if i may jump in here? the different colors are just a preference of that particular car owners/company choice. but the colored A end of the car does signify it's a rotary coupler for those at the power plants @John D

Darryl, do you happen to know the reason for the different-colored ends on coal cars? Different coal clients? I've always wondered.
No John I don't know the reason for them but they all serve the same purpose to get unloaded at the same power plant I believe.
