We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word-SHAZAM!-this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart-inside a ripped, godlike body-Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

Love this movie. I remember watching it in the theater with my three kids, all are adopted. Everyone absolutely loved Billy, Freddie, and especially Darla.

First I thought you meant everyone loved it and start naming off your kids and I thought they had the same name😭😭😭
Being adopted and a foster kid myself, I love the themes of this movie. And Levi is great as Shazam. And the kids were great too
I think this movie did well is showing the hard truth that having a blood family isn't going to guarantee you a happy life. I love the dynamics of how both Billy and Sivana had a parent who didn't believe they shouldn't shower their child with love, and they responded to their tragedy in different ways. There's also the contrast between Billy's foster parents and his mother and her boyfriend.
Billy's not unworthy my man.There's a big difference between being law abiding, and being pure of heart.
"I've got super-powers! I'm going to go buy beer, steal money from an ATM, and go to a strip club!"
Pure of heart? If that's all the purity of heart it takes, it shouldn't have taken the wizard more than a day to find a champion.
@@PhilBagels Purity of heart means you're not going to Use the powers for evil, Billy is just that. he may do petty shit that a lot of kids dealing with trauma do, he is over all a good person and it shines through when he gets the powers.

@@katielee7364 Not the least little bit. He uses his powers to steal money from an ATM! What part of that is "not evil"? And then to go to a strip club! What part of that is "not for his own gain"? Then he shoots lightning from his hands to entertain a crowd of people for money. Are you talking about some completely different movie?
Solomon's wisdom - Great insight and encyclopedic knowledge.
Heracles' strength - Superhuman strength and durability.
Atlas' stamina - Superhuman stamina and endurance.
Zeus' power - Lightning manipulation, regeneration and magical affinity.
Achilles' courage - Indomitable willpower.
Mercury's speed - Superhuman speed, reflexes and flight.
Although he doesn't seem to gain all that much of Solomon's wisdom.
@@PhilBagels He has it, he just hasn't figured out how to use it yet. Just like it took him a while to figure out Mercury's speed and flight. I think Solomon's wisdom is hardest for him to utilize because he's still just a 15 year old. But he did use some wisdom by the end of the movie. Such as figuring out how to defeat Sivana and most importantly, figured out that family love is more important than family blood. It's a little corny, I know, but still.

In the comic books Mary is known as Mary Marvel and she's the twin sister of Billy. Here they made her an older adopted sister. She first appeared in comics in 1942!
Ugh, when Jane was upset about Billy's mom abandoning him as a child, you can really feel and see her anger, she couldnt even focus on the movie for a bit... she's definitely a loving mom. It was like she wanted to reach though the screen and slap that woman...
I love how consistently genuine and empathetic she is in all of their reactions, you can tell that shes a kind woman, as is Justin!
I think a lot of parents would have a hard time trying to stomach that scene.
People also should slap Shazam (the wizard).
I remember when Superman found out about it, and he got pissed off at the Wizard.
To explain to JV, Wisdom doesn't equal genius intelligence. Wisdom is experience while genius is logical retention (knowledge gathering)
Zachary Levi is the PERFECT Shazam. In real life he says he a mega nerd and geek. He loves comics, games....etc.
The phrase "pure of heart" is used a little differently in the Shazam universe(including the comics). It's established in all continuities that Billy isn't the nicest kid, but he does have goodness in him. However, that's not the only criteria for the mantle.
You see, Shazam has many titles, including Champion of Magic, and Guardian of The Rock( the center of all magic and basically the cave he was taken to). It's not enough for him to be a good person. He also needs to be able to handle the workload that comes with being Champion. Essentially, he's a sort of ambassador/leader for magicians and magical creatures. Sworn to protect them and maintain balance so the magic and regular worlds don't collide in an unseemly way. That's also why there are doors to other dimensions in the Rock. Makes it easier for Magic's Champion to get from place to place.
Not to mention that he's the avatar for ancient gods and beings. It's all more explored in the comics than it is in the live action/animated movies, sadly.
Basically, Billy is a BIG DEAL and was rightly chosen. He may not be pure of heart according to other interpretations, but he is exactly what the gods and magical beings of the world needed.
This version of Shazam was based upon the New 52 version of the DC universe. In that reality, the wizard had been searching for someone worthy for years, without success. He was getting weaker and soon wouldn't be able to keep the Seven Deadly Sins imprisoned. Sivana said there wasn't anyone truly pure of heart in today's world and the wizard feared this might be true. That's why he cast the spell to summon so many people- he was desperate. In the end he was willing to accept someone who wasn't necessarily champion material yet, but who had the potential to become one. He chose Billy Batson because underneath the smartass, aloof, selfish and semi-delinquent exterior he had a good heart and would always help those in need. And the more Billy embraced heroic values and believed in himself, the more of his potential power he would tap.
This movie did a great job with its humorous tone and theme of family. And Darla was just... Darla ;)
Remember, in the comics Billy is usually 10 when he gets the power of SHAZAM
23:47 Yup and arranged in the right order the first letters of those names spell SHAZAM!!!! As to whether or not Billy got lucky, he proved his humility by saying he wasn't a good pure person. In the comic version of the origin, where he had a rougher edge to him, he said he's tried to be good but the world just keeps beating him down. That encouraged the Wizard to look for "the embers of good" in his test and that earned Billy his powers. The best people to carry power are those that don't seek it.

they all have the same powers but the strength of their power is divided among them so they are not as strong as Zach was before he split his power. They all just excel at specific abilities because they favor them.
I know that you guys talked about being scared of your daughters getting lost in public, but I know you don't have to worry about what happened to Billy happening to your girls. If they got lost and the police found them, I know you'd come get them. 😊
Also, I hope you do consider becoming foster parents in the future. I don't know if it's the same in Canada, but in the US, there are so few good foster homes.

In the comic books Freddie Freeman is known as Captain Marvel Jr, and unlike the others he stays a teenager when he transforms. Also he changes by saying "Captain Marvel" instead of "Shazam."
Shazam the character is fun... it seems sometimes its just Billy, then in like in one of the animated movies, maybe Flashpoint(?), it seems all the kids together combined to form Shazam, a little Voltron action I guess... Was one good Young Justice episode featured him where the kid wizard cast a spell that separated the world into two parts, one full of kids, the other full of adults. And since Shazam is both he was able to travel both and coordinate stuff.
The old guy actor at the beginning plays Lex Luthor's dad on Smallville! Very good actor!

I feel this movie is kinda underrated. I really enjoyed this movie. Such a fun entry to the DCEU overall. It’s the family-film of the franchise, with great action and jokes. While I am somewhat bummed the DCEU isn’t continuing (tho I feel overall, it’s the best move going forward), I am at least happy that we get to revisit this set of characters with the second movie soon.

This Superman scene is the biggest example of the disappointment of the DCEU. There have been so many missed opportunities in this universe, and not being able to see Henry Cavil’s face in that end scene was so frustrating. If the DCEU had the continuity of the MCU, we’d be looking at it a lot differently. What a shame.
They asked Henry to do the end cameo for Shazam 2019 but he refused so they have someone else doing the Superman cameo without showing the face

In the comics, Mary - or rather Mary Marvel - had her own set of abilities based upon female Goddeses whose first letters of their names formed the word Shazam. Personally I thought that was a little chauvanistic but it was the politics of the time.
Watch birds of prey, it is an amazing movie, i am sure you guys will love it
naw completely comfortable keeping this a one shot. Liked this quite a bit more than about half the MCU and this isn't even connected to anything. It's light-hearted with being satisfying.

I'm actually happy they're starting over. WB kept rushing to do what Marvel did without taking the time to build it. For instance, BvS rushed through enough content for 3 movies to set up Justice League. I also don't enjoy Snyder's vision. Too dark and always the exact same feel for everything, most of which removed almost everything I loved about the characters. Especially his Superman. DC movies didn't get good for me until other directors started making movies that branched out. Wonder Woman and Shazam are the direction they should have been going from the beginning. I think they could have course corrected but they kept kind of waffling. I'm looking forward to finding out what Gunn can do.
I absolutely hate silly comedy movies in Superhero movie. I can't stand at all. It dilutes the serious situation. It invalidates the danger after that it doesn't matter much. Snyder's movies are Infinity times better than MCU, just giving you a taste that your opinion is a niche.n

I remember the first time I watched I thought all along that Freddie was like a young Adam Brody he gave the exact (!!!) same energy, then in the end they actually brought Afam ad Freddie and my brain exploded 😂😂😂 I scream j felt so cool for getting that 😂

I think this is my favorite DC movie. Zachary Levi played a big kid so well. I suggest watching him in American Underdog, the Kurt Warner story.
FYI: Cavil wasn't in this movie because DC/Warner Bros. wanted him in a cameo role to show the bad guy beat him up to make Shazam's victory that much sweeter. Cavil agreed, but wanted top money. DC only wanted to pay him minimum wage. So the deal fell through. That is the nutshell version and there's obviously much more going on behind-the-scenes, but it was things like this that make me happy that Gunn is going to try to make things work across the DC universe.
