When I started traveling, on my first day in a new city, I took the "poor man's tour", taking the local bus to the end of the line. Get a window seat and make notes of stops that look interesting. When you get to the end of the line, get back on and do the trip in reverse. Get off at the stops you noted and walk around for awhile, then get back on the bus and keep going. It's a great way to learn your way around at a low cost.
LOL! That's exactly what I did in my youth while on annual vacations to Paris and ended up learning the public bus system like the back of my hand. I still use the public buses regularlry when in Paris and I'm now in my 60s. I like to look and see where I might want to jump off the bus, check something out, and then back on the bus to keep going. It's a great way to discover a new place. Greetings from Los Angeles
After days taking the Paris Metro, my family took a trolley around the outer loop of Paris. There are lots of wonderful, more affordable neighborhoods to visit.
I rode the subways in S. Korea and found interesting places, entertainment and street markets by getting off most of the stations and walking around outside the stations.
10 years ago today, I was in $176k of debt and had zero savings and zero retirement. Now I'm debt free and on track to retire in 9 years. Videos like yours offer constant motivation to make the necessary sacrifices TODAY so I can live my dream. Thank you!!
I was wondering if both (or one) of you are retired with passive income? Or are you relying on savings and monetized on You Tube? (Ok, well maybe not monetized until you hit 100k). Also, I seemed to waste money trying an eSim that didn’t work (Holafly) or I shoulda just used What’s App. I tried getting local sim card in Nice, France and no one seemed to know what I was asking for there. My french skills are lacking🫤. I finally fell back on ATT international Day pass which is $12 per day on top of usual cell phone bill. Not cheap!
I love that you keep your videos real and targeted to the majority. I’ve followed other travelers who made it big in RUclips and then put out videos to the 1% rich and famous with focus on pent houses and expensive river cruises which are no longer relevant to me. I hope you do find that success but continue to produce videos for the majority of your viewers. Your videos are real, informative, helpful, and you both come across as relatable. Thank you for what you do!
Thank you so much for your comment! We're continuously evolving and finding our way here on RUclips. This fall, we'll be adding more destination videos to balance out our content, each with a clear purpose. Just like our previous destination videos, they'll cover costs, transportation, entertainment, and more. Stay tuned!
Totally agree with you!! People consider slow travel (from a cost perspective) the same as a regular vacation but on regular vacation you are still heating / cooling your house, paying your mortgage, making car payments etc. and those are some of the biggest expenses which are non existent in slow travel.
14:41 Great advice. Especially when it comes to every day life with or without traveling. My friends of more than 20 years that have made a lot more money than I they stop at Starbucks, buy new cars, they're thirsty and they stop at a convenience store and grab a bottle of water when they are 10 minutes from home. They've been doing that all their lives, and they wonder how I can afford a house in Hawaii with a view of the Pacific.. It's their habits of reoccurring costs. It all adds up that put me on a higher level than them. It's 7:15 in the morning here, crystal clear, and 75°F.
I think the tip about using public transportation from Day 1 of a visit is an excellent one. Learning to use public transportation is THE hardest thing for me when I go to a new location. One of the travel tips I do not see too often on RUclips channels is this one: Not all bus drivers are friendly.
Hey Brian and Carrie, listening to your video is now my Saturday activity, while i'm working from home. It's such a huge decision, but i can now see it is totally doable. Cheers! :D
Love all your advice! Can you let us know how you travel between cities, do you buy flights locally, google? Maybe a walk through on the planning process between a couple of cities. Thanks! ❤
When I was taking some of my German students overseas during the summer in the 80’s & 90’s, I took a small, spiral notebook with me, the ones that opened like a book. I put our plan for the day on the right, every expense for the day on the left. Receipts went into a pocket inside my shoulder bag. Sure came in handy when planning the next trip, but also for doing my taxes. When I was audited, they were shocked I had such detailed records. Evidently, others wing it. Not my style. Of course now, I would use my phone, but still reconcile each night before bed. 😊😊😊
I'm naturally a cheapskate and realizing how much I'm under budget has allowed me to enjoy a few more things. So monitoring your spend can also be freeing.
AMEN to travel day taxis! One thing that has really come clear to me since I embarked on my slow-travel phase is that though I love BEING places, I hate traveling to or from them, and I'm not going to lug my luggage on a bus or tram on an already hateful day.
I think it is important to note that values change when you are full time travelling versus a vacation. For a vacation with limited time and usually a long list of things to do, then spending money to save time makes sense. For full time travel, you can afford the time, so you add time but save money in the mode of travel (like bus or train rather than rent a car). Having said that I still see the value in the car for a place like Scotland where a drive through the Highlands and stopping where you choose is an awesome way to experience the sights. I would want to ensure that budget all the time doesn't take away from why you are in a place to begin with. It is a balance. Cheers to both.
This is a very good point you make, Robert. We have had recent discussions about this and plan to experience some of our destinations in a different way moving forward.
Awesome tips! I basically followed your philosophy of "slow travel" when I went to Barbados recently and I think we saved about 1k :) We stayed at an airbnb, instead of a full service hotel, we ate all our breakfast in the airbnb, we ate all our lunches at local restaurants/cafeterias and used public transportation for almost the entire time. We spent time at the supermarkets buying groceries, which was fun and was an activity that didn't cost any additional money. We did a few touristy things but also spent time talking to locals at bust stops, local bars, grocery stores, etc. Had we learned to use the public transportation from day 1, I think we would have saved another $40, so this is a great tip.
I spend a lot less on clothing bags and shoes these days - if I do need something I now use Vinted to source basic but nice quality makes that are familiar to me regarding sizing.
Appreciate you both. Your tips, insights on how to do the slow travel has been valuable. Haven’t started yet, looking at 2025, so the planning and preparation has been a great resource. As has the comments from your community. Keep them coming g because I’ll keep watching. Thank you!!

Hi Guys, I cannot fault any of your advice. You are spot on with your recommendations, and your advice will save people a lot of money. Using public transport is a big thing, and Americans will find it hard to grasp as they are so used to cars. | I watched your podcast midweek and felt AirBnB may be banned in Europe. It is not that cities are against tourism, but cruise ships, overcrowding, and short-term rentals via platforms like Airbnb have driven rental prices up by 86% in the last few years. If individual families rented out their properties to tourists, it would be alright, but huge companies have bought thousands of apartments to make vast amounts of money. If you are a Spaniard working in the hospitality sector, you cannot afford to rent somewhere to live near your place of work. Barcelona's actions are a continuing trend that may very well affect where people who travel full-time like yourselves can stay. I am looking forward to your new videos from Turkey!
This is one of the reasons that we will be using short term rental platforms as little as possible. We were only in Türkiye this time for some dental work so no video. Next week we will have another Budapest video.
I love your videos! Always super informative and Brian cracks me up. The hubs and I have been following you for a few years. My husband and I enjoy your videos. Thanks. My husband retired in June. Our first big trip is coming up. We are long time budget travelers. Since I am wheelchair bound we would love to know how accessible places are. Are the curbs sloped? How hilly is the area? Simple things. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching! We do talk about accessibility in our destination videos but can add more to that category moving forward! Thank you!!

We have been overseas for four years and never got a local SIM card. I use wifi in the accommodation I book and google maps offline when I am walking around. I receive mms as opposed to sms from my home country for codes to log in on banking, tax, etc. there have been a couple of times I wish I had coverage but otherwise I have been able to go by without a local SIM card.
Another solid video! Thank you! Wanted to mention your channel in my next video about slow travel. What is the social media etiquette on that? Would y'all mind?

Love your channel! The housesitter idea is great.I was wondering about the house-sitting, it sounds like pet sitting is sometimes part of it, but not all the time. I love dogs so that's not an issue, but cats are due to allergies. Does that matter much?
Housesitting is a great way to go. You can limit your search to leave out sits for cats if that is a issue. Here is the site we use and are really happy with: trustedhousesitters.pxf.io/c/3563316/1555723/18144
When you track your expenses do you do it in the countries currency then convert it to US dollars?. When I visit my daughter's in Ireland, usually for a month, I write down my whole budget and convert that amount into Euros then track my spending from that Euro amount. Sometimes the charges on my credit card may be more or less as the currency fluctuates.
Thank you. I'll be wearing short shorts and sticking my thumb out. I should be traveling for free all the time... I'm pretty sure. It worked for me in the '70s... No wait, I was picking up those in short shorts and tank tops in the '70s. Damn it.
Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand.. Love your channel and wanting to do the same (ie. build a successful youtube channel and travel) ; have made a start... Just curious, do you use a teleprompter when making your videos or do you just "wing it" ? excuse the pun.. cheers
We carry on with the Away larger carry-on, and each has a personal item. We like to roll through the airports. We have a packing video but will be doing an updated one this fall.
I fail every month at keeping accurate records. Do you have categories? Could you maybe share a pic? Sorry... I know that request sounds intrusive. Just wrapped up 2 months in Greece and North Macedonia where the Greek and Cyrillic alphabet made receipts useless to me. I'm sure I blew way past my budget. Love you guys!!!
In regards to the phone plans, do you keep a US phone number? If so, how? If not, do you have any issues with credit cards and banks in the US not having your number? Do you just give them a family member's number?
Hi Brian and Carrie: just found you as I am semi retired and wanting to travel. My big question is: when you say “go home” what does that mean? If you’re full time travellers, how do you keep a home address?
We go back to our hometown 2 to 3 times a year to visit family and friends. We will usually stay for 4 to 6 weeks. We either house sit or stay with family. We are happy that you found our channel!! 😁
@@BrianandCarrieI'm new to watching your channel. Thoroughly enjoying it! Found you somehow as I'm researching possibly moving to Spain from the United States. I'm trying to find if you have a video covering this question... I own a lot of things in my home even though it's just me LOL since you don't have a home to go back to the United States what did you do with all of your belongings? If you covered this can you attach the link? I'm thinking I have pictures and reel to reel from older relatives and Christmas decorations and tons of things that are memories that I don't want to get rid of at this point as a lot of family members have died. Thank you so much!
We sold almost everything, so we don't have much more than a couple of bags we leave at family members' houses. You can go to our video section on our home page and scroll to see all the videos that we have done. We have a few that may answer your questions.
An excellent video, Brian and Carrie! We are planning our return trip to Europe, and your videos are very helpful in this planning stage. Thank you. Dean & Cindy
Great quick starter video! I'm going to send this to some friends who think it's impossible to do this on a budget. I had a question about house sitting. I've read on a few sites online that it's hard to actually get a housesit gig because there are so many other people looking to do the same thing. Have you found this to be true? Mostly true? thanks and keep up the good work!
I’ve just recently joined a house/pet sitting site and within 2 weeks we’d got x7 confirmed sits between now and Jan 2025! We’re an English professional retired couple so it certainly depends on your profile.
Yes, we do. Its absolutely a must when traveling. This is the one we use and have been happy with: www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&merchant_id=d4bfb5df-f0c4-499b-bbb0-4734c69aa265&website_id=07ce4335-e112-4c0a-932c-33a2e51dc93e&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnordvpn.com
What I never understand is how to do this and what the permanent address is that's used for financial accounts and filing taxes? Where are you tax residents so you know which state to pay tax to?
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you! That makes sense. When I'd think about this for myself I always wondered how people solved having an address for financial accounts and tax residency without paying rent for an apartment or owning a home. I rent right now in the U.S. and have been realizing I might be able to be mobile.
Excellent video! A bit of an off topic comment but I was reading a couple of days ago a note in the CNN about the use of hidden cameras by unscrupulous Airbnb hosts and immediately thought about you guys. Seems like the problem is much bigger than what Airbnb would like to admit unfortunately (tens of thousands of incidents reported) Perhaps you can do some research about the topic and educate/warn your audience about this immoral practice but most importantly please protect yourself at all times! Cheers 🥂
I read the same and it has been very ugly discovery. I only stay in houses when I travel but if someone is recoding you it is horrible. How would you sweep for hidden devices?
I’m so sorry, you’ve probably answered this a hundred times. What source of income are you currently using to bridge the gap between accessing your retirement accounts? Is it a combination of RUclips and savings? Thank you!
I have enjoyed your videos but since launching No Borders, I find your content very repetitive. I don’t mean to be negative as I know there’s a lot of work that goes into these videos that is mutually beneficial for you, the creators and us the audience but I’m just being honest. I am very much looking forward to more videos seeing you guys travelling and enjoying the locations and showing us, the audience, all of these wonderful places.
Being slow travelers and staying in each place a month at a time isn't easy bringing new locations content each week. We will be moving through Mexico faster this fall and plan to balance out our content as much as possible. Thank you for sticking with us as we evolve! 😊 Cheers!!🍻

🤣 You should give it a try, David!!
Thank you for your videos 🤗😎
Thank you for watching!!! 😁❤️
Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand.. Love your channel and wanting to do the same (ie. build a successful youtube channel and travel) ; have made a start... Just curious, do you use a teleprompter when making your videos or do you just "wing it" ? excuse the pun.. cheers
We have talking points but mostly we just wing it. Good luck with the channel and have fun!!! 😁
Off topic, but do you guys use a carry-on or backpack, and why? How is your luggage working out for you?
We carry on with the Away larger carry-on, and each has a personal item. We like to roll through the airports. We have a packing video but will be doing an updated one this fall.
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you!
@@BrianandCarrieI'm an over packer. Can you put the link to the original video so I can watch that first? bless you! LOL
Here you go!! ruclips.net/video/Pqpncfr5FZ4/видео.html
what websites do you recommend to find remote work?
You may find this video we recently did helpful: ruclips.net/video/8RqHbZJlsT4/видео.html
Do you mind sharing how much you budget each month?
Here is a link to our cost-of-living playlist.

We just record each expense at the end of the day.
In regards to the phone plans, do you keep a US phone number? If so, how? If not, do you have any issues with credit cards and banks in the US not having your number? Do you just give them a family member's number?
We do have a local US number and we use Google voice which has worked great for any dual authentication. Cheers!!
@@BrianandCarrie Awesome thanks for the info. That's super smart.
@@BrianandCarrie I've been scrolling and couldn't find it. LOL. I'll look again. I wish there was a way to search by title. Thanks!
An excellent video, Brian and Carrie! We are planning our return trip to Europe, and your videos are very helpful in this planning stage. Thank you. Dean & Cindy
Thanks you two!! 😁
We have got a few recently without trouble. You just need to keep trying and it will happen. 😊
It’s kinda hard to figure out where the mum and pup eateries are especially when you’ve just landed. How do you find them
Just get out of the tourist areas and you'll find them. 😁
@@BrianandCarrie yes! I’m sure looking for social media groups would help too. Thank you
Do you guys use a VPN ?
We live in WA. State and use our parents' address when we come back. If we are not house sitting this is where we stay.
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you! That makes sense. When I'd think about this for myself I always wondered how people solved having an address for financial accounts and tax residency without paying rent for an apartment or owning a home. I rent right now in the U.S. and have been realizing I might be able to be mobile.
@@JamesClark Another option is to set up a nomad domicile or virtual address service like full time RVers do, usually in a tax free state.
What do you need for RUclips? Would love to know more …
We are currently using GoPro11 and a Canon M50 with DJI mics. Here is a video that we did last year.

Excellent video! A bit of an off topic comment but I was reading a couple of days ago a note in the CNN about the use of hidden cameras by unscrupulous Airbnb hosts and immediately thought about you guys. Seems like the problem is much bigger than what Airbnb would like to admit unfortunately (tens of thousands of incidents reported)
Perhaps you can do some research about the topic and educate/warn your audience about this immoral practice but most importantly please protect yourself at all times!
Cheers 🥂
I read the same and it has been very ugly discovery. I only stay in houses when I travel but if someone is recoding you it is horrible. How would you sweep for hidden devices?
@@LK-hy5jz There are videos on that. Partly about what to look for and partly about RF detection devices.
Thank you, Larry!!
I’m so sorry, you’ve probably answered this a hundred times. What source of income are you currently using to bridge the gap between accessing your retirement accounts? Is it a combination of RUclips and savings? Thank you!
Yes, savings and RUclips 😊
If your phone is locked e sims won’t work. Just for the community
Yes, that as well as other sims while traveling.
Cheers!!🍻
When we return home, we like to take time off and spend it with family and friends. We look forward to taking a vacation just like anyone else. With that said, last summer we did a video about our hometown. Why would we need to hide anything? Here is the link.
Cheers!! 🍻 ruclips.net/video/GJrOx8Cu57M/видео.html
These Side Hustles seem like so much work. I'd like to start or do a Side Hustle that involves doing absolutely nothing. 😂
@@BrianandCarrie Aaaah, did we lose the "miner"? I had a few great comments for him. Maybe for the best or you might have had to ban me. Did you guys get your "stuff' together? 🤦♂SMDH
Ha! We must have deleted his comments! 🤣 Yeah, we are doing our best to figure it out!
👍
Good Tips ! But the most important is, KEEP JESUS IN YOUR HEARTS, this life is only temporerly but he will guide and protect you while your TRAVEL + you get that peace inside
Great video! We're still too che...thrifty(!) to take a taxi, and we have suffered some long up the same dang hill 3x walks as a result.🙄 Even frustrations become fun memories after awhile!🩷
