My interpretation of this song is how your friends give you a home when your real home doesn't feel like home anymore. Friends don't judge you if your poor or how you look. "When you see my face, painted up with sin" is when your friends draw on your face when you pass out, then "cover me again" when they bring you a blanket because even though they humiliated you, in the end they truly care about you.
