glad i saw this comment before pulling out my credit card. i was very interested, but maybe I'll just get the Ignatius NT study Bible instead. my first Bible was the NRSV-CE. bought it because I was ignorant and didn't realize there were so many different English translations. i thought it was basically like Protestant translations vs Catholic translations, so my only focus was making sure it was a Bible that said "Catholic Edition" on it. I really don't like the NRSV translations and much prefer RSV or ESV. NRSV feels super clunky to me and can make passages seem more confusing than they needed to be. I realized how bad my translation was when I started listening to the Bible in a Year podcast where Fr. Mike is reading the RSV-CE which was much better than my Bible.
Hey, I just found your channel and loved this and your “3 Bibles” video. I’m looking to dive deeper into my faith and looking for a the best translation/Bible to get. Love the soft leather and quality look of this Bible you’re reviewing but want the whole Bible in it. A friend said if you don’t read the dovay-rheims that it doesn’t count and I’m confused. Please help!
Hey brother! Welcome to the channel! The Douay-Rheims translation is the one straight from the Latin Vulgate, which is why a lot of traditional Catholics love it. And traditional Catholics can be pretty exclusive in their reliance on/love for Latin. 🤣 But don't be discouraged--as long as you are diving into Sacred Scripture, that's what matters! The NAB and NABRE are great beginner translations (especially because the NAB is what we hear at Mass!) and the RSV2CE is great for study because it is translated not from the Latin but from the original Hebrew and Greek. The DR is still great too, but certainly not the only legit translation worth your time, study, and prayer with. I hope that helps? It's just awesome you're diving into God's Word! 😊
My only problem with this Bible is the translation. I don't really like the NRSV with it's inclusive language. I would have loved it more if they used the RSV-2CE or the DOUAY RHEIMS translations for a Bible this nice. Oh, well.
Totally hear you there--I like the RSV-2CE a lot myself. To be honest as I'm making my way through Matthew's Gospel right now I haven't come across any issues with the inclusive language...maybe that's just because I'm not specifically looking for it, but overall the reading experience has been one of my favorites. More updates to come in the review, though!
We don't have any issue with Bishop Barron. Even if you do, this Bible has a lot of commentaries from ancient Church fathers, but we'll talk more about that in our review eventually. We're not theologians, so we'll leave conversations about Bishop Barron's theological and philosophical leanings to people who are way smarter than us. :)

Anything that has to do with or has backing by Bishop Barron or I wouldn't trust.
