    You've got my vote for the RS4 K04. As I've probably said before, I did hybrid them with the compressor off an RS6 so as to keep the intake temperatures down for reliability. I'm the 3rd owner of these turbos and the rumor was that the first owner ran them at very high PSI. At the time I had to get a stud on the turbo to exhaust manifold fixed, which meant an engine drop and so I took the opportunity. The short of it is that my turbos are about 15 years old, were rebuilt once about 9 years ago, and have about 20 weekends of track time on them. They are reliable!
    One other thing bigger turbo folks miss is that the exhaust manifold is basically not upgradable, there's little space to do so. The manifolds on the RS4 and S4 are the same. Given this, much bigger turbos have to run very high PSIs to compensate and that's not great for spool up and I might venture turbo life. The other, as you have rightly said, is that we drive lower end torque, not high peak HP.

    • @ProjectCarTV
      @ProjectCarTV Год назад

      That’s actually not true about the exhaust manifolds. The RS4 ex man’s are designed differently and have larger ports.

    You overshot the price a lot man. You can build a solid stage 3 k04 car yourself for less. Custom tune is the way to go for sure. The k04 cars I have tuned perform very well.

I've had an 01 b5 s4 for the past 4 years that has needed some major maintenance which I plan to do in the next few months but once I get it back together would you mind if I reach out to you in regards to tuning and other modifications? Very interested in your advanced timing tune and what that entails.

    My s4 avant has k04 (wasnt built by me) but I think it runs great! I need to do some up grades and tuned it a bit to see how much I could get out of it... Supposedly I have around 320-340hp, with these mods, rs4 dps, chip tuning from sportec with exhaust from kat, im pushing max 18psi but holding 17psi... Im hoping to get some better intercoolers, 85mm maf and a good tune, hoping to get in the 400s hp

    K04's with mild tuning make an excellent street car! I went with Franken F4H's and am now upgrading to Franken F21MF. I would never hesitate to recommend K04's or F21's. Many years of events seeing them run strong consistantly!

      There are certainly more fun turbos out there than an RS4 K04. But 15 years of hard use (20 weekend of track use) have me convinced. I'd rather use my money elsewhere than doing multiple engine pulls and paying maybe $2-3k ($4-5k if you are paying someone) for new hardware and a tune each time. I'm also not feeling like rebuilding an engine or blown turbos.

    I have a Fusion Sport, which has the Ford v6 Twin Turbo Ecoboost engine in it with All Wheel Drive... I did some research and I believe Ford uses the Borg Warner turbo not sure which turbo but its definitely a twin turbo by them.. so these things must be pretty reliable if a big automaker is slapping them on there star engine in the F150 lineup and there Fusion Sports... that is quite the bulk order lol a freaking fusion that puts down 380 pound feet below 3,500 rpm with All Wheel Drive such a sweet car

    Funny thing about the "Chinese turbo" apprehension; I have a brand new borg-warner K04-015 sitting in a box in my living room waiting for me to install it in my B5 Passat (1.8t, 4motion, 5sp manual) and when I unboxed it and examined it, I saw "Made in China" printed on the serial number plate riveted to the compressor housing. I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

    Reliability comes to the tune aswell. BW k04 turbos are a great choice but after few monts you get used to the power and dont fill fast anymore.. I am running RS6 turbos now but if i had to go back maybe TTE 550s or 600 and will never run them to their full potential unless you built you engine.. 550s should spool quicker then my RS6s.. But BW k04 are bery good.. Good luck on your build. I also recoment jhm stage 4 cluth combo..

  • @Nightwalker86
    @Nightwalker86 6 лет назад +3

    The KO3, KO4, and F21 are all going to be about comparably reliable give or take. If you ask them to push too much air or don't watch cooling properly, you will make any of them fail. If you do your build properly and drive responsibly, they will last just fine (even stage 1 on KO3). It's not like they have inherently worse engineering for no particular reason. I think you are way overrating the reliability of the KO4 in a relative way. Turbos are considered a wear item on the B5 and should be treated as such.

    This video needs to be condensed as I feel what is said here is repetitive. The K04 is indeed a good OEM upgrade, but he hasn't addressed the anticipated turbo lag over the K03. The F21 would be a better choice in my opinion if cost is an issue, and one just wanted to replace a damaged K03.
    Personally I've upgraded my MK5 GTI to a F23T, with supporting mods and couldn't be happier for the past 2 years running reliably. The added cost of the K04, would have brought peace of mind, but could have been used for additional car parts. Repairing turbochargers is no longer a huge expense once you can buy the CHRA online, and install it yourself.

      There are alot of reasons the k04 is a solid upgrade. Builds more & sustains more boost faster then a k03 can. While not having to worry about it blowing up.

      Sebastian Tan I may be a little late to the party, but IMO. It is better. Forgoing the borg-warner I went with HPAMotorsports fully machined ko4 for my A3 2 years ago. I went full build on this car which cost quite a bit. After I crashed it. I went with HPA again for my other A3 with only the turbo being the upgrade. You will not maximize all the power capable, but it is very noticeable. Latter car still on stock components sans turbo.

      Gregory Fairchild man the k03 is a great turbo in and of itself, it just can’t handle the boost that a k04 can so when you start loading higher pressures and tuning you run the risk of blowing the k03 whereas the k04 will be able to handle it.

      You can but then you would need to remap the ECU to get it to work properly along with some other supporting mods as well so it works as well as it should. Putting on a KO4 on the stock ECU, you have the risk on killing your engine.

      @@paulattree4171 in order to get the full potential out of the kO4 you'll need injectors and a remap for those mods.A k04 on a ko3 tune can cause over boost problems which will cause it to go in limp mode any time you get into boost real quick so I got the Bosch 550cc injectors for pretty cheap they are everywhere and get a k04 tune for the injector size and you won't have to deal with the boost cut issue
