This why I love the hobby!!! It’s not all about selling, buying, slabs, etc. arguably the best part about it is the connections you make and the people you meet. Amazing story!💪🏻
My first card show ever was in 1989. My I was 12 years old and wanted a Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie. Everyone had them priced for $12. However, my mom only gave me a $10 bill. I was about to give up when I saw something that made me smile. Most tables had the Gary Sheffield UD rookie for $10 but one guy was selling it for $8. So I went up to a guy and offered him a Sheffield rookie and $2 for the Griffey. He accepted so I told him one second. I ran over to the other table purchased the Sheffield and ran back and handed it to him and gave him $2. I am 45 years old now and still have that Griffey Jr. and think about that day every time I go through my cards.
I’ve been feeling like this about the comics I’ve been collecting. It’s a weird anxiety, I loved collecting each book, probably much like you with the card, but the piles just start to stare back now. I think I’m ready for a small convention, your story makes it seem like a really fun side of the hobby. Thanks for sharing your story.
You are a gentleman and a scholar, sir. The hobby needs more ppl like you. I’ve always wanted to write children books. Your living your best life. God bless you and your wonderful wife.👍
Never seen any of your videos before but am glad I stumbled upon this. Happy you were able to downsize and get your collection in a good place for you. I wouldn’t worry about anyone saying you’re not a real collector. Take care.
I’ve been collecting since the early 70s. I’ve been winnowing down. Monster boxes full of stuff between (potentially) $20-$100 in penny sleeves. Sleeving and putting most stuff north of $100 in cases and larger monster boxes. Anything > $1K to the safety deposit box along w/ my largess when I was 12 and spent all my new clothes money on 1980 Topps basketball cards. Mom always understood. Tossing tons of commons not related to tough-to-complete sets. I’d like to grade all high-end stuff w/ an emerging competitor like TAG, but they won’t even get back to me re: their plans to eventually grade 70s-1999 stuff.
Who the heck gave you a thumbs down !! It is people like you why I’m in the hobby!! You’re truly a gift and I’m super stoked for you! I’d love to speak on diversity and inclusion ! Congratulations brother ❤️
Omg I feel the exact same way! I’ve got soooo much stuff and would love to refocus my collection. It gets very overwhelming. It would be nice to sell a bunch of stuff and make some bigger purchases. Quality over quantity
Dude! Super inspirational. I did a similar thing recently. Wife was getting on me about my collection, I whittled it way down and sold them at a local auction. Only kept my Eagles cards and a few random collectable cards. Also, just so you know, the kid you gave the Pokemon cards to will remember that for his entire life. It may not have been much monetarily but it was definitely something that he will carry with him and hopefully pass on to someone else when he gets older. Happened to me a few times.
I stumbled upon your RUclips channel this morning and this video was my introduction to you. You gave me the 'feels'. I look forward to much more from you. Thank you!
Really enjoyed your video. Subscribed and looking for more! Thank you for the great story behind your decision! You can never lose when you’re helping others!
Great Video!! My favorite saying is “Everything happens for a reason” I truly believe that! This life event proves it! Happy for you man. Thanks for sharing.🤙
I had a table at a card show last weekend. I was hoping that someone would come up to me and offer to buy everything. That did not happen. I'm so glad that a bulk buyer came to you. That's so cool.
This is a good story.A lot of individuals feel that same anxiety at some point regarding their collections. Whether it be a personal attachment to certain cards/items. This is a great opportunity for you moving forward. GREAT video, and keep up the good work!
So I came here to watch your card testimony story / very cool! But I too have written some kid’s books too about improving social skills etc. Can find on Amazon / I am a special Ed elementary teacher by degree, but love my cards & stories too! Take care & Aloha!
I just came across this video, what a Beautiful Story,GL with your Collection and your Book, You are Blessed and also a Beautiful Heart, I love you handle as well, take care Sir.
good insight. it just solidifies for me, that I´m not going to be chasing cards via boxes or packs. I might enjoy opening one every now and then, but my collection should be singles. I don't wanna get into a hoarding situations with 1000s of cards I don´t want
Here are my unsolicited thoughts on collecting- you decide what is right for you. If you felt stressed or whatever at the many cards that you have acquired over time, you are the arbiter of what is right for you. Kudos to you for being able to close this deal and the opportunity that it’s brought to you to effect change in so many kids lives in the future!
Wow that was super cool Ryan!! And it had to have been destiny that this guy stopped by your table and happened to be interested in the cards that you had for sale, just an awesome story.
hey, just stumbled across this video and enjoyed every second of it! thanks so much for sharing. a more mild and easy-going version of "another man's junk is another man's treasure" -- I completely agree!
Great video! I’ve been tossing around the idea of selling most of mine as well, for the same reasons. Love that yours is leading to something bigger for you!!
I started watching you because people are freaking about cards going down in price and I though maybe this was the start of a bunch of people that were going to sell off all their cards or what not. But what I ended up with was so much more satisfying. You are one amazingly contagious man that I am happy to hear is doing great things for kids around your area and probably reaching out to kids across the entire web. I would like to buy one of your books if you would sign it for me. I've had a goal my entire life and that's to get something I have wrote published but only because I know that I am horrible at my grammar and I'm not good at getting my point across. Clearly by the length this message is would clarify my certainty . However I have to ask how much did you sell your cards for. That's the one thing I am dying to know. I am 41 started collecting in the 80's just like you and have box's of cards that I go through all the time finding older cards that aren't worth a ton but its fun every few years to just go through all of them and keep myself entertained for hours sometimes even days. I have always saved up my collection and told myself , this is for when I get old and retire. lol Most of my collection got stolen so that went out the door but would have been cool anyways. Sorry this message is so long I just can't help myself I guess. You got me envious and intrigued . Thank you for all you do and thanks for being someone that stands up for people that are different . I have much a very high amount of respect for you and I only have seen one of your videos and that was this one I watched today. By the way I never comment on youtube channels. You might even be my first. lol Take care. I am not sure how to give you my info without giving it out to everyone else so I subscribed to your channel and will come back and check up if you comment back in a few days . I don't expect it but it would be nice. Have a good one . Stay safe and I wish your family a safe and healthy future. Your new friend, Travis B Carden (sorry for all the words I probably misspelled )
This resonates with me, I'll turn 36 this year and my person collection is around 140k cards. Key cards thru all the sports, thru most the years from late 80s to 2010s.
I sold my entire collection too starting last December and finishing in March, made some good money since I started about 5 years ago. Now it looks like it's close to the time I'm going to start buying some of them back with the prices going down fast. PS ... good luck with your endeavor speaking with the children. I hope you can bring strength to a child who is a little bit different from the others.
This is why the card show is STILL king! Nothing wrong with freaking out about it, I love when whales swallow up the little guy, and there isn't anything wrong with that in the end. Now it's all someone else's problem.
Awesome story and content instantly subscribed and looking forward to more.. Congrats on the connection with the Vice Principal and opportunities to speak for students and children at these schools.. Well done sir.. Stay safe homie..🙏👍💕🔥⚾😷
I inherited a buttload of baseball cards when my father passed away. I have NO idea what they are worth and also feel overwhelmed. This year I hope to find out the worth and get them off my hands. I would LOVE if someone offered me a price to take them all off of my hands. Your story is awesome and thank you for sharing. Ha I also have a ton of copies of a book my father wrote about the Korean War. I have given so many away but still have a ton. I will also be trying to sell these as well. Again, thank you :)
Loved this story! You made a series of wise choices and many Karma points were earned! I've been thinking the same thing- I only buy the single few cards i like now... but I may have to give away several unwanted boxes. Buying less is the best choice going ahead. The cost of sealed product is way beyond reason.
Great story. I've recently downsized as well. I am a school teacher, so I can relate to pretty much your whole story. Congrats on the book and on your career!
Hi Ryan, I know this video is a year old now but I just came across it today, April 2023, and just wanted to say congrats, on everything, the sale of your collection, and on meeting the person that can help you get that beautiful message to so many children who need it. I think this was amazing. I'm going to get your book for my granddaughter, who was born with a large red mark on the side of her face, and she's only 3 now, but I know that later on, mean kids will make fun of her, and I want her to be prepared and to know that "Different is Awesome"!! Also, In the end you ask us to let you know if we have any questions, I have one, what's that guys info, I would love to sell my collection LOL, no but for real. Thanks for the vid😊👍
U did the right thing by not sweating pricing out your cards. Just put the stuff out, let people pick what they want & go from there. It will all figure itself out in the end. Cool story & channel.
Cool story, first time watching your videos. I would of loved if you would of gave us numbers on the sale. My favorite videos are seeing card deals go down with the dollar amounts.
Great story. Thanx for sharing first time coming across your channel. You seem like a good guy. Genuine. Just gave you a Sub. I can relate to you about being “different”. Great to see how positive you are... it’s not easy.
With card prices being so high in 2020 it was a good time to sell. A lot of high rollers that sold for records last February are now selling for 50% of what they went for.
Please don’t worry about the time of the video. Your experience & story was fantastic. Thanks for being authentic & sharing a wonderful story. Sounds like The Lord has really blessed your decision to sell your cards 10 fold!
Nice video man. Was this at the Sheraton in Madison? I stopped by and chatted with you there a bit and then have seen you around town. Glad your video showed up on my recommended video.
Wow you hit the nail right on the head , same dealers same customers . Smart unless your doing it for a living and replenishing your stock . Some dealers don’t get it , they actually want higher then eBay prices .. what ever the comp is on 130 pt you should be 10 to 20 percent lower then eBay values
Nice story but would like to get to the nutz and bolts on what you sold and got rid of?? what years?? what players?? I may need to drop off my commons and semi stars and stars at a show to get rid of them i got about 200k laying around taking up space myself
It really was a bunch of everything! The commons were mostly newer Topps/Bowman/various baseball and some football and basketball. Lots of non-star rookies in baseball/basketball/football and then a lot of star and popular rookies. Nothing graded, no cards over $100 (would be surprised if there were any, honestly).
I have thousands of mostly o-pee-chee hockey cards from 79 the mid 80's. I have several hundred hockey cards from the early 70's. I have a small collection of baseball perhaps 6 or 7 hundred mid 80's. I then have a few hundred mini sport cards, Michael Jackson Cards, baseball sets put out by Kmart stores, Kraft, etc. If you have money to buy and an Interest in checking this out I would love to find a way we can both be happy in a deal. I will make sure you have a high degree of comfort in what you are getting with Pics and Vids. I am going to have my power cut off and eviction is around the corner. If anybody reads this and thinks they would be interested in a collection a Canadian Kid started collecting 40- 45 years ago drop a comment here and we can go from there. All the best to all of you that read this meandering mess and thanks for your time Postgame; I apologize my comment started for you alone and then turned into a sales address to the world. Your number one though Postgame! Hope your a healthy and happy still collecting... If your rich beyond comprehension and hockey fan as well. Thanks for the Video! It inspired me as you can see!
I wish to be blessed like this someday. I am hooked into Pokémon collecting atm but I have a feeling one day I'll be in the same spot you were in. I hope to make a deal and personal connections like you did.
You’re a really good storyteller. I felt engaged the whole time

Me three
Fantastic story. Thank you for sharing. This provides us with hope for serendipity in our every day lives.

No way, Madison! I think we’ve run into each other while I hike with my dog at the trails by the Verona library!
HA! I guarantee we have! Say hi next time we cross paths!

Yeah, I have been doing that for a little while myself. I don't have kids who I can hand down my collection to. So, I'm thining out the collection.
Really enjoyed this and especially the last section on your book as I am the parent of a child with Autism. Just a great story all around!
So glad you enjoyed it! 😁
You seem like a such a nice person!
Everyone has a different type of style of collecting. Some choose quantity over quality. I prefer quality over quantity
Loved the recommended video on my feed. New sub. I’m a bulk buyer myself and teacher. I would love to see the cards in your collection.
