  • 'Canal Feedback' - Geddit?!
    I've been feeling a little anxious recently about some of the elements within the videos I've been posting. These elements are important to me, and the feedback on my channel that I've received has been wonderful. I truly value the exchanges we have on here in the comments (and occasionally by email or 'meet-up'), but am seeking some sensible feedback on what I could be doing differently in the video-making. I'm not planning on great changes, more like tweaks and blind spots.
    Thanks for watching (as always), and for any ideas you feel would be useful to share.

    Great video. I enjoyed your talk. I'm the same vintage as you, and what you said resonates with me.

    Hey David. Honest video. One thing I will say is that I've been a television writer and performer for 40 years plus and the biggest lesson I have learned is that you cannot please everyone, and in the end have to do what pleases you. It might sound simple but it's the truth. And when you get to the point where it's about you and not others, you will feel the freedom that comes with it. And let's face it no one judges us more harshly than ourselves. Part of the truth is, I don't really know you and you don't really know me, we're just two people who met posting about our mad love of music, and commented on one another's posts. But I like the spirit of the person I see in you. It's a weird thing in life to put yourself out there, because the hopes and dreams you have about doing it might not come back to you or be fulfilling in the way you wanted. Asking the tough questions is a good thing. I'll end with a phrase I've said to my fellow writers and performers and they in turn have said to me when doubt or anxiety creeps in "You are enough". And as my friends and family in the Boston area would say. "If people don't like it "F*&k'em"! Cheers 🙂

      That's brilliant, Bobby. Thanks. For the most part that "Do it for yourself" ethos is how I've approached making videos. Now and again I might think a bit too much about how something will be received, but I can correct myself in that regard pretty well. Also my schtick is not to court controversy or produce click-bait, so I don't attract negativity in the comments. I'm just trying to (within the bounds of low production values, and no over the top thumbnails) get a few more clues on what I might do better. That notion of 'You are enough" is a wise thing, indeed.

    Just keep on doing what you're doing. I started watching for the music but watch most of them now. You're a genial host and you've definitely inspired me to do something similar once I've got the time. My own channel is on my to do list when I retire in a few years. If it's half as good as yours I'll be happy. Keep em coming David

      Thanks a lot, David. No time like the present to get your own channel going. I think the key is to do it for yourself, your own interest, and not be concerned about 'an audience'. That's hard to do, of course, because occasionally you'll think about what people want rather than what you want to do. I guess, in this video, I'm trying to gain a little feedback on how to tweak things, and not ask people to say they like this or that topic. So, for example, if people say "we'd like to know more about your listening room", then it might prompt me to get on and do that. Anyway, cheers for the feedback.

    You’re a real original David! Deep thinker, and truly engaging, no matter the subject. “I want to give people a sense of why things matter”…That’s really everything in my opinion, and it’s why I always try to inject my own experiences into my videos for that very reason. I don’t like golf either. 🤠

    Just be you, David. People will tune in to what interests them. Also, ignore any negative feedback because you will never please everyone, and some people are just mean! I am mostly here for the music discussion, but your personal stories are what sets your channel apart from many others. For those of us, who are interested in the experiences of others, the stories you tell are a strength. Best wishes!

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826

      That's very kind, thanks. I'm lucky in that I don't attract trolls or negative feedback. The only hostile comment I might get is in relation to making the 'wrong choice' about the worst Genesis album. That's opinion stuff, and doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm actually gratified that those comments are made at all. It's all good as far as I'm concerned.

    David.... I've been watching you for about 8 months, mainly for the music, but I also enjoy your little stories about what your life looked like when that album came out and when you bought it..... it differentiates you from the others.. which is one of the reason I keep returning. Keep going with whatever you want to do.... mix it up.... if there's a video i don't want to watch, then i just don't watch it.. but I'll still come back for the subject I'm interested in. Keep at it.

    I used to keep a journal too. I still have them: more than 35 hardbound notebooks, totalling a few thousand pages. I gave it up when I ran out of time. I've considered burning them! I'm never sure if people want to see stuff beyond music on my channel. I have to say that some of the most interesting VC videos are ones when people give more info about themselves, like that contest from Lloyd Boone where people were asked to share what they do for a living. I'd say you are doing everything right. "Golf is a good walk spoiled." - Mark Twain

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  15 часов назад

      Wow Brian, that's impressive. 35 notebooks. Crikey. Do you ever dip into them to refresh your memory? That's an incredible archive, and I bet you've forgotten most of it, as life takes over.
      I was never so diligent in my writing. There'd a be a flurry for a few weeks, then a gap of two years; a trend that has continued, more or less, to the present day. Right now, about nine months on from my last entry.
      However, this last weekend, those few, forgotten notebooks I dug-out provided quite a profound experience for me, and not for the most obvious reason. It would be good to talk about it maybe, but the experience confirmed to me that my writings of 40 years ago are a gift to myself in the present day. One helluva gift.
      At times, I've thought that any of my note-taking has merely temporary value and, every so often, I should just bin or burn what I write. Never did, and now so pleased I didn't.

    • @EmbryonicRobot
      @EmbryonicRobot 9 часов назад

      @@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 I have dipped in from time-to-time and I was both surprised at some coherent segments and horrified at other genuinely cringy passages. I have questioned whether I would want anyone else to read the journals and I have to admit that it would be horrible. You now, maybe too much revelation and too little that is compelling. So, it may only ever be interesting to me. I really might have to burn them!

    I think you have got a good balance with the channel as it is. A couple of suggestions for future videos would be to do a must have for your collection video with perhaps about 20 of your all time favourite albums that could include all genres. I have discovered some artists who I would not of thought of buying until I watched your videos. I think one of them was Agnes Obel who you described as sublime and her Philharmonics album has become one of my favourites. I am also interested in hifi equipment videos so a video of your journey in that regard would be very interesting. Since ill health has made me became housebound RUclips has become my window to the outside world and your videos and a couple of others have helped me immensely. I have daily chats with my old friends on line but it’s nice to watch someone outside of that circle who has similar interests to myself and it stimulates my interests in music and fills quite a bit of time so thank you for doing what you do David.

I dont make videos but music has been always in my life first single i bought was rat trap boomtown rats 1978 . I like your presentation and always get something from it . Recommending records is a good thing and discussing why and what they meant to you. I tell my kids well adults now about growing up in northern Ireland and about the music scene and funny things that haoto me i dont know if they believe my stories true stories lol . Hope you continue with your music content and i must search out walking and cycling as that has been a big part of my life too . Good luck with golf i have dabled but never a regular golfer. Cheers Joe. I've never been a regular golfer, but do occasionally play with people who REALLY CARE. The odd occasion I beat them with my cheap-ass clubs makes for a hilarious time in the bar afterwards. I find not giving a toss really helps my game!
      Thanks for your comments on the channel. Like I say in this video, it's deliberately a mixed bag, but I get anxious sometimes that it doesn't have as clear an identity as other channels. I try and console myself that this doesn't matter in the long run, and that the channel is more like a surrogate personal journal for me to 'unload' and capture thoughts and memories. I'm always open to suggestions on how to improve things though, including leaning this way or that, topic-wise.

      I'm now, officially, a bearded old man! I'm already getting grief about at home, but it's not like I can play around my hairstyle, is it? 😅 Thanks for commenting though, Pete. I perfectly understand that not all of my videos are of interest to all who tune-in every time, and that's fine. My thinking here is maybe along the lines of shorter v longer videos, perhaps do interviews or double-headers, do what we call 'needle drops' (playing music samples), or that balance between the personal stuff (which, to be fair, makes one person's experience distinctive versus another's) and the non-personal. A priority for me is to keep the personal interest in there, maybe do even more, but that risks being too personal and then worrying about overstepping the mark. One thing for sure, is that there won't be much change around here, maybe a few tweaks here and there

    Sir David of Upper Midlands. #1 Golf. Watch video by the late and great Robin Williams on golf (from a British /Scottish perspective). You will die laughing! Use my excuses when asked to play golf. A) I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground and B) the best balls I hit the last time I played golf is when I stepped on the rake in the sand trap on the 3rd hole!!. #2 On your channel. Keep on keeping on! I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of your channel because it is not 'I like this record, or that record' - your bike rides (fab) and you commentary (excellent). #3. Your new facial growth...excellent! I have been into LP records sine 1963. Born in 1950 (easy to do my own math on my age) So - take care and LIFE really matters and a life well lived.
