As a semi driver, you are supposed to scan FORWARD of you, not right in front. You need 7 seconds between you and the person in front of you to safely stop. And clearly, you NEVER watch videos while driving.
I've been passed multiple times on I-81 in Virginia by an Eastern European driver in a truck who always has his left foot up next to the driver's door, and a phone in his face. I used to drive a 63 Mph limited Freightliner, he would roll past me at 70 or 75 in the left lane paying way too much attention to his phone. When I use my phone GPS in concert with my Qualcomm GPS it is down on the center dash area with the volume up for waypoints. There is no reason for planting a tablet or phone in your face while your job is controlling a vehicle.
This didn’t happen because he briefly looked at his tablet or phone. He was going 13 miles over the limit and didn’t notice stopped traffic until it was too late. He was completely disconnected from driving, he must’ve thought the truck would know when to stop, what a clown
As a professional driver for FedEx, I was taught to observe up to a half mile in front of my vehicle's current position to adjust my driving accordingly! It has worked for for almost 30 years!
That goes with anyone while driving you are supposed to look way down the road not just what’s right infront of you. If you see a bunch of cars in the distance might want to start slowing down.

While I agree with the first part about him not being upset, your math on the rest is off. This happened on Jan 12th of 23. So basically 2022 as the majority of people forget about a new year until Feb. So 4 years was probably more like middle to the end of 2018.

Here it's a $1,200 fine for touching your phone while driving. And cameras are set up overhead in some places to catch this. Serious deterrents are needed to help avoid tragedies like this..
In Florida they actually started using cameras to check for truck and bus drivers touching their phones in 2023. It might seem draconian, but as this video shows the consequences of rear ending someone with a truck/bus are horrendous.
You know an actuator could be used in phones that when in motion it would be off and only accessible for 911. But the government would have to demand phone manufacturers install these.
Why can't people wait to text, talk to someone on WhatsApp, watch a video? Cell Phones and tablets are an epidemic in this country! People are driving on the highways with their faces on the cellphone screen.
No. Not thinking rationally is an epidemic in this country. TikTok did not force his hands and glancing at a tablet that should have been in a more appropriate position wouldn’t have caused what he did.
So they tried giving that one rookie truck driver 110 years who actually showed extreme remorse for the accident he caused several years back and this guy who showed zero remorse and who was 100% distracted and careless only gets 4 years each victim. I believe everyone has a different way of reacting after an incident but to lie about it and act nonchalant after taking a life/lives is just pure evil.
He either fell asleep or was watching TikTok for a lot longer than the few seconds that he said he looked away. Prayers to the families of the victims.
Most training companies show that it takes several football fields to truly stop. They tell me the cruises have changed but still doubt he was hovering over the brake as he said.
It's ingrained in true truck drivers minds that the cell phone does not appear at all when you're making a run! My husband used to drive trucks and he still to this day puts his phone away inside the middle console whilst he drives his personal car/ truck.
As a 30 year trucker this makes me sick. The driver doesn't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation. Unforgiveable stupidity. Some people don't belong in a big rig.

You need 7 seconds between you and the person in front of you to safely stop.
