I haven't yet watch the video as of writing this comment and basically stopped where you said how you cheat. This is how I did it and spotted all the differences in about 5 seconds. I trid to look far, even though I was literally 8 inches away from my phone screen. Then the two photos move toward each other and merge, kind of like the method we used to use to see the 3D images that you could find in old magazines. Then what happens is you could spot the differences right away because those parts will pop up in front of your eyes. This is hard to explain especially for me as a person who speaks English as a second language. Edit after watching the whole video. What you did with GIMP, I did the same with my naked eye and the result was exactly the same. Cool video nonetheless.
Lol- by the time you did all this, the time is out. Use Magic Eye technique. (Cross your eyes just enough to clearly see the same picture between the two on the screen). Each difference will then appear to “glow”.
Who the heck has this much time if you're in a timed competition

This technique is called Magic Eye.
I've decided this has changed my life.
Hehehe
I think those magazines were called "Highlights".
