  • After living here for over a year I've finally gotten around to building my first outdoor tortoise pen. What's it made out of? What are the dimensions? Who lives in it? Watch and find out!

Do you have toads or frogs? If so can you do a video on them?

I do have frogs and toads and yes, I'll do videos with them eventually.

Do you plan on leaving them out all year while it's warm enough? If so how will you prevent predation?

Yes, I plan on leaving them out until about October. I'm not worried about predation with the larger tortoises but once the Russians are out I think I'll put up an electric fence.

@@centrarchid my eastern box turtles have my entire backyard. I have chain link fence but my turtles are too big to fit through the chain link. My fence is also buried over 2 feet underground. They have babies every year but I always find the babies before they leave. Box turtles don't lay many eggs. I have a newly acquired female I just adopted so I might get 12 babies at most. I usually catch the female laying eggs and put a screen cage over that spot so the babies don't leave and then I release them where there isn't gonna be any construction, like a state park.

Good deal. Sounds like you have some happy turtles. The issue with chain link, believe it or not, is that turtles can also climb it. Not saying yours will, but some might. I also know that in my case at least, if they can see through it they'll try to go through it, even if they can't fit.

@@centrarchid mine never did. 3 of my turtles I've had for 8 years now and they never got through it. Their shells are too large to fit through the chain link and the spaces in the fence are too large for them to really hold on to climb. My dogs never bother them. My pitbull will try to lick them sometimes then she just goes about her business.
