For the longest time I've wanted to make my own jewelry. These videos have been really helpful. You're an amazing teacher. Thankyou so much ... just made my first order from your website 🥰
Am glad to find your new video. I've gained a lot of helpful how to information from your videos, thank you. I can't wait till I am able to finally place an order.
i would love to purchase this kit however i can not find it anywhere on your shop. cant find the exact heat tool. I do enjoy your videos and would love to do this but with your tools .
Thank you for your question and for your comments. The kit is listed under Jewelry Making Kits / Soldering Kits. The heat gun is included in the kit and can be found at: www.jansjewels.com/Soldering-Starter-Kit-1-4-LG-Pendants_p_47835.html
Hi Dolly Angel. In this video we are using silver plated brass settings, low temperature solder and a heat gun to avoid sending the final piece out for plating. Please check out our earlier videos where I am using raw brass settings. ruclips.net/user/Jansjewelsvideos
If I was looking for this type of crystal with settings on ebay, what would I put in the search bar? All that seems to come up are the sew on type settings.
Hi Psisky. I checked ebay and had the same problem. We sell the settings. Please see www.jansjewels.com/chinese-rhinestone-settings-for-jewelry-making.html
All the solder has a silver luster and would be very visible with gold plated settings. When I want to do a gold design, I use brass settings with the stones set, 450 degree prefluxed acid core solder and a torch. I then send the finished design out to be gold plated.
Hi AJ. The melting point of the solder does not affect the strength of the solder bond. In other words 700 degree solder is not twice as strong as 300 degree melting point solder. They both have the same solder bond.
Hi! Thanks for uploading these useful videos! I have a few enamel earrings that I want to convert them into clip-on earrings, would this kit ( heat gun and the solder you used ) work for that too ? Or would you suggest torch ?
Hi Helen. The soldering paste has the same 300 degree melting point as the solder wire. The soldering paste will make it easier to attach the clip on earring findings. Apply the paste and position the clip on finding before you apply the heat.
Jan's Jewelry Supplies Thank you for your answer ! Last question before I make an order, would lead-free soft silver solder work with heat gun as well ? I was recommended to use lead free solder.
Hi Helen. The lead free solder has a higher melting point and does not work well with a heat gun. You will increase the chance of damaging the enameled earring. The small amount of solder paste you will be using will not come in contact with the skin.
Hi Jessica. We sell the rhinestones at Jan's Jewelry Supplies www.jansjewels.com/chinese-crystal-rhinestones-1.html We also sell the featured kit www.jansjewels.com/jewelry-making-kits-for-soldering.html
Hi Jac kie. We are not aware of any books on this topic. Everything you see in all the soldering videos are things we learned by trial and error over many years of soldering jewelry. You may find this page helpful www.jansjewels.com/how-to-solder.html
Hi Laura. Thank you for the question and your comments. Yes, copper will solder the same as brass. Aluminum is the most common metal that cannot be soldered.
Hi Laura. The settings do not need to be plated. Plating is done with "silver". I do not know what other metal would be used to give the appearance of silver plating.
Hi Laura. I have not worked with rhodium plated setting but I do not see why they would not be able to be soldered. The whole idea of using silver plated settings with the heat gun is to avoid having to silver plate the finished piece.
I tried many times even i use flux but not sure why it never really attach those rhinestones strongly. Do you think different kind of stell material could affect this? Thank you
Hi Meliana. Please make sure you are heating the metal findings hot enough to melt the solder. A common error is to apply the heat to the solder instead of the findings. Aluminum cannot be soldered. Hope this helps you get started.
Hi Stephen. The solder wire is prefluxed acid core solder with a melting temperature of 300 degrees. It is available at Jan's Jewelry Supplies: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html
The red base is a children's non-hardening playdough. You can find it in the toy section of most stores. You can also do a Google search for "playdough recipe". The brand name is Play-Doh.
Hello! Thank you for your videos. I accidentally purchased sew in rhinestones. Would I be able to solder those together? They are on silver colored settings.
None of the pendants in this video will need to be plated. The whole idea of using silver plated brass settings, 300 degree solder and the heat gun is to eliminate the need for plating the finished piece. I hesitate to recommend a particular jewelry plating service for finished jewelry since there are issues with the ones we have used.
I did what you did and I can't get it to solder. Us the metal pieces stainless steel? The one I bought is stainless steel 🤦🏿♀️. It's a stubborn piece to solder
I would like to help. However, you have not given me enough information to work with. Can you provide me with more information and i will see if i can help.
Hi Jackee. Jan's Jewelry Supplies sells all the items seen in the videos including the Jewelry Soldering Kits. www.jansjewels.com/jewelry-making-kits-for-soldering.html The settings are at www.jansjewels.com/chinese-rhinestone-settings-for-jewelry-making.html The rhinestones are at www.jansjewels.com/chinese-crystal-rhinestones-1.html

Hi Amjed. The heat gun is included in Jewelry Starter Kits 1, 2 and 3 located at www.jansjewels.com/jewelry-making-kits-for-soldering.html You can also find the heat gun and solder at www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html
Yes. I can see no reason you should not be able to solder to silver wire. If the wire is actually aluminum and not silver, you will not be able to solder to it. You cannot solder aluminum.
Hi Michael. Thank you for your question and for watching the videos. Yes, we sell everything seen in the videos including the solder, tools, rhinestones, settings and soldering kits. The solder and tools are found at: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html and the soldering kits at: www.jansjewels.com/jewelry-making-kits-for-soldering.html We do not sell the ceramic tile or the PlayDoh.
Hi EwiPoland. Yes. The stones must be glass and not acrylic stones. You will not find gold colored solder. The solder I use is prefluxed acid core solder wire with a melting temperature of 300 degrees. You can find the solder at: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html
Jan's Jewelry Supplies ok ,stop me if I'm wrong your solder cable is tin ..? because in truth to solder silver and gold we do not use tin we use a silver solder or a gold solder with a certain percentage of gold and silver in the solder. tin solder is for brass and copper
You are correct. The prefluxed acid core solder is not used for making gold or silver jewelry. We use this solder for soldering brass settings and silver plated brass settings.
Hi Crystal. The thickness of the solder wire will vary but that is generally not important to most people. What is important is that the solder wire is prefluxed acid core solder with a melting temperature of 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The 300* solder wire is about .75mm thick. This is generally used with plated settings.

I love your channel! I hope you don’t mind answering questions. How would I solder a rhinestone chaine to a metal headband?
Hi Ciara, You would have to lay down the solder, put the chain in place an reheat the solder. You could also use the solder paste.
Jan

Hi, for gold plated Swarovski settings which solder would be best?
All the solder has a silver luster and would be very visible with gold plated settings. When I want to do a gold design, I use brass settings with the stones set, 450 degree prefluxed acid core solder and a torch. I then send the finished design out to be gold plated.
Thank you Jan for the quick reply!
Is that solder strong? I understand the benefit of not having to plate the settings after soldering but is it strong?
Hi AJ. The melting point of the solder does not affect the strength of the solder bond. In other words 700 degree solder is not twice as strong as 300 degree melting point solder. They both have the same solder bond.
Can you send me link Where I can buy this wire type 😊

Hi! Thanks for uploading these useful videos! I have a few enamel earrings that I want to convert them into clip-on earrings, would this kit ( heat gun and the solder you used ) work for that too ? Or would you suggest torch ?
Hi Helen, I would use the heat gun. The temperature will be lower and you will be less likely to damage the earrings.
Jan
Jan's Jewelry Supplies hi thanks for the reply ! Also would soldering paste work with heat gun ? Or it has to be the wire ?
Hi Helen. The soldering paste has the same 300 degree melting point as the solder wire. The soldering paste will make it easier to attach the clip on earring findings. Apply the paste and position the clip on finding before you apply the heat.

Hi Jan, is it possible to solder with claws that have a copper base instead of a brass base? Love you videos! ♥
Hi Laura. Thank you for the question and your comments. Yes, copper will solder the same as brass. Aluminum is the most common metal that cannot be soldered.
Thank you for the reply! I also want to ask: do the claws have to be plated with real silver?
Hi Laura. The settings do not need to be plated. Plating is done with "silver". I do not know what other metal would be used to give the appearance of silver plating.

What type of solder wire do u use todo this?
Hi Stephen. The solder wire is prefluxed acid core solder with a melting temperature of 300 degrees. It is available at Jan's Jewelry Supplies: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html
Hi Jan,
My heat gun is 392F. Is that too high for soldering this kind of cupped rhinestone jewelry with the 300F flux from your site? Thanks!
Hi Aurora. Your heat gun should work just fine. You only want to heat the settings enough to melt the solder.
What is that red base?
The red base is a children's non-hardening playdough. You can find it in the toy section of most stores. You can also do a Google search for "playdough recipe". The brand name is Play-Doh.
Hello! Thank you for your videos. I accidentally purchased sew in rhinestones. Would I be able to solder those together? They are on silver colored settings.
Yes, you can use the sew on rhinestone settings for soldering as long as the settings are not aluminum.
Jan's Jewelry Supplies thank you. I appreciate it ♥️
What places do you send finished jewelry to be plated? What would I search for?
None of the pendants in this video will need to be plated. The whole idea of using silver plated brass settings, 300 degree solder and the heat gun is to eliminate the need for plating the finished piece. I hesitate to recommend a particular jewelry plating service for finished jewelry since there are issues with the ones we have used.
Recommended for unplated brass settings is Tri-Jay or Accent Plating in Rhode Island.

I would like to help. However, you have not given me enough information to work with. Can you provide me with more information and i will see if i can help.
The metal back I bought from Amazon, It's stainless steel. I used handy flux and solder with rosin core in it. It wouldn't solder it just balls up.
If the settings are stainless steel then my best guess is that your solder melts at a higher temperature that your heat source can supply.
Jan
The solder melts at 475°
Where can you purchase the silver plates and rhinestones?

do I understand correctly using heat gun I can "solder" Silver our gold plated settings with stone?
Hi EwiPoland. Yes. The stones must be glass and not acrylic stones. You will not find gold colored solder. The solder I use is prefluxed acid core solder wire with a melting temperature of 300 degrees. You can find the solder at: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html
Ok If I usse this solder wire ,is not allergic ?
I have not heard of any solder causing an allergic reaction.
Jan's Jewelry Supplies ok ,stop me if I'm wrong your solder cable is tin ..? because in truth to solder silver and gold we do not use tin we use a silver solder or a gold solder with a certain percentage of gold and silver in the solder. tin solder is for brass and copper
