Just bought the Platinum, very pleased with it. Brought it specifically to use with watercolour. I bought converter and cartridges. I struggled to load the cartridge, eventually solved the problem by very gently inserting the tail in the cartridge while holding upright and then loading it, also by holding the nib end upright. As the instructions were all in Japanese cannot tell whether this was the right way to go about it. The tail on mine is also black. I did not realise there is also a medium, I hoped to use this to accompany a Rotring artpen 1.5 I have had for about 25 years, so will probably buy the medium as well, to get an intermediate size line. The Rotring is a very rare pink. I also have a Lamy desk pen a similar size, around 10 years old. Used carefully they give long service, so am hoping the platinum will be the same.
Thanks Teoh, this is exactly what I was looking for!
I just ordered the DP-1000 and wasn't sure if I had made the right decision until I watched your video - I love it!
+Katz75 Have fun drawing with it 😂
I have the Platinum. It came with the carbon ink cartridge. Definitely one of my favorite pens. I absolutely adore your sketches from the train... I hope to see you use it more!
Great review - excellent demos!. I have the Falcon s well. The "sf" on the Falcon stands for "soft fine", and is referring to the soft, semi-flexible nib. I laughed when you said you felt strange drawing with the fine nib, because I feel like a different person when drawing with a thicker nib :)
SF on the Namiki Falcon stands for Soft Fine. Thank you for comparing it to the dip pen. I didn't realize quite how fine the line was.
Perfect review! Thank you for making this.
Thank you Teoh for this perfect review.
+Mehdi Bouznad Thanks 😁
Thanks for sharing your review.
At the moment I tried the pilot desk pen it's really good. It stays in the holder in my notebook.
Super thin, suitable with cheap papers that i use in day to day
Mine is a silver nib tho
Great video as always, thank you Teoh Yi Chie.
Thank you so much !!! Excellent info. I love my Platinum Desk Pen .
nice artwork. I loved the thin pen. It defines a lot more focus. Makes the characters crisp. Or may in the video the camera catches it that way. overall I love your videos, especially the art/drawing part. God bless you :)
Just an FYI, stands for "soft-fine". Great video as always!!
+ns Thanks. I couldn't remember what it represents
I really like the pen case you show at the beginning of the video what it? Thanks, Yuval
Pilot DPN-70 how to change nib. Please tell me I have an old Pilot pen. Now I want to Clean the pen. Thank you.
Thanks for your video. What is the one that you use for thicker line drawings? Sailor? Could I know the model? Thank you.
Thanks! I got a platinum desk pen, it's very useful
SF stands for Soft Fine as it is a flex nib pen.
Hi Teoh! Great review once again. I was wondering what nib you used for the dip pen?
+Lee 진 It's a Zebra G Nib. The most common type.
Nice review as always Teoh. I have the platinum since a few years but didn´t know about the pilot.
Maybe you forgot to mension that the Platinum actually is made to be able to use with carbon ink.
MultiEbbot There are two Platinum desk pens. The one Teoh is demonstrating is the regular desk pen. The platinum pen without the gold tail is the 'Carbon' ink pen - it has a special channel to manage the pigment ink.
ah.... ok didn´t know that.Thanks. thought it was a new improved design cause the all black tail seems a little fragile.
SF on the falcon means Soft Fine. The falcon comes in fine, extra fine, medium, and broad, all "Soft"
I have the platinum desk pen, it and the pilot both use the platinum base. From the manufacturer, the platinum should come with a carbon ink cartridge (it's called the carbon desk pen) and is designed to work specifically well with platinum's carbon ink. The nibs are both steel.
The pens only come in two colors, black and red (both come in both colors)
The pens are made specifically to be used with the base, which gives you a very convenient stand to just grab out the pen and start writing if you need to sign a check or quickly write a note. For this reason, I went with the medium, but I've heard it's also extremely good in EF. When used with the base, there is no specific sealing mechanism, but the gravity and seal is good enough to keep the nib from drying out. I've let mine sit for a few days and it started immediately, even with the thick carbon ink.
As for the carbon ink, I'm going to be switching it to noodlers heart of darkness after it runs dry, because I think carbon black is just too dry of an ink.
I have the medium, which I would suggest for anyone who isn't using it for dedicated sketching (or, you could get the double base with a black and a red, one medium and one EF, and have the best of both worlds!) the medium is almost glassy smooth with just the barest amount of tooth. A really great note taker and smooth signature scribbler.
A lot of people like the fine line with a carbon ink because it works like india ink to a good degree, letting you draw out a base and then paint over it without any smearing.
+Colin Martin Thanks for the info. I thought it was Super Fine. 😂
The extra fine is "SE", fine is "SF", Medium "SM", and Broad "SB"
Thank you ! I was looking for a Platinum desk pen good review, I got one :)
Is the Platinum Carbon black ink really good for Watercolor?
The ink is waterproof
Great review love your artistic samples a dream for me :-)
I use the Platinum desk pen with Platinum carbon black cartridges (have not purchased a converter yet) and love it. I like the delicate line for botanical sketches and for sketching buildings. Stephanie Bower recommended this pen in her Craftsy class on sketching architecture. Ink in these cartridges is waterproof, unlike the ink in the Platinum Preppy cartridges. Only downside to Platinum desk pen is that you can't post the cap. Good comparison of the Platinum to the Pilot model (which I was not aware of). I've heard that the Platinum converter does not hold much ink - is that your experience?
+Sharon Nolfi The thin lines don't call attention to themself and when used with watercolour lets the watercolour standout.
Does the Platinum converter hold less ink than other converters?
+Sharon Nolfi It holds the typical amount of ink as other converters. Anyway, this pen does not use a lot of ink so the ink can last for a long time.
hi Teoh! have you noticed if the Platinum desk pen writes thinner than Preppy EF? or they are about the same? thank you!
Desk pen is slightly thinner
Which one is thinner? Anyone know a fountain pen that goes slightly thinner then the Carbon Desk Pen?
Platinum 3776 Ultra Extra Fine. I have both it and the Carbon Desk Pen.
The Platinum is a really wonderful pen for all purposes.
My question: are all platinum desktop pens suitable for waterproof (carbon ink) and also is there one with medium nib? Thanks for your reviews, they are always very helpfull
So called "desk pens" are usually extra fine nibs
have you tried the pilot metropolitan? if you have what are your thoughts on it?
I've not tried the Pilot Metropolitan before.
Could you tell me the name of the nib on the dip pen? Thanks!
+Martine Lizotte Not sure if there is a special name for the nib.
@@teohyc She means the G nib, I guess? I was also curious what brand it is.
What do you prefer: to use a dip pen or pens like these? What best for what?
I prefer fountain pens because dip pens require you to bring an extra ink bottle out.
But if you work at home, not going on plein air, is there difference in drawing quality with fountain and dip pen?
If I work at home, I can use anything. Advantage of dip pens is they can create really fine lines and thick lines easily. So they have good line variation. Some flexible fountain pens also have line variation but usually cannot be as thick as a dip pen
Thanks
Your Platinum Desk Pen looks different to mine.
Shame you couldn't compare the Platinum, Pilot and the Sailor desk pens.
I find the Sailor has a little more flex because of the shape of the nib. Platinum is my fave though as there's something pure about drawing with a extra fine nib 😎
I think that's a new model desk pen. Mine doesn't have the gold tail.
Colin Martin You may have the Platinum 'Carbon' desk pen. There are two Platinum desk pens. Teoh's is the regular pen. The platinum pen without the gold tail is the 'Carbon' ink pen - it has a special channel to manage the pigment ink.
I think you are right - the one I have is the Carbon Desk Pen which doesn't have the gold end.
I didn't know that there's the Carbon and non-Carbon desk pen. I thought this one's the Carbon desk pen.
theartyone thanks for clearing that up! i thought they were all carbon and it was simply a model change
What pen wrap is it, if you don't mind me asking?
It's a Pilot Pensemble
The orange one at 0:30 is not made of leather, but synthetics, so I suspect it is not a Pensemble, but other brand. Would like to buy something not expensive like that.
Good morning Teoh, it will be cool if you add a video with your wife!.
Hi fellow sgers. Whats the most thin fine cheap fountain pen?
The pens featured in this video are quite affordable, relatively speaking
How about pilot penmanship?
@@MlleVB I've not tried that but now I'm interested to check that out
Preppy has EF nib
For a affordable pen made from better plastic, there's the 78G+ that Pilot sells in China. If you're not in Asia, you're more likely to find them in Ebay.
"When I use this desk pen to draw, it feels like I'm a different person... feels a bit weird." --Teoh Yi Chie
I now have a way to describe the sensation I get when I use a writing instrument I don't enjoy, or an art supply or technique I don't use very often. Thank you.
