I'm very happy this was uploaded. Most people don't realize that Hamming was one of the great applied mathematicians of the 20th century. He was one of the first mathematicians to take scientific computing seriously, and helped to develop many standard numerical implementations at Bell Labs. He also made incredible contributions to coding theory and digital communication. Without him we wouldn't be here on RUclips right now.
I worked through his book "Methods of Mathematics" in its entirety. I loved the nuggets of wisdom he placed throughout it, and he was the one who made me love mathematics.
Had the great pleasure of taking his Digital Filters course while at NPS in '88. Here is a few nuggets from a handout he gave us on the first day: "Observations for Students" by R.W. Hamming. 1. All learning occurs in the student's head. 2. At best, the teacher is only a coach to guide, encourage, and criticize your style. 3. The purpose of the examples and exercises cannot be "to get the right answers" because they are already known! Their purpose, like that of running a mile, is to improve yourself. 4. Apparently, that which you actively learn for yourself you can use later creatively; that which you learn passively you can only use to follow others. 5. The attitude that you are here to be taught rather than to learn is counter productive. and finally #12. The most important things you can do while here are: a. Learn to learn, b. Learn to question things, c. Acquire the permanent habit of learning.
1. "Education is learning what, when and why to do a thing; Coaching is how to do it" 2. "In Science, you shouldn't do what you know; In Engineering, you shouldn't do what you don't know" 3. "The past was a way less determined than we knew; the future will be a way less open-branched than we can know"
These lectures, and the associated book, are priceless. They are the best advice anyone will ever give you about leading a meaningful life and achieving success in your career. Saver yourself from years of frustration, and listen to Hamming! He knows what he is talking about! In a sense his lectures are even better than Feynman lectures, sure, Feynman is an amazing speaker, probably much better than Hamming, but after Feynman lecture you walk away not knowing much more than you already did it terms of actual, useful knowledge. Not so with Hamming lectures, each video you watch, each chapter you read in the book, you are learning important and useful information that you can use right away to make better decisions in your life!
You guys should check book " On Creativity" by David Bohm. Bohm was a great physicist. I think that book is more specific and deep. Good read after Hamming's.

Long term satisfaction and self respect will never come from the endless novelty created by some to be instantly consumed by others. Work hard, smart, and passionately, and maybe you can go down in the history books as one of the greats.
The struggle : It is not the achievement of the goal that is the best part. It is the struggle to success that is the best part. I once went to a movie with a friend and we laughed and laughed and laughed at all the ridiculous situations. Once we got out, he said, you know , that wasn't a funny movie at all. And I agreed. All the laughter did not make the movie funny at all. A pleasant life is not a sum total of all the pleasant moments. Somehow it adds up differently. A good life is not a having many good moments. In order to have a good life, you must struggle. You need to take yourself at hand and manage yourself to be the person you wish to be, to achieve the goals you wish and not ideal drift like a drunken sailor. The unexamined life is not worth living. Manage yourself. Struggle. And you will be happy.
While i understand the positive responses to this video, it might be worth pointing out the "survivor" bias in his discourse. Positive bias might bring a lot to some of us, but it might not bring something useful to others. Does fixing objectives, taking upon the struggles in life and giving your all automatically makes your life "worth living", "meaningful", or even increases your chances of "success"? Let's not forget this is only one's opinion and that following it will not necessarly bring the results you hope.
I think the only and only way to lead a meaningful life is have 1. Learning attitude. 2. Taking action. These two attitudes with iteration are the way to lead a satisfactory life. Hamming's is pointing to the learning attitude. He trying to say that you have to be aware instead of being a drunken sailor.
Random thoughts: Lately I have been thinking about these things a lot. About what I am trying to do in my field of work and how not be good but great. And so there are challenges to precisely and consciously understand what separates great from good. Remember that there are very few great people in any field a time.
