    Gone are the day's of simply changing out a water pump or timing chain in a few hours by us shade tree mechanics. I have a 2012 F150 with the 3.5 L Ecoboost engine, looks like a nightmare. I'm glad I still own my 1976 F100 that I can tear down and rebuild blindfolded.

    WARNING!:If you are changing the timing chain due to the rattle in cold start you have to change also de main tensioner and the phasers cam and sprocket cause the rattle its originated because somehow the phasers do not keep the hidraulic pressure on the line and thats why the tensioner its not doing its job mantaining the pressure on the main chain,if you just change the chain and the tensioner in about 6 months or less your chain its gonna be stretch again,so with that being said change de tensioners the chains and the 4 phasers and your truck its gonna be running fine for ever with out the rattle noise in cold start

    Do the big number stampings on the sprockets mean anything? I don't mean the part numbers. They have a 1,2,or 3 stamped. I bought Melling sprockets and they are just motorcraft with the part numbers and fomoco ground off. My concern is I got an older design that will fail. Two are stamped 1, one 2, and one 3.

    U r a great and patient tech. Unbelievably complicated pile. I imagine that u r being hypnotized by what u r listening too. No other person would do that kind of back breaking work. I hope they pay u a lot of money. Chevy or Dodge get good power with one tenth the complication. Think Ford. Spark plug blowout not enough threads. Then spark plug break when removing. Then 4.0 rear cassette. Fun and games. Phasers galore. Then the Diesel issues for many many years. When u pull up to a Ford diesel truck, they always stink terrible from horrible pollution. They can’t put a key way in anything. Could anybody tell me the business model in these few examples? Does Ford want to go out of business? Ever work on a Chevy? Or a Tundra? Or a Dodge? Where is this engineering coming from?

    I've been into hundreds of these now myself. Here are my thoughts. There is too much slack in those cam holding tools to be of any use. I don't even bother using them anymore. The timing marks on this engine are not difficult to align, in my opinion. Was this job retail or warranty? I would have sold a set of plugs and COP boots to go along with it at 30:57. Thank you for reminding me of the updated timing chain tensioner. I will now sell one with every set I replace. On 2011/12 trucks, now would be the best time to replace that dreaded vacuum pump too.

    Is the chain and tensioner an issue on Fords engines, and if so: why what's their weak points?
    How long (mileage) are they intended to last?
    Is the tensioner spring operated or hydraulic, or combo?

  • @worldbestsoldiers

    May I ask, but why do you always remove the cab to do stuff like this? I can understand if its a diesel, but I for one work on Gas Engines and never see a reason to pull a cab to timing chains or motor pulls. Unless its a smaller car or SUV, I just pull the subframe with the engine. But on trucks, I've not seen much issues pulling them from top of the hood or working with the cab on. Is it easy to pull cabs on these trucks? I feel like its more of a hassle than what the job already is,

    • @flmmaz
      @flmmaz  6 лет назад +2

      First and foremost it's a matter of preference. I personally do not like crawling around the engine compartment. That, coupled with the fact that I can have an F-150 cab off and back on in an hour and a half, makes it worth while.

    Is that a water pump I see connected to the timing chain? What genius put it there? In the perfect place to leak antifreeze down into the engine oil pan and destroy the engine. Make no sense st all. Destroys the engine if not caught in time. Extremely expensive to replace. Takes less then 30 minutes to replace a water pump attached to the serpentine belt and the engine won’t be destroyed if the bushing wears and leaks like they all do. All I can say is what knot head came up with this design??!!

      That is sure the truth.
      I had ford repair this 2X on my truck when it was tsb15-0131, first at 15K miles, again at 40K and now they are screwing me (they diagnosed it again, no surprise) and it is now tsb16-0027 with even more parts. $3200 to fix it, even though this is their 3rd try. Ford corporate denied it, and the dealer wont cover any. . .
      What erks me to no end, despite them trying to fix it twice already, it says it is covered under emissions repair at 80K (I am at 79.5) but same thing.
      Any tips on this one? Otherwise, I am running it until I see chunks of plastic in my oil pan...
      Great video! Shame I cant do this all at home, though with enough time, I could probably come close.

    • @rougen512
      @rougen512 6 лет назад +1

      It is my understanding that the prior TSBs to 16-0027 did not address the problem in its entirety. If you had it fixed twice before I would suspect that the first time they simply replaced the chain (1st TSB), then the second time they replaced the chain again and whichever phasers showed damage (2nd TSB). 16-0027 replaces the chain and all four phasers. I have yet to hear of anyone who successfully had all four phasers and timing chain replaced have the issue come back. There were some individuals who were lucky enough to deal with good dealerships and had more effective TSB work done even with the previous TSBs. You have to be able to appreciate that there are enough trucks on the road that some of them had the 1st TSB for ecoboost rattle and it fixed their problem and it never came back. A million shades of grade. It has a LOT to do with quality of your dealership and your attitude as a consumer. If you go in there making demands and repeatedly stating your dissatisfaction you're likely to not get very good service. At the end of the day though it is upsetting for all of us. I have a '12 that rattles occasionally and it really sucks.

      My stepdad has a 2013 ecoboost with 190,000 miles on it and the motor has never been touched. I think using good synthetic oil and changing it every 5000 miles goes a long way.

      Same here, I just called Ford dealer and he says no way its timing chain.. that doesn't happen until 200,000 miles, without asking what year or what motor.

      The water pump on these are cheap, it bolts externally to the cover.

    • @greasemonkeybd
      @greasemonkeybd 5 лет назад

      @@flmmaz all these ford V-6's have the pump hooked to the chain like the 3.5, 3.7 front wheel drive and like the old chrysler 2.7 V-6 none of these will be cheap to change the water pump. not a good design I think. to change this pump retail would be several hours labor and much more in a front wheel drive.

    • @flmmaz
      @flmmaz  5 лет назад

      Negative on that. This is a rear wheel drive unit and the water pump bolts to the outside of the cover. It is very easy to get to and can be replaced in under an hour.

      Mike Gonzales
      He takes the cab off simply to make more money. That way he can charge for the time to r/r the cab, evac/recharge the a/c and such. If he did it for his own convenience then there wouldn't be a charge to remove the cab. Surely, he didn't do it for free. Plus, he is still leaning at a much more awkward position imo. Ford doesn't require the cab to be removed. Pros do the same job all the time without removing it. Quite overdramatic too about "pulling the pin" on the tensioner. Everything is marked from Ford for this very reason. If they line up it's good. I have a feeling this guy is not always honest with his customers or he likes to overcomplicate and dramatize the job.

    ford should have kept the 4.6 and 5.4 SOC and just improve them not this crap. how can greasemonkeys make money on this kind of warranty work?

  • @prevost8686

    I was raised up in a Ford household but screw the direction Ford has taken with their power plants. They can keep their forced induction lawnmower engines. I don’t even like Chevy but my 5.3LS pushrod V8 has 250,000 and the valve covers have never been off of it. Ford forced me to buy a Chevy with their ridiculously over complicated engines. Sad really.

    • @joshuachilders129
      @joshuachilders129 5 лет назад

      Easy there. Is that why GM is going DOHC with the Corvette? Is that why they are also including Aluminum into the bodies of their trucks? Is that why they too are using 4cl turbo engines in their full size trucks now? A pushrod engine has a more complex valve train than an ohc engine, actually.

      @@joshuachilders129 A well engineered DOHC is unstoppable. Ok, the 32V Ford DOHCS, I have one in a 95 continental. 200K miles, runs like new. It actually has two timing chains. I used to be on forums and engine work was unheard of. Was used in the Cobra and Mark 8 too.
      Obviously cost wasn't an issue for that motor. Lexus 3.5L V6 are also bulletproof. Ford stole the dual injector technology from the Lexus Version.
      This engine is a piece of shit designed by accountants.
