    Hey guys! In this video I go over the Big One Velociraptor from Jurassic Park! In this episode of Dinosaur Profile we talk about the raptors from the first movie and their alpha. I go over a few of the movie scenes from 1993 and debunk some theories that have been made up about JP over the years. From the script, to the production notes of the film all the way to the finished product itself, today we talk about the evolution of our understanding of the Big One from the original Jurassic Park! Hope you all enjoy! :D

    Here’s my thoughts:
    While I do think that the Big One was present during Muldoon’s death, I don’t think that it was the one that pounced on him because according to Grant, the raptors hunt by having one act as bait while the others attack from the sides; To me it makes more sense for leader to hang back and let their subordinates do most of the heavy lifting, therefore I think that the raptor that Muldoon aiming to shoot at was the Big One.
    I also think that the Big One was present during the kitchen scene due to the one raptor snapped at its partner, as if it were trying to remind them who was in charge.

      Problem, though. Grant's theory of raptor hunting makes little sense because a prey animal isn't going to stand and stare or stick around at all upon sighting a predator. No modern group-hunting animal has one member waltz around in plain sight as a distraction since the prey would simply leave while the others were moving into position. Now, many do have a hunting technique where one individual surprises and drives the prey towards the others, but until then that individual is still in hiding, not in plain sight.

    • @jpfan4life812
      @jpfan4life812 5 лет назад +11

      GoGojiraGo Sorry for the late response. While you do make a good point, you also have to keep in mind that this is a fictional universe, meaning that it’s not 100% bound by the rules of the real world. Not to mention that the trap that the raptors set for Muldoon perfectly mirrored Grant’s description of how they hunt.

    • @naegling
      @naegling 5 лет назад +2

      for me it doesn't make sense to make the leader the bait. If muldoon have pulled the trigger it would have left the pack without a leader. I feel like the leader should take a more safe position in the attack, also raptors in JP are shown to be inteligent and capable of analyze differents situations, and the big one already know how guns works because she have been shooted before in the movie.
      Another argument i have is, you are assuming the big one to be a normal raptor, but she is shown in the movie to be a vicious one. She killed an employee of the park and even a bunch of other raptors, my guess is, she likes to do "the heavy lifting".

  • @AzraelThanatos
    @AzraelThanatos 5 лет назад +106

    I'm pretty sure that the script is off with which one is the Big One, the one killing Muldoon makes a lot more sense in a thematic and storytelling sense, it also being the raptor to scar Rexy is a big thing there.
    As for being Male, take note of Muldoon's comment about the raptors, he specifically doesn't say Pack, he directly describes the raptor behavior as a Pride. That variant of raptors having a pride based social structure also explains a lot about the slaughter of other Raptors. Namely that the nest Grant and the kids stumble across wasn't from the big one, but his predecessor as head of the pack.
    Basically, the single male for the pride would be killed by the new challenger (the Big One), and the nesting females might have been massacred defending their nests rather than letting the new male wipe out the children of his rival. The two survivors may have been a younger iteration that just hadn't bred yet at that point, and one of the nests slipped past the Big One during the chaos of rounding them up for transfer to the holding pen.
    Hell, the messed up social structure and behaviours from the gap filling might have been the same kind of thing that created the mess as well, and the nest guarding behaviors seem strangely a lot like crocodiles. That might also explain the gender thing for that species of raptor as well because unlike Wu's belief, Crocodilians don't gender differentiate from genetics, they do it from the temperature in the egg during incubation...and Wu doesn't bother to double check gender of the dinosaurs at that point if you consider his response to Malcom's "Checking under the dinosaurs skirts" quip. It also works with the movie in the view that no one really understands exactly what caused the situation, the chaos effect bit explaining a lot more.

      @AzraelThanatos 5 лет назад +12

      @@MechaKnuckles It can also explain the messed up pack situation in the Lost World, it's a group of younger males as a group. They aren't part of the breeding prides, stuck working together, and constantly jockeying and fighting for position in the group. The best of the group might go attempt to take over one of the normal prides, meaning that they need each other, but can't let any of the others get to strong or they'd leave and get something all of them want for themselves, so they squabble and clash a lot more.

    In my opinion the big one is the raptor that kills Muldoon and then calls the other raptor into the kitchen after opening the door and then snapping at it the moment it stands taller than her.
    This subordinate gets locked in the freezer so the big one follows Grant and co into the control room and again tries to open the door before following them to the visitor centre where it is met by the raptor that killed Arnold from outside. The T Rex kills this raptor before the big one pounces and gives Rexy her famous scars, before being killed herself.

    Big one being the one that killed Muldoon: great because of the relationship between the two.
    Big one being the shed captive: great because he/she re enters the situation just in time to almost make the final kill, but ends up being the surprise kill in the twist T Rex entrance.
    I like the second one better because it adds such a great element of hero and villain dynamic to the Rex and the Big One.
    The raptors were very much the main villain of the third act, and the most notorious of them being Big One. So her death by surprise Rexy appearance really amplifies that feeling of heroism that developed afterwards for the tyrannosaurus in later films.

Obviously i have no evidence that would show i'm right, but with the muldoon scene you could at least argue that he deliberately said "clever girl" before he was killed, because he knew it was the big one, since he mentioned that this creature is the most intelligente one of the pack.
    But that's up to your imagination really.

    I have a theory that the BIG ONE is actually the raptor that sat in the open during the scene when Muldoon is loading his weapon.
    I believe that the raptor may have used Muldons knowledge against him. Out of all the keepers in Jurassic Park Muldoon is the Raptors biggest threat.
    So he deliberately sat out in the open sending the one of the subordinates to attack Muldoon while his guard is down.
    When Muldoon utters the famous words. “Clever girl” he’s words aren’t aimed at the raptor that attacks him.
    Muldoon realised that the big one knew he would hunt him first since he’s the leader of the pack.
    One last reason. While Muldoon is beging eaten the raptor hiding in the bushes remains motionless and watched him sufffer. As if he was relishing the scene.

      A leader of the pack that’s described as aggressive and extremely intelligent wouldn’t sit around as bait and risk being shot. In any situation you don’t use your king/queen as a decoy or pawn. The big one was more than likely the one that actually killed Muldoon

    One thing to remember is that the Big One was likely the raptor in the transport container at the beginning of the film, and the way she and Muldoon locked eye contact while he was yelling "Shoot her!" would be a pro for the argument of her being the one who kills Muldoon. Also the way she reveals herself to him, deliberately letting him see and react to her before she attacks, a bit of revenge for him ordering her to be harmed.
    And as others have stated, the Big One being the raptor that attacked Roberta at the end makes sense, seeing as her very aggressive personality and fearlessness would drive her to challenge and assault even an opponent as large as a Tyrannosaurus rex especially after having her subordinate killed in front of her.

    In regards to the mention of the raptors breeding, my opinion is the big one killed ‘almost all of the others’, with one or more escaping to lay those eggs, which Grant and the kids stumbled upon. (Muldoon and the others only assuming that the big one killed the other six)
    The gestation period to incubate the eggs, coupled with the fact that the velociraptors probably protect and incubate their eggs (as in Jurassic park 3), is a pretty compelling case for this as the other raptors couldn’t have gotten out and away from their enclosure without being noticed.
    I always thought it was part of the novel that went to the big screen, but just like the sick triceratops, fell short on explanations.

    In my opinion, the two that got Muldoon went into the kitchen (tracking the kids).
    The one that arrived late to the show (surprising the group as they emerge from the vent) is the one Ellie shut in the maintenance shed.
    Muldoon’s exclamation: “I’ve got her!” suggests he thought he was tracking the Big One. The “Clever Girl” remark wasn’t so much praise for the one that surprised him, but his acknowledgment that they had coordinated the attack - with him apportioning greater agency to the one that lured him into position (perhaps with the Big One aware enough to know that he would make the effort for her but perhaps not for either of the other two).

  • @wargamingsupernoob

    I have to say that, based on the kitchen scene and the scene with Rexy, the Big One was (a) the dinosaur that bit at the other one when they entered the kitchen, and (b) the last dino to jump on Rexy's back. I am going off of my experience with animals and the way they behave. For dogs specifically, if it's two males, the one that humps the other one is the dominant one (true fact). I'm taking that factual info and applying it to the movie. If you notice in the night with Rexy, and what Muldoon said earlier that "she had them attacking the fences, but Not In The Same Places. They were Probing for weaknesses", the Big One saw what happened to the other one and didn't try the same tactic, but instead saw that Rexy's weakness was her back, and she attacked there. Also, Klayton, going off what I just said and what you mentioned, go back and re watch the scene where Muldoon dies. Based on behavior and body movement, I think the Big One was the one who kept Muldoon's attention. I think that's the same strategy she used against Alan and the others. Let the subordinate do it initial attack, and help out if any try and escape.

    personally, i'm convinced that the Big One is the raptor that's menacing the characters for most of the climax, the one from the kitchen that didn't get locked in the freezer, which also means that it's the last one killed in the film, and was also the raptor that killed Jophrey and Muldoon. it all just makes much more thematic sense that this raptor who stops to see the fear in people's eyes several times throughout the film is the leader, and it's fitting that it's the last one to die in the film AND which gave Rexy her now-iconic scars.

    I think the script is the most reliable source because the writers have a duty to make things flow and have the big picture in mind. Also can make sense that the Big One would be independent having the other 2 keep watch outside of the power shed. While the other 2 then go to the visitors center Ellie has the chance to leave the power shed safely and meet up with the others. The big one then escapes and makes its way to the visitor center while the third raptor is attacking them in the control room. Then Ellie, Grant, and the kids come face to face with the Big One in the lobby while the other makes its way around. After that point I lose track since it's been a while since I last watched the movie.

    Hey Klayton :)
    I think the Big One is the raptor who kills Muldoon, because of their "relationship" and her way of thinking (solve problems, with Muldoon being...a problem!). Also, she is able to stalk Lex and Tim in the building to the kitchen, and when the 2nd raptor enters, she's dominating him by her size and her small bite to the neck. In my opinion, the Big One is not the raptor being eaten first by the T-Rex, but the one who jumps on it and who's responsible for its scars later in the franchise. Due to the structure of the building, the eaten raptor was coming from outside, but the Big One was chasing the survivors from the inside, from the other side of the buidlings entrance. This point means the Big One is also the last enemy to die: as a scenaristic way of thinking, the bad boy in a movie always die during a climax isn't it ? :) Thanks a lot for your videos ! Absolutely love them all !

    So, I thought about this some last year but I've kind of gotten conflicted. However, I believe there are a few ways to tell who the big one is and you don't really get the clues to find out until the Kitchen.
    The most noticeable part on screen of a Raptor hierarchy is during the kitchen scene where a Raptor nips at another raptor and it submits. This raptor that does the provoking is my best guess of being the Big One, and if you follow where THIS raptor goes, you can figure out which raptor is the Big One during the deaths of the velociraptors.
    Also, keep in mind that the velociraptor that nipped at the other one is also the one that we first see opening doors. Granted, the one that killed Arnold also had to open a door to get to the visitors center, but we are shown this raptor being the first to display the ability and opening the kitchen door AND the control room door.
    So, the Big One and her subordinate are inside the kitchen and her subordinate gets locked in the freezer. The kids escape and find Alan and Ellie and go to the control room. The Big One follows. The scene of the velociraptor pursuing the humans shows the velociraptor "working things out" as Muldoon says in the film at the feeding scene.
    This part is important! It realizes the door isn't working so it'll just burst through the glass. Then it's trying to think of a way to reach them above her. Keep in mind how analytical this velociraptor is, how it knows to test weaknesses of the fence. She hurls through the vents and nearly grabs Lex, then continues to pursue them.
    After some skeleton shenanigans, the group is cornered. The other raptor comes in from the opening in the building and locks eyes with Ellie, giving us a clear indication that this is the same raptor as before.
    Now, this is where the raptors start dying. The first raptor grabbed is the one that was with Ellie and Arnold as it was on their left side and closest to the tarp. So that leaves us with the last raptor standing. My belief is the iconic raptor/rex fight happened with The Big One herself. This same raptor that died last happens to be the same raptor that nipped at her subordinate and chased the group through the center.
    One thing I don't know is which Raptor killed Muldoon but I do feel like they intended for that to be the Big One for thematic reasons.
    anyway that's my belief on the big one! definitely one of the greatest characters

  • @cruxer1949

    I think the one who killed Muldoon, the initial one Lex sees when she’s eating Jello, the one that rams her head in the cabinets, the one who smiles as Lex and Tim are escaping only to be followed by her to the computer room is the big one. (Incidentally, right before Echo is killed, when she’s looking at Owen, she has that same smile the big one had when she watched the kids escape.) I think the big one had one of the smaller ones to go after Arnold and waited for the others to come out to find him and then she tracked Muldoon and Ellie. I always figured since she seemed to be the most aggressive, she was the big one.

    Also I'd say that there is a completely plausible means of narrowing down which Raptor is "The Big One." Because this animal shares something in-common with Blue...it has a Personality.
    Literally speaking, why is it that when the raptor that ambushes Muldoon chooses to reveal itself first and snarl at him - in real life, an animal pouncing on its prey would immediately go for the kill...But this raptor chose to stop and reveal itself to Muldoon, and the simple fact is, it's snarl is more akin to a sinister grin. THIS is the animal expressing its animosity toward Muldoon and it's desire to have outfoxed and overcome him - the Alpha Ape as the comics would describe.This was a plot point that was built-up in the movie since the first scene, from the moment the Big One attacks Geoffery and Muldoon tries to pull him from its grip; the two of them lock-eyes with each other, cementing their hatred for one another.
    The Big One, emerging from the foliage for that brief moment so that Muldoon knew for SURE what - and who - it is that hit him, was the animal's way of proclaiming its victory over him.
    The animal does literally the same thing to Grant later on during the climax at the control room. Effectively speaking, the animal could've immediately grabbed the handle and tried to push the door open while Grant was unawares - probably would've surprised Grant, knocked him back and given it access to the control room where they'd be at its mercy. But instead, it's driven with such an overwhelming desire to kill them all...that it taunts them about it.
    It chooses to be seen at the window in the door, staring through DIRECTLY at Grant, "smiling" the same way it did to Muldoon, before snorting its breath on the window. It was the animal's means of saying, "You think you're safe in there?" before slowly going down to the knob. I honestly think the animal WANTS the challenge of having to overcome them in order to prove its superiority.
    But the thing that proves to me that THIS animal was indeed "The Big One," was what happens after Lex tricks it into ramming headfirst into a reflective panel. After it recovers, it could've easily sprang on Lex and Tim easily running them down - Tim has a limp after all. But instead, as it gets up...it just watches them leave. The camera then zooms in on the animals face as its eyes narrow into a scowl and it sneers at the two children as they flee; THAT right there...is Malicious Intent; this animal KNOWS that it's been slighted, that the children outwitted it and killed its pack-mate...so now, it's going to do everything it can to ENJOY killing them.
    I honestly think that the Koepp script that says "The Biggest of the Raptors" isn't meant to be an "individual" description...See, it's like how Grant in the novel uses the term "Raptor" as a blanket statement for the genus of creatures rather than individual species. And at that time "Velociraptor Antirrupus" (Deinonychus) was the largest variety of the Raptor family found in the world; the Utah Raptor wouldn't be found until a few years later, and the Megaraptor was a few years after that. That's probably why Crichton chose Deinonychus in the first place.
    Truth be told, when it came to the "Randy and Kim" theory, I stuck to those names because of the simplicity's sake...but somewhere along the lines, I took to calling the female that accompanied the Big One in the Kitchen (gets locked in the Freezer) as "Amy" for some reason...

  • @GrapeKioshi
    @GrapeKioshi 5 лет назад

    I think the Big One is the raptor who first enters the kitchen to look for Lex and Tim. It calls the other raptor to come assist it and it snaps at the other raptor for having its head raised higher as it enters, which is a fairly obvious dominance display.
