@@LifesGoodG well you have 2/4/6.... squares. And you stand in a square and have to bounce the ball once in your square and have it lend in another square. If you don't bounce it in your square, its a fool, if it bounces more than once in your square its doubles, if the handball touches the line then its lines and therefore play on.
I grew up in NYC, handball courts always packed from sun up to sun down in the city. The ball use to cost 25 cents, they lasted a day or two before they split open. You could wait for hours to challenge someone for a game if you didn't get to the park early. Great game, the best players are lighting fast and often scrap knuckles or palms on the concrete trying to make a shot. Best cardio workout you can get. Try playing this game for 2 or 3 hours on a sweltering 90 degree day in July! You will stay trim!
I have played racquetball for years and have tried handball a few times but the hand-eye coordination is harder than it looks. Much respect to you guys!

That's actually Gaelic Handball which has been played in Ireland for decades. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is an official league that promotes such games, it's a pretty big league and community.
I grew up in Queens and, 40 now, and I recall playing "American" handball and "Chinese" handball. In American handball you had to hit the ball directly on the wall; in Chinese style, we had to bounce it first. Any other New Yorkers remember this?

This is a variation of games played in latin america, ireland, england and the basque region in spain, and france. The game known as handball in the united states was brought to the u.s. by irish immigrants in the mid 1800s and was called gaelic handball. Americans have been playing handball ever since. Its a lot older than the team sport known as handball in europe, which has only been around since the early to mid 1900s. there are many variation of handball in the united states, specifically 4 wall, 3 wall and 1 wall. Handball or a similar game in Ireland has been around since the 1500s.
***** I had completely forgotten about that handball lol. I was thinking the handball that you usually play in schools small rubber high bounce balls in squares
Handball shown in this video has been around for a long time. It is a very tough sport you have no racquet which extends your reach and the palm of your hand is much smaller than the sweet spot on a tennis or racquet ball racquet. I believe that the ball is similar to a racquet ball but slightly smaller and harder. It is also painful until you get used to it.
wow man, this is slightly different from handball in queensland Australia - come down man and show us your stuff and we can show you ours - thousands of kids play Australian handballs every lunch and this will be an awesome learning experience.
lmfao @ all these haters outside the U.S. Yes, it has the same name as other sports and may have been inspired by another sport, doesn't mean it's not it's own sport.
When I was in elementary school, we'd play a game similar to this. Except we called it "Wall Ball." We used the same ball as these guys but we'd THROW it against a wall. If somebody caught the ball, then the thrower was out. But if the person catching dropped the ball, the thrower had to run and touch the wall. The catcher (if ball was dropped) had to peg the runner(original thrower) before they touched the wall. It was lit.
Ronold Cledor Thats interesting. What's also interesting is how children from around the world who have no connection to each other come up with the same behaviors, slang, and games.
My favorite sport i played single or double back in the days late 80s thru early 90s in the BRONX. Those were my good old days. R.I.P. David Santiago (brother in law) taught me well and played a heck of a game.
Jarlath Leonard I did not mean to be rude just imparting what i know.Yes its irish. In fact .Not promoted right in this country. Its never on RTE ,sometimes on tg4,but it needs to be promoted better. For the world championships in ireland a few years ago they presented the game very well .City west was kind of transformed into the center court of handball.
hell yeah ! this sport comes from the basque country , we call it esku pilota ,we play it with a ball made out of leather and a stone inside of it ! i never played it with a rubber one, in here we have a line in the wall and if the ball goes lower than that is a point for the other player. i didn't know this sport was played in america, quite interesting.
I’d love to introduce my version of this game to the world. We played it when were kids in school in California. It’s major difference with the “normal” version is it’s full contact and the ball is larger and softer, allowing for harder strikes and more chances for players to utilize erratic deliveries and make the ball do some funky things. Also it has to bounce at least once before you hit it, and bounce at least once on its way back to the wall. If anyone’s interested in learning more let me know!
Idk what kind of handball that is, but the handball we play in AUS is a bit different. We have squares and in a 1v1 match up, the two competitors get in a square and bounce the ball to each other, using powershots and stuff to get them out, you lose if the ball bounces twice in your square, if the ball goes out of the square or if you simply miss it.
When I was at high school here in England in the 80s we played this and yes we called it handball. Great game. all you need is two people, a cheap ball and the side of a building. The only difference is we would have a limit to how high up the wall you could go.
Exactly, this game derives from Gaelic handball, which was similar to a sport played in ancient Egypt. This really is the oldest sport, and the first true Handball game.
I played in Bangladesh at St. Gregory's High School Dhaka since 1975 to till 1983 till complete my SCC year. We had total 3 courts that time & it was a great fun to play Handball, still i missed that game & i never found this any where at Bangladesh even i lived in Sydney Australia but did not see any handball court there i really missed this game very much. wish i could make my own in my home someday.....
"is bigger than you think" Seeing this video pop up in my reccomended and reading the title, this is the first time i've heard of Handball outside of Elementary school gym class.
Back in 1960's Brooklyn - when I was 13 yrs old - I was unbeatable at handball. I played about 15 games per day and was on the school team. We played with spalding balls. I would be at the school handball court an hour before class and play several games; then at lunch time it was back on the handball court for another hour. After school, more handball. Everyday.
Brandon Cosme maybe in the US in Europe it is pretty Big. Biggest Sport after Football. you should watch some videos, it is pretty intense. interesting to watch aswell since there are no long breaks
I'm from queens. I used to stay in Bushwick growing up so there was handball games on every other court. This was the handball I grew up on so learning that there was another game called handball was mind boggling.
The thing is that it is not as big of a deal as this seems to be, and i dont like the fact that the nyc version could be an "olympic sport" before the other is even consider
The modern game of handball originated in Ireland and Scotland. The earliest written record of a handball game is in the town statutes of Galway, which in 1527 forbade the playing of ball games against the walls of the town. On the west coast of Ireland, Galway had many trading links with Spain, especially the Basque regions, where the similar game of Pelota is played. It is highly likely that one game is derived from or influenced by the other. Irish immigrants brought the game to many countries in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It is still played in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Wales and England.
Loved this game growing up in Long Island. Can’t tell you how many times we would look for change to go buy a ball and play. Wish it was in more of the us. Moved to NC and we don’t have any courts.
***** Yes ,but i am not sure there is any danger of that game making it to the olympics and being confused with handball.I know of a woman involved in handball in ireland who is trying to get it into the olympics. They are number of associations that govern handball and there are coming together to try and get into the olympics and wallball is the name they are going to use.Outside the olympics they call the sport handball again.
+Ihavejust Roastedu and then theres redbutt where you have to hit the player to get him out, and thats why handball got banned in my school in any form :p
You're thinking, "Oh a ball and a wall and you hit the ball at the wall, haha that's stupid". You honestly have no idea. This requires high fitness and skill. This is also one variation of the sport. Its derived from Handball in Ireland. Look up Paul Brady playing someone as an example in GAA Handball.
The version I played had to bounce on the ground before hitting the wall. If the ball is hit straight to the wall without bouncing off the ground first, it's called direct and the next person re-serves
In cuba we play handball combined with baseball, we have the 3 bases plus home base we walk to 1 run to 2 walk to 3 and run for home,we use only 4 people 1 in each base plus the shortstop, amazing game 👌🏻
This is not handball!! The original game is called "Basque pelot" and it's play in The Basque Country (Spain). Come here to play basque pelot!! Handball is a copy of Basque Pelot!
+xXabiAlbiXx A estos los traes al Pais Vasco y no duran un asalto, con esa pelotita nose donde está la complejidad del juego....que yo hacía eso con 4 años jajajaja
Basque "Pelota" describes a number of court sports using a racket a bat or ones hand this sport is hand pelota or if your English it is called Fives a game developed by public school boys were you hit a ball against a wall using your bear hand there are two types Eaton Fives and Rugby Fives
Anyone from NY can tell you what Handball is. Mad popular in the 80's and even more so today. There are courts everywhere from NYC to the end of Long Island.
Well, making a quick research I have just read that this kind of handball was played in Egypt, so I guess the cultural dispute is pointless. But anyway and just for the record, basque culture is pretty old as well, it is one of the oldest ones in Europe, and here this sport goes back to the 1200s. And its variation with a basket (jaialai) became very popular in the states, specially in florida. Cheers to all gaelic fellows!
i remember going out to recess in my elementary school in NY, has a big brick wall and and a hill leadind to it... handball was what we played almost every day
Marco Couto lol this is just ghetto. I play handball with a playground ball and you hit it on the ground and it bounces off the wall. I have nevver seen this handball before it is very wierd
Marco Couto shit never new it was "handball", growing up out here in the Southern California it was just something to pass up time. Kids new it more as a prison sport... we just didn't have money when we were kids to buy recreational balls for actual sports
Marco Couto we don't go around checking other countries to see if names are the same. It's not a huge deal bro relax. Different cultures have different names.
Wait this isn't hanball ... oh yea there we see the american cultural imperialism (they did the same with football) : take an european sport : pelote basque à main nu/rugby then change it a bit, give it another european sport name and make it american : handball/football there you have it, it's now american. American culture is so great !!
I actually played this in junior high. But we played it differently. So instead of hitting the ball, we would catch the ball and whip it back at the wall. If you got hit with the ball during or after, you were out so you had to look both ways
we play a completely different version of handball in Australia. I was pretty suprised when i watched this.
Hassan Khan YES!! gotta love then slogs, twisting!

+Ihavejust Roastedu and then theres redbutt where you have to hit the player to get him out, and thats why handball got banned in my school in any form :p
stoney71 i play handball but in a court with four walls not one
potato Its the one wall version they are trying to get into the olympics. The irish are much better at 4 wall than one wall.
used to play in upstate NY and always dreamed of being good enough to get on those courts and play. someday maybe..awesome videos...NY rep
So it's squash without racquets. It's interesting to see all the different version of "hand ball"
It sure it
this is better than bumass squash
Greatest sport, closest thing to martial arts, hand to hand combat for sure, everyone should try
Great video, Red Bull is helping the unknowns as usual.
LOL... "most intense sport ever"
Go to a tournament in NYC and you'll know.
New York is an amazing place
most definitely not more intense than any other sport out there
hans rockwell it's Ny. He's from ny. They all think and talk like that lol
Malaquias Popocateptl grandoise minds and highten exaggeration
this handball in this video is from ireland and part on the gaa for everyone wondering
This is just hood racketball
The version I played had to bounce on the ground before hitting the wall. If the ball is hit straight to the wall without bouncing off the ground first, it's called direct and the next person re-serves
wallball...
Handball is an official Gaelic game in Ireland, class to see its big in other parts too
this sport is from basque country EUSKADI HAND BALL. AND THE BALL IS NOT PLASTIC
Unai Alberro horixe!!
Unai Alberro ahi ahi
Unai Alberro ahi, bien dicho
In cuba we play handball combined with baseball, we have the 3 bases plus home base we walk to 1 run to 2 walk to 3 and run for home,we use only 4 people 1 in each base plus the shortstop, amazing game 👌🏻
But handball is something different....
No it isn't.. this is handball. You're thinking of European Handball
Andrew lol ur wrong this is not handball
in Australia its called downball and usually primary school students play it lol
it's a very old game played in spain and france... named pelote basque
This is not handball!! The original game is called "Basque pelot" and it's play in The Basque Country (Spain). Come here to play basque pelot!! Handball is a copy of Basque Pelot!
Basque "Pelota" describes a number of court sports using a racket a bat or ones hand this sport is hand pelota or if your English it is called Fives a game developed by public school boys were you hit a ball against a wall using your bear hand there are two types Eaton Fives and Rugby Fives
No this is handball stupid. And i aint coming out to no other country. Usa is the best!
Anyone from NY can tell you what Handball is. Mad popular in the 80's and even more so today. There are courts everywhere from NYC to the end of Long Island.
Bro the only thing that gets me depressed about moving out of New York is not being able to play handball 🥲
I've peen playing this game since I've discovered porn 😑😂
Handporn?
this is a sport played in the Basque Country called "eskupilota" (esku=hand, pilota=small ball) in our language Euskara.
When you can't afford a tennis racket
When tennis rackets are for pussys.
Why do i feel these are the only guys in this city that like handball this much and redbull needed a cool story..
Search for the original sport: pelota vasca. The ball is more like a small baseball instead of rubber.
Brutal I played with no gloves for about an hour and my hand was very swollen and red by the end. So much so I couldn't even make a fist.
cant really say that pelota vasca is the original sport when hand ball is a traditional Irish sport played since 1527 in Ireland
Cheers to all gaelic fellows!
i remember going out to recess in my elementary school in NY, has a big brick wall and and a hill leadind to it... handball was what we played almost every day
handball is a actual sport, and it looks nothing like this.
americans love to just name their sports after others with no little respect dont they?
Marco Couto lol this is just ghetto. I play handball with a playground ball and you hit it on the ground and it bounces off the wall. I have nevver seen this handball before it is very wierd
Marco Couto shit never new it was "handball", growing up out here in the Southern California it was just something to pass up time. Kids new it more as a prison sport... we just didn't have money when we were kids to buy recreational balls for actual sports
Marco Couto
Marco Couto we don't go around checking other countries to see if names are the same. It's not a huge deal bro relax. Different cultures have different names.
Marco Couto We get it Brazil is bad and they would love to be As Badass as America
I played this in my youth days. Its a lot of fun.
And still is!
that shit aint naw handball
this is gaelic handball(irish origin)
this is the ghetto version of patball, which is the budget version of fives, which is squash without racquets
Can I play with no hands?...
Yup. it's called football
Jorge Luis lol yea
I mean it was a pretty bad joke but fucking relax lol
Lol I can say that it was the worst joke ever that's why it's funny lol
Been playing this since i was a kid. We called it Patball in England i guess around the world theres different names for it.
Wait this isn't hanball ... oh yea there we see the american cultural imperialism (they did the same with football) : take an european sport : pelote basque à main nu/rugby then change it a bit, give it another european sport name and make it american : handball/football there you have it, it's now american. American culture is so great !!
Leorio it originated in Ireland so... FUCK OFF?
HA! Rugby, Soccer(football), and American Football all stemmed from the SAME sport, and separated at the same time.
-West
***** lol
It's called handball because it's played with your hands. No one over here even knows what your sissy euro version is.
Connor Appel so much ignorance...
I actually played this in junior high. But we played it differently. So instead of hitting the ball, we would catch the ball and whip it back at the wall. If you got hit with the ball during or after, you were out so you had to look both ways
100% at least 1 person out of every California prison would beat this fool like he wasn't even playing.
Billy and Rachel Best comment on here
They're garbage in Cali, I'll be in Venice in a few hours playing money games. All second rate players.
GOTTA LOVE IT!!! ONE WALL HANDBALL RESPECT TIMBO😆😆😆
