  • To us Alaska is the epicenter to some of the greatest adventures this country has to offer. After visiting Alaska nearly 4 years ago for the first time we decided we would make it our goal to return on a new adventure every year until they put us in the dirt. This year we were fortunate to take along our Dad. Like most of our trips up to the North country we would be utilizing a Transport service to provide us with as much gear and knowledge we would need to go tackle Alaska on our own.

I agree if you love the outdoors and fishing, Alaska fish has to be on your bucket list.
I suggest going the end of July or 1st week of August to Craig Alaska. You’ll catch silvers, lingcod, halibut and normally the kings are still running. In Craig you’ll find great fishing lodges and guides who will put you on fish.

Great attitude even if you aren't catching anything (Day 2). You know the old adage: _"A bad day fishing is still better than a great day at work!"_

On you next trip you should be trolling at about 2.5 miles an hour for kings. Good luck on your next adventure.

When I was a younger lady, I lived in Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. One year we went on a charter fishing trip for an afternoon and the only fish I caught was a dogfish shark - about 2 1/2 feet long. Of course, as soon as it got close to the boat and the captain told me I'd caught a shark, you couldn't have paid me to get it off the hook let alone hold it for a photo. I now wish I hadn't been such a chicken, haha. They really are quite stunning animals, especially at that size because they (in theory) aren't as scary!

I work at a lodge here in Gustavus Alaska. If you’re ever interested in coming to a place where you will limit on halibut everyday and also catch some ling cod, kings, coho, sockeye, black rockfish etc let me know.

Some advice, for crabs, day old chicken in the bait holders. For shrimp, canned friskies cat food and some regular dry cat food, fish flavored works best for the spot prawns. For kings, you want to fish deep and troll about 2.5-3 knots in either a zig zag pattern or a oval. Bites generally happen on the turns. If kings arent biting bring your baits up into the 40-60’ depth and you will more than likely find silvers and pinks. Pinks arent great baked or fried, but they are fantastic brined and hot smoked. Deep drop offs coming to flats is good for halibut but dont anchor up. Do a drift. If you are drifting too fast, use your kicker to do a slow controlled drift and keep bouncing bottom even as you start sliding off the flat onto the drop off. Halibut will sit on the ledges to ambush. If you manage to catch some cod, the bellies are fantastic bait for halibut. Putting a herring chunk with a cod belly or a squid is really good for catching halibut. You dont need to cut the tails to bleed halibut btw. We do the same thing with salmon, lingcod, halibut, we go under the last gill plate and either cut or rip out the artery there. They bleed out really good that way.

Suggest you guys hit the Kenai in late July for the Red Salmon run. Done it twice. Also, a guide for the 1st day would be valuable!
