According to Einstein’s theory of relativity the closer you go to the speed of light the slower time passes for you. So you experience a year but everyone on earth experiences 50 years. That’s why the guy said “Einstein was right” and the other guy joked that “Einstein was probably one of them”.
The James Webb is making scientists rethink the Einstein Theories - that they might be way off. That telescope is finding objects that scientists were not expecting to find. Many are now considering forms of space and time that were once not considered. That telescope gave some answers but opened up way more for review.
I'm a huge Francois Truffaut fan, and despite being an iconic director, he's a solid actor and he's absolutely wonderful in this film as Lacombe ❤
I first saw this movie in 1977 at a drive in theater. It was late summer and not a cloud in the sky. I was Barry’s age, 6. They had a playground setup for kids near the screen. I played there until dark when the movie started. After the small UFO’s appeared on screen I started looking at the sky for lights that moved. My parents got annoyed after awhile because I kept asking “Did that star just move? Did that one?”

Pilots who have seen weird things sometimes don’t report them in fear of looking crazy or unstable, especially if it’s suspected that they may be hallucinating. That’s what that scene of the operator talking the pilots was conveying, but also could be the tone of the dispatch operator asking them if they wanted to report a UFO, could be interpreted as “don’t report it” by the way he emphasized “UFO”. But yeah, it’s a real thing sometimes, it’s almost always natural phenomena though and nothing “alien” like.
Same year as Star Wars. I was 3 years old. I've watched this movie so many times. So many good scenes. This movie solidified Spielberg's reputation of brilliance after Jaws.

I was 17 or 18 when this and Star Wars were released. Both had a HUGE impact on pop culture and movie making. Star Wars was described as Science Fiction and this as Science Reality.” 🙄

I think of this as a First Contact with a galactic civilization. That maybe collecting humans was a way to plot our evolution, and then...we were ready.
16:27 - The part about the screws on the vent plate unscrewing themselves - that comes from real investigator reports of paranormal things happening (during UFO activity) that normally are associated with ghost /demonic hauntings or poltergeist investigations. The French investigator in this movie "Lancome" - his character was inspired by real life French UFO investigator and author of lots of books on the subject - "Jaques Vallee' - who also noticed a strong similarity between UFO abduction cases and poltergeist /demonic activity. That put him in hot water with the regular UFO investigators - who didn't want their professional reputations in their field associated with spooky ghost lore.

Btw... Spielberg had said at the time of making E.T. that, when he made Close Encounters, he wasn't a parent yet, and seeing himself as the Dreyfuss character. He was single, care-free and had no hesitation of wanting to see inside the ship and go away on adventures with the aliens. When it came time for E.T. he already had kids and said there was no way he was letting Elliot get on that ship. When they say an artist puts something of themselves in their work, there you go. And then when he made his 3rd aliens from outer space flick, it was the next step that he embued into the film; and that of the moment when a parent has to realize they have to let go of their child and let them take the reigns at being an adult for themselves.
That is some really cool and profound insight from Spielberg.

1. Close Encounters of the First Kind: Visual sightings of an unidentified flying object, seemingly less than 500 feet away, that show an appreciable angular extension and considerable detail.
2. Close Encounters of the Second Kind: An event in which a physical effect is alleged; this can be interference in the functioning of a vehicle or electronic device, animals reacting, a physiological effect such as paralysis or heat and discomfort in the witness, or some physical trace like impressions in the ground, scorched or otherwise affected vegetation, or a chemical trace.
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Encounters in which an animated entity is present; these include humanoids, robots, and humans who seem to be occupants or pilots of a UFO.
Others have added a Fourth Kind, which involves a human being abducted by aliens.

I saw this movie when it came out. I was 18 years old. This was one of the first movies to make an alien visitation seem like a positive thing. Spielberg release a Special Edition about 20 years later. Primarily the difference is that you go on the ship with Richard Dreyfus' character. The inside of the ship is cool, but I am satisfied with this version of the movie. Virtual hug.
A few thoughts, and don't expect anyone to agree. For starters, this is in my top 20 of all time fav films. Secondly, decades ago, my husband admitted to me, if he had a chance to go to space, and leave earth behind, he would. After around 30 or so years, I should ask him if he's of the same opinion now. From that alone, without the imprint the aliens gave Roy, I can see him leaving the world behind. What called to him overrode bonds.
Speaking of bonds, the kiss between Jillian and Roy never came off to me as romantic. It was a kiss goodbye to the only person who understood the experiences of the other, basically driven mad by the images in their heads, losing a child to the extraterrestrials, then helping each other reach the top of Devil's Tower, to hopefully get their questions answered. As Lacombe said, they were invited.
The first time I saw the aliens exit the mothership, I cried, because I was imagining what such an experience would be like. I took the ending as the extraterrestrials returning those they previously abducted or invited, for new guests. I don't find the film strange at all, and I'm not quite sure the things you pointed you found odd. You're describing it, I kept waiting for an explanation why - did you come into the film with expectations, or preconceived notions?
Lastly, in 2017, I drove up with my family to Devil's Tower, to watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind on its 40th anniversary. Folks came from all over the continent, as well as other continents. It was an amazing experience. You might find a couple videos folks uploaded from their visit there for the event, and perhaps more from other years.

You should watch E.T. by Steven Spielberg
The goal was to get acquainted. First contact? The aliens planned it in advance. They let us know when and where. So, it was a let's meet. And the humans had the platform set up ready to go. Spielberg has a long documentary about the making of this and what his influences were. Very interesting to watch. It's a documentary. I love this movie. Top 10 of all time. 👍😎🇺🇲
Look at it this way: If God came down and invited you to heaven, would you go? or worry about your family? I mean, this is God for ... well ... God's sake. :)
Roy was given the opportunity to get answers to secrets of the universe like no other human before (except those that were abducted). Something that big ... I couldn't pass it up for anything, even a family.

Spielberg later thought as you two did, that he maybe should not have just had Dreyfuss' character leave his wife and kids. I always felt that way, too. In an otherwise great movie that was the one error Spielberg wished he could fix.
When Close Encounters was released I was 11 years old. It was a great time for movies. Back then, and still today, I never wondered about how he could leave his family behind. Roy had an extremely intense experience that included a subconscious command to meet up in Wyoming. It was imperative that he get there and was driven by that one thing. Once he was there, he had the chance to go with the aliens. If I was in this exact situation I would choose to go. Staying on Earth? That’s what I don’t get. To have the chance to go into the galaxy and see whats there, while traveling with beings that will keep me from aging so I can stay as long as I want, while learning as much as I could from them. It would be a dream come true. Also, my wife would know this about me and would understand why I chose to ho.

Time dialation or time loop movies never make any rational common sense because they're pure fantasy and fictional. There is no truth to going back in time and changing past events to suit a better present or future for yourself. The past is set in stone and cannot be changed because that's an immutable and fundamental law of this universe. If you could change past events it would cause limitless catastrophe where not only the events you change would cause problems but it would cause other events that are connected, to change as well, and those outcomes aren't known.
If an advanced species could go back into the past what would stop them from going back to when this universe was just starting to be created and they stopped it from being created? Do you see the problem? I highly doubt whomever created this universe would allow some low level species within their creation to destroy their creation, so you create an immutable physical law that won't allow anything within the creation to destroy that creation. The past is there for a reason, its to learn from our mistakes and its not there to cheat life out of. Time loop movies can make great entertainment to watch but that's about all they do.
Thank you Ryl for what you said about him abandoning the family! I put off watching your reaction to this because I have seen a number of other reactors overlook that aspect of the plot and just gush excessively at the end, which kind of irritated me. I’m middle aged but only just saw this movie for the first time a few years ago and I got so hung up on that abandonment point, and how it seems ignored by both the Richard Dreyfuss character and the director at the end, that I ended up disliking the movie and feeling like it was overhyped as a result (and then also disliking those reactors who overlooked it while being so excited for his character to go to space). I’m so glad to see someone else was so struck by that point, so here’s an extra comforting and grateful virtual hug for you! 🤗🫂🤗🫂🤗

Watch "Fire in the Sky" next. True story about a logger in Arizona in 1975, Travis Walton, he and his logging crew spotted a UFO while in the forest and Walton walked-up to it and it shot a beam of light out on him and lifted him up. The rest of the crew panicked and hit the gas in the truck and sped away. When they came back, Walton and the object were gone. There was suspicion of murder, however Walton was found naked a few days later miles away. He later claimed that when he ran up to the object that the light caused him severe burns, so he was lifted aboard where they had to heal him then dropped him off. It's an interesting story.
You guys should check out the Korean movie Ballerina if you haven’t already seen or heard of it, it’s kinda like an action thriller, I’ve only seen a few RUclipsrs react to it. But its genuinely amazing
A little tip for you: There are several editions of this film, which might cause problems if your patrons try to sync it and they have the wrong version. Personally I'm most familiar with the 'special edition'. In fact this film was the first film to ever have an alternate cut released, and coined the phrase 'special edition' in 1980 when it was rereleased in its new form on the cinema.
Growing up, and even as an adult, how this film ended never occurred to me as strange. He left his wife and kids? So what? His wife was unsupportive and his kids were brats. Those were my thoughts when I was a youngster. It is actually only recently rewatching it (for about the zillionth time in my life) that I thought it felt strange to have all this rousing glorious music while a man is abandoning his wife and children, a mother standing there crying and nodding her approval of his decision.
I suppose you have to put yourself in Spielberg's shoes at the age he was. Before he was a father, having witnessed his parents' divorce and being heavily affected by it I'd say well into his adulthood. Spielberg's mother was a pianist, his father a computer engineer. In the climax of this film aliens and humans communicate using computers and music. The whole film is like Spielberg channeling his parents' inability to communicate through fantasy, and coming up with a creative solution that works at least in the fantasy.

As for Roy abandoning his family, if you listen to his side of the phone conversation, his wife tells him the kids and her are never coming back.

Well I hope Roy is prepared to be seriously probed. Einstein's theory of relativity states that the closer you get to the speed of light, the more time slows down for you. However, the ones you leave behind back on Earth experience time at a normal rate. It's possible when Roy comes back to Earth, his wife will be dead and his kids will be all grown. Very thoughtful reaction and review as always ladies.
I think I read somewhere Spielberg used an aerial picture of the lights of Los Angeles after dark for the lighted grid pattern on the UFO.

I know. This movie ends with more questions than answers although it's very engaging. The reason the pilots are their same age as in 1945 is because these third kinds travel at light speed which makes time on Earth pass faster. I know it's headache inducing. But keen reaction. 😊
This movie is an entertaining showcase of late 70's cutting edge effects.
It's realistic... if aliens came, we wouldn't know ANYTHING AT ALL. It would all be speculation as to what was happening, and all we could do is wait and see what THEY do. It would be tense. But if I saw that spider alien I would NOPE out!

I saw this when it came out. This when you just go to the movies and buy your tickets when you get there. Me and my date waited in line 45 minutes in 20 degrees temperature in Chicago. It was worth it. Thanks ladies . Enjoyed again.
I saw this as a teenager back in the day it blew my mind. The imagery was spectacular..then Star Wars did then Terminator 2 Judgement Day was my final mind blown movie. What a time it was

40:14 - NOT AGING - It's not about the planet they get taken to. It's about the ship they're on - it's ability to travel Faster-Than-Light (FTL). It would have to travel at those speeds because the aliens would probably live soooooo incredibly far away from Earth (even with our own galaxy - the milky way) that at sub-light "normal speeds" everyone on board couldn't live long enough for the amount of time it would take them to get back home. When you travel at FTL speeds, the regular laws of physics (specifically relating to time-flow) begin to break down.
The aliens' space ship travels close to the speed of light, which causes the time dilation.
The closer you get to the speed of light, the more slowly time passes for you.
It is impossible to travel at the speed of light or faster than the speed of light.

I was 8 when I saw this in the theater. After that, I never looked up at the night sky the same way.
(Fast forward to 2017. I accidentally captured a ufo in a picture. I had a photo/video expert look at it. Yes, it’s not clear- but all he said was, “It appears to have an energy field around it”. That’s it. Not another word.)
When the mother ship comes over Devil's Tower, you can see a gold painted R2D2 attached to the bottom of the ship. A year before Star Wars came out. Total Easter Egg that Spielberg put in because he had seen the artwork for Star Wars.
Star Wars came out May 77, 6 months before CE3K. ILM did the effects for both films. ILM put in the R2-D2, which was painted silver. The actual model still exists and can be seen at the Smithsonian.

An unimagined sequel to this movie should tell the story when Roy comes back in 2024 sees the current state of things and promptly says "F this, pack it up" and gets back on the mothership and leaves.
Wait for me, Roy! The big problem with mankind is people can't let other people be free. We're going to force everyone to behave like us mentality. And there's no end to the excuses they'll find to trample everyone's rights. The ends justify the means insanity.

It’s an igneous intrusion that was well below the surface and slowly cooled (producing the distinctive columns) and only later was exposed through erosion of the surrounding sedimentary rock.

I always hated Roy's wife for leaving him like that, can't bear to think about how she is going to fuck his kids up. So when he was smoochin' UFO homegirl I was cheering. She was cooler. In case you didn't know, Spielberg has said publicly that he is currently working on the sequel. Supposed to be out in 2026.
FYI, this movie is widely regarded as the most accurate UFO movie. The "French Scientist Dude" is based on Jacques Vallee (vah-lay), who is perhaps the most respected UFO researcher on Earth. Surely one of the most highly respected, at the very least. I believe Spielberg consulted with him on this movie. If my memory is correct Dr. J. Allen Hynek also makes a brief cameo there at the end, as the "bearded old dude with the pipe," during the finale part wit da aliens. You probably don't recognize him from his "Project Blue Book" days when he was takin' money from Uncle Sam to crush the UFO story in the news, he later changed his mind and became a UFO dude basically.
Also, in case you don't know, there is major legislation going through the US Congress right now (again)(second year in a row) called the UAPDA (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Disclosure Act), which requires all offices of the govt, to include; the Military, the Intelligence Community, and private aerospace contractors, to turn over all their UFO related files to the National Archives for review for potential declassification. It also establishes a Presidential Committee to review said documents and decide what to declassify. It also re-asserts the govt's right to 'eminent domain' over any recovered "exotic materials." Or "biologicals."
In June of last year a high ranking Military Intelligence whistleblower, MAJ David Grusch (Air Force/NRO/NGA) came forward and testified, under oath, to Congress that he had uncovered elements of the government that have been hiding an illegally run crash retrieval and reverse engineering program from the President and the Congress since at least the 1950's. The Inspector General of the Intelligence Community officially ruled Grusch's allegations "Credible, and Urgent." Look it up. Over the last year or so, several other even more senior members of the military and intelligence communities have come forward publicly to validate Grusch's credentials, and his story. These include the former head of NOAA, a two star admiral in the US Navy, if I'm not mistaken, as well as a Former Deputy Secretary of Defense for Intelligence.
Just this month former Intelligence Community member Luis Elizondo has publicly stated that "Roswell" was in fact, a crash retrieval event wherein multiple "non human biologicals" and one "craft" were recovered. He maintains that he was cleared by the DoD to say this publicly. You may remember him from the NY Times article in 2017, which accompanied the "leak" of several high resolution IR (thermal) gun camera videos of UFO's/UAP's taken by US Navy F-18's during training exercises off the East and West coasts of the US over a period of 6 years if I remember correctly. Fun fact, two of the pilots who were in the air during the time the videos were being taken, (LT Ryan Graves, and CMDR David Fravor), testified to Congress about it, under oath, in the same hearing as David Grusch. Last year.
At the time of the encounter CMDR Fravor was the Commanding Officer of the Squadron which encountered and filmed the UFO's on the West Coast I believe.
Steven thought of doing a sequel shortly after the film's release but decided against it. There are no plans for a second film.
yes, love this film, better than E. T. for sure, but it does have a few loopholes. like why didn't all those other people in orange jumpsuits board the spaceship? there was no point even having them in the movie if they just stayed on earth. and richard dreyfuss' home life seemed a little off. those segments are my least liked parts of the film. and why kidnap the kid if they were just going to release him a few days later? another problem is there's now THREE OFFICIAL VERSIONS of the film. the dvd has all 3 versions and includes a poster pull out that illustrates all the similarities and differences of the 3 versions. i'm so tired of "director cuts" and added footage BS. just release a final version of a film and BE DONE WITH IT!

Yeah the War Of Worlds remake was great. It had some seriously intense scenes.
Its a "strange" movie by today standards because anything different these days is consider a menace, bad, dangerous.
Back then there was people who doesn't think like that. And btw, an alien species so advanced to have achieved interstellar travler can't be "evil" by definition. Too advanced. They don't need another planets resource because they probably can produce these resources from nothing. Being "evil" is a common trait of underdeveloped and barbaric stage of a culture evolution.
It’s nice that every one of you reaction channels seem to follow each other and all comment on the same movie within a matter of weeks of each other to address the same thing.
However, it sure would be nice if someone had the guts to comment on something different than what every other channel is reacting to.
I offer you up several different choices to watch that are very good movies that no one else has shown.
The first one is “Pay It Forward”, with Haley Joel Osment (Sixth Sense and Forrest Gump), and Helen Hunt (Cast Away, Twister). It’s a great movie that will have you on a roller coaster of emotions.
Secondly, I suggest “I Am Sam” with Dakota Fanning ( Man on Fire) and Sean Penn, star of many other films. This is another great film that I think will have you flooded with emotions.
Third, I suggest “Into the Wild”, which is the true story of a young man graduating from college and striking out on his own to explore the world. A very interesting and beautiful film.
Instead of being a follower, why not be the leader and have the others following you guys for a change?
