Lesser opportunities for female surgical training has been raised as an issue by the ABC`s Health Report programme in Australia in the past. It was the case in the past that maternity leave could be a death sentence for a training programme. Another specific problem was a few cases of female surgeons being blocked from public hospital appointments by a more senior colleague who was refused. This led to a much lower level of private work. Thanks for raising the topic of possible gender differences in surgery.

I’ve had more female than male registrars in the last 5 years as a consultant. They’ve all been excellent and on course to make great consultants, and I don’t know why your colleague would ever say what he said.
