo, but I will always give this particular battle to Pete. 😁 Please keep doing this good work. We appreciate you! 🙌🏾
A theme in Wrath of the Math production seemed to be sampling songs that had been used by other well known producers in the previous 2 years. “You’re Playing Yourself” and “Whatever” are other examples of.
Oustanding summary as always and i might add that this Ahmad LP is one of those, that you have to listen end2end. It is one of those PERFECT records. I am just abot sad, that your mention of Dj Premier is in deep concentration is such a small portion of the video. This Gangstarr LP on Wild Pitch was my second ever bought revord and this song sealed my love for the culture and fueled my music obsession. Just like Miles with Ahmad I have to poont out that this is a totally underrated Gem of sample music. For the time the most soulful flip in Music - by far - and a look into the future of what was to come for hip hop and Guru did not even rap on it. I just someone in the future dives deep into the rabbit hole on this. I truly believe it was a Game changing piece of music even though incredibly short. Keep on the goodness. Much love from an avid fan.
OMG!!!!! 🤯😵i just hopped out my seat with that J. DILLA SAMPLE... that beat won me over..🙌🏾 immediately.. But the world is yours sample.. second to none...
Dancing Girl on the World is yours is crazy. Thanks, i can hear it underlying. Anyone remember that Dilla joint with the phantom of the opera and dancing girl?
Man went Deep. Lots to experience , learn , appreciate . I stand on the Nas track but I have enough respect n props to the Man Premier. We would all be lost without either DJ Premier or Mr Pete Rock. I can see. Thank you to Digging for this Peace
Premo's is excellent for its creative use of the sample. How he took this unseeming random little part to stretch it out to 4 bars and completely change the mood to something more mellow is a work of genius. And Pete Rock's flip was a moment for the Hip Hop books. It's just a loop but with all the other elements of the beat it just came together in a glorious way.
Pete Rock takes this effortlessly. Perfect beat, Preemo has many of those in his catalogue, however “The World is Yours” defined the Boombap / backpack generation, New York City and hip hop culture all at the same time
Ahmad Jamal is probably the most underrated jazz musician in history. A singular artist that had a major influence on miles Davis from the late 50s onward. His drummer Vernel Fournier is widely considered the finest brushes player ever. It was great to see him getting more recognition with Earl sweatshirt sampling him

Wise words from the master 🙏
Thanks for the head-up on the SP950..... That's dope.
Vulf Compressor is solid too for this, also has SP303 compression emulation
Also for Primo style stuff, always use RX950 (I Think we're more or less on the same page though).
spilling sauce, god bless you
The Number 1 don of the music sample game. NOT EVEN COPYRIGHT WILL STOP HIM. Long live Digging the Greats for respecting and exploring the art
I have always been a big fan of Jeru the Damaja and his music and rhyme style he’s such an underrated rapper
The World Is Yours, no question. I discovered Illmatic late (2002), but that beat was everything I needed. A++
Wow late 2002!

Incredible album! 🔥
So.Beautiful!
Both are so classic, but for different reasons. Me or the Papes cuts on the chorus and the chops are nuts. But The World is yours is a better song.
Ahmad Jamal was a genius, no wonder these 2 great dj's sampled him. Thanks for this inspirational video.
Beautifully done. That was a great video giving props to a jazz legend. It also highlights how hip hop sampling brings new light to great older music.
Me or the papes is one of my favorite jeru jams. Beat is smooth and minimal but so dope. Premier gets my vote!

Just as good as Herbie and Ramsey in my opinion. I'm from NY but I know Chicago got their All Stars
Ahmad Jamal grew up in Pittsburgh, then moved to the Chi when he was 20yrs of age. So, Mr. Jamal was one of Pittsburgh's finest too!

And Pete Rock's flip was a moment for the Hip Hop books. It's just a loop but with all the other elements of the beat it just came together in a glorious way.
Pete Rock takes this effortlessly. Perfect beat, Preemo has many of those in his catalogue, however “The World is Yours” defined the Boombap / backpack generation, New York City and hip hop culture all at the same time
Man, not heard the Jeru joint for time! Used to love that shit back in the day - that beat probably just edges it for me. Classic premo
Wow these are both some of the first old school hiphop songs i got into, never realized it was the same sample
Ain't the "The Rimshots - Dance Girl" sample in the Roots' "Web"?? What a great drum track it is!
Worth checking out Pete Rock’s solo instrumental stuff from the 00s. Apple Music or Spotify will have you covered. Great vid BTW 😊
Mr. Jamal's "At the Pershing But not for me" is a perfect jazz Lp too
Ahmad Jamal is probably the most underrated jazz musician in history. A singular artist that had a major influence on miles Davis from the late 50s onward. His drummer Vernel Fournier is widely considered the finest brushes player ever. It was great to see him getting more recognition with Earl sweatshirt sampling him
The two GOATs. Respect.
Aaand I’m just Playin Myself.. here I go into a Jeru spiral for the next couple of days 🙏🏽
