The song is about how people are unfairly judged when they lose their life because of a drug addiction or because of suicide. "I cry when angels deserve to die" is basically saying it makes him sad when good people die because of their unfortunate circumstances. "grab a brush and put a little makeup, hide the scars to fade away the shakeup, whyd you leave the keys up on the table" essintially saying people put on "makeup" to hide their pain to avoid judgement, and that if your going to commit suicide you wont need your keys to get back in the house. Really deep song here by system of a down, but most people dont realize it because of how intense the song is.

Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'I cry when Angels deserve to die.'"

I knew it was about suicide and how people Talk about people who commited suicide (there was a possibility this whole song was about Kurt Kobain).
The title Chop Suey is just a Chinese dish and seemed to have no sense, but because the first title of the song was "suicide" but the Label told them to change the title.
Chop Suey is like "Suicide" chopped in half.

That makes sense. I’m glad I read this bc I like the song more now. I wasn’t huge into SOAD back in the day and kinda thought the lyrics were just trying to be edgy. But I’ve since found out more about the band and it’s members and seen how thoughtful Serj is, but I never came back to revaluate the lyrics. But I really like the lyrics now, the idea that some lives are considered less important bc of a psychological and medical condition like drug addiction is something I’m passionate about. So I kinda love that a song with such amazing vocals and interesting change ups (and awesome drums, they’re so good) is also actually talking about something. That’s cool. Appreciate the insight.

With SOAD you always need to look for and understand the meaning of their songs. Almost all of them have meaning. This song is taken differently among fans but according the the band itself the song is about suicide and was originally titled suicide but was forced to change it's title before the song released. Their music is deep and on another level. Your next song by them should be B.Y.O.B or Aerials

My take on it when they say angels they are talking about good hearted people including children with no say and why do they deserve to die.
He doesn't say why cry, he says I cry and the song is a reference to god and how can he forsaken people he claims to love.
But again that is my take on the song!
Here are the lyrics and I hope this adds more perspective. Enjoy~ :]
    I don't think you trust
    In... My... Self-righteous suicide
I... Cry... When angels deserve to die
    In, my, Self-righteous suicide
I, cry, when angels deserve to die
    Father (father)
    Father (father)
    Father (father)
    Father (father)
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit
    Father, into your hands
    Why have you forsaken me?
    In your eyes forsaken me
    In your thoughts forsaken me
In your heart forsaken me - Chop Suey

A lot of people have what the song is about basically true. The song was originally supposed to be called suicide but their label didn’t think it would be good. So they called it that. Also the song is about Jesus in a way and can relate to it. Self-righteous suicide meaning he knew he was sent to die for us. Hints the Bible verses in the song. If you read how they got those lyrics it’s pretty cool.

When Surge sings "When angels deserve to die " they mean fallen angels. S.O.A.D is deep political rock. They are from Armenia. A heavily oppressed Country who was victim to political and religious genocide. VERY DEEP. You should listen to their song "Ariels". Loved your reactions to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"There's a lot going on in this song, both musically and lyrically. It touches on drug addiction, but doesn't have the somber tone that many songs about addiction have. The song can also be interpreted to be about how society views death or about Christ. Peace guys

The part about “father in to your hands, I commit my spirit” comes from the Bible - Luke 23:46 when Jesus calls out his last words before dying on the cross to God. Interesting tidbit, they were at an impasse with figuring out that part of the song so they went to Rick Rubin’s house - producer of all good things - and he told Serj (lead singer) to grab a book off the shelf and open to a page and read it to come up with his bridge/chorus. He opened to that part of a bible and the rest is history.

There is no getting around it, and you guys are at the top in my opinion. You guys were very affected by Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. So, maybe at the end of a video, mention a song from a different genre that hits home to you at the same emotional level, and try to introduce it to people who may have never heard it. When you open your ears to someone else's music, they open their ears to yours.
