  • This is the SMALLER mouse challenge. I challenge you to use a smaller mouse for 3 weeks, pushing through the pain of adjusting grip like I did. If you want to know how to measure your hand to choose a smaller gaming mouse: • Gaming Mouse Size Guid...
    Big thanks to Kile from Too Much Tech for taking this challenge, if you want to join him, find a smaller mouse (under 60% of your hand measurements or the measurements shown in the video above), jump into Quake Champions (free to play on Steam), set it up the way I showed, then do that each week, but the main thing is that you use that new small mouse for 3 weeks straight ... don't switch! Just keep using that one until your hand adapts.
    After three weeks, we can all check results. Quake Champions instagib (a mode with instant kill sniper weapon) isn't going to show your exact accuracy improvement but it's a fun and simple way of doing it. You'll know if you've improved by your game play anyway!

    I'm currently using a viper mini without shell, it's around 4.3cm of grip width. it's a Frankenstein monster with pieces glued left and right to match my hand size and shape. I went through a similar process of getting smaller and smaller mices over time because I performed better with them, and at some point I got tired of never finding a shape that felt right in my hand and just started customising it myself.
    I have the feeling that a lot of people find smaller mice uncomfortable because they're not the right shape for their hands, as I've noticed that even just moving the resting position of a single finger of 1mm makes a noticeable difference. Maybe the old R.A.T. mice were up to something..
    To anyone that feels discomfort or pain using a smaller mice, I suggest to try to figure out exactly why it is not comfortable. Compare the position of your resting hand (just lay your arm normally on the table without holding anything) to the position of your hand holding the mouse, you'll most likely find a lot of differences that may cause the pain. Examples: index and middle finger too far apart (due to wide scroll wheels), index and middle finger too high due to tall buttons, thumb in a weird spot due to the concave shape of the mice's side, hand rotated counter clock-wise because the mouse is too flat, and so on

    When I got back into pc gaming in 2015 I was searching for the right mouse for ages. Going back to the store to test the shapes in my hand nearly daily to make sure I didn't waste my money on something that was right for me.
    I saw your videos back then and got the G303 as it was the best for my grip type and hand size at the time but I always felt I needed something a bit smaller. Only recently have high quality truely small gaming mice have come around. Currently maining the HSK+ and have been aiming my best ever with it.

    The size argument is going to be what you are physically pre-determined to be comfortable with. My hand is 21x13 and I thought I'd never like a small mouse until I went to the UL2.
    I realized my comfort with that grip came from playing guitar (left handed so my right hand grips the neck) and that natural claw style just works best for me. If I fully relax my hand, my fingers are more closed than open and I think that would greatly determine people's comfort with a larger mouse for palm grip, versus a small mouse for claw grip.

    Interesting. Using the 3.0 rule the g303 se is basically perfect. All within a 1 MM of my measurements. Funny enough I've started out with large mice, but over the last year I've slowly stepped down in sizes. I actually find it hard to go back to my larger mice now, with the exception of the scimitar for MMOs.

    Hey Zy!
    Love your work man, thanks to your recommendation on the Rival 310 back in the day, I've gotten myself one and have been using it ever since that video came out.
    I'm starting to experience some problems after a long few years with it and I'm looking to get a new mouse. Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me, find a 310 anywhere, I guess it's been a while so I'm looking for a mouse with a similar feel and performances, hopefully by Steelseries as well... Would you have any recommendations? I've looked at the Rival 5 thus far, nothing apart from comfort and performance bothers me, I don't care about RGB, extra buttons or what not... The 310 was great for me as someone with really large hands (22/11cm), I guess that's a crucial factor too.
    Take care!

    I find a sensor I like, in a shape that is comfy, and stick with it as long as possible. I have essentially used only 3 nice for the last 15+ years. The two latest mice both share the same sensor - CM Storm Spawn, which was replaced with a Corsair Katar when the scroll wheel broke. I find using the same setup long term really helps with aim, especially flicks. I have been using the same QCK+ mousepad for almost as long...around 10 years.

    I recently bought the Razer Pro Click Mini to use for both productivity and gaming. At first it felt too small for my medium sized hands. I came from a Logitech Mx Master 3, then switched to a Logitech G Pro, and now this Razer mouse. For work and productivity, the small size felt a bit awkward, but allowed me to navigate Adobe After Effects with a bit more precision when I click on keyframes. It runs on two AA batteries but I only use one to lessen the weight. Some reviews say that using a single battery messes with the balance of the weight but I wonder if it's really a big deal for a small mouse.

    Back at early 2019, my main mouse for games was a logitech g403. I really liked it, it was comfortable and all, but when I started switching to low sensitivity (I switched from 2,8 cm/360 to 35-ish cm/360 and slowly made my way towards 41,5 cm/360), I noticed I had severe cramps on my hand, to the point where I couldn't play games for more than half an hour. That's when I tried my brother's logitech m325 (a small wireless office mouse that's nothing to write home about) and I didn't notice any cramps after about an hour of playing. After getting some recommendations and checking out some reviews (some from your channel), I went with a logitech g305. I haven't had an issue ever since.

    I tried using a Roccat Burst Pro for a few months, but unfortunately my aim only got worse. As soon as I switched back to the g403, it immediately improved. Currently, I'm using a DeathAdder V2, which I'm pretty happy with, but my aim is at an all-time low due to my almost complete break from FPS games. It's probably really difficult for me to use smaller mice due to my physique, although I've seen some grips that could make them more interesting. Do you have any recommendations for a good but affordable mouse? Wired is fine, and I don't care about wireless.

    Hey Zy, narrow mice hurt the joint of my thumb since it's more bent inwards and I have to clamp it harder to feel confident, it's only anatomical I think?
    Superlight was fine in this regard and so is Viper V2, but I had to return the viper mini back in the day, the O- and the SS Prime Mini Wireless for example. I wanna try smaller ones but it hurts real bad and it persists! Not just muscle pain but joint pain. So I think the advice of struggling through the pain is not exactly healthy or right. Hands are 20x11.5cm

  • @OhGeeWhy

    Went on your recommendation ages ago for Logitech g102 / 103 since i needed something on a budget with a decent shape. It was fine until double click on my switches started messing with whole mouse, RMB and even side buttons. So decided to give Xtrfy a shot with MZ1, since my hand size is almost same as yours so hey it should work?
    And yeah its been pretty solid mouse even to this day, I don't play FPS games all that much but I just needed a good mouse for fingertip grip that has a decent length so my fingers aren't going over the edge.
    The only thing I really dislike about it are the holes, it was my first super lightweight mouse but really its not my thing, since I don't play competitive fps games so its just a dirt / grime / dust fest that needs cleaning.
    I do have a bit of a warped pinky finger so it curves a little bit on the inside towards the mouse, i just wish the pinky spot was a bit bigger. But yeah really good mouse for what it is and works wonderfully, the F11 key thing on the top is also really neat feature that I had no need until I started using it, cable is amazing it never feels like you are wrestling with it or weights you down.

    I’ve been testing and collecting mice since the 90’s and I have large hands and prefer smaller mice. Some of them you feel some cramps but only for a few days and then you get totally use to it and have zero discomfort. This challenge is good because people might stick with it when most people nowadays quit quickly on everything which is why so many people have small mousepads and play with insanely high sensitivity because it takes them too much time to get use to low sensitivity which will make them a better player but they don’t want to take the time. I’d challenge people to play low sens on a large pad for at least two months and then you’ll never go back to high sens and wish you had used low sensitivity sooner.

    I definitely feel like my aim suffers but not so much from the size of the mouse, more so from the weight. I have a G502 with no weights in it and it's still too heavy for fast accurate aiming. Prior to that I had a much lighter low-end Logitech laser mouse (can't remember the model) and my aim was better with it. I kinda want to try the G203 or the wireless G503.

      I really recommend trying the G203 and G305 wireless. Maybe it's just personal preference or habit, but I have been using them for years and still find them amazing. I tried to use the G Pro Superlight, it was extremely light, but the rear part was far from the best for me. I'm now trying a quite new one, Hyper X Pulsefire Haste, wired. It's very good for the price, doesn't break the bank, and it's much lighter because of its honeycomb structure. However, I can't notice such a big improvement compared to the good old G203 and G305.

After some research I found your webside and based on my experience I choose palm options, then I bought Steelserie Prime Wireless. Despite being it a great mouse, didn't felt kinda right, so I've watched some of your videos and choose Logitech G305. It feels much better now in hand, though it has worse quality and main mouse buttons are too light (I click RMB accidentally all the time). Not doing the challenge, but I wanted to share some experience :) For info, I fingertip while gaming, my hand size is 18,5 x 9,5 cm.
    I was using the Xlite V2 Mini (extremely similar to the Skoll Mini shape), and I recently "downgraded" to the Razer Viper Mini.
    For fingertip, the shorter hump and thinner grip width helped me fingertip more consistently in the long run.
    At the first 30 minutes, I did complete trash. I took a dinner break, and when I resumed ganing, I immediately felt a lot of better control.
    I think this comes to show how shape is really key - even though I switches to a wired mouse that is 8 grams heavier, I could perform better.

      What issue was on the wireless?

    • @latedriver9019
      @latedriver9019 Год назад

      @RocketJumpNinja Wired for me all had the same issue (disconnect issue), even with a fresh batch and the latest firmware. Wireless developed a double click problem with left click and double/triple clicks on middle mouse. Rebuilding it with some cleaning helped for a day and then the double click issue started again. Latest firmware on that as well. Xtrfy was very helpful for the first returns on the wired mice but said I would need a video proving my issue for the second round of wired mice (2 each for first purchase and for warranty exchange, 4 total wired all same issue). I haven't received a reply regarding the wireless mouse and its been over a month.
      I want to also explicitly state that I have no ill feelings towards you or Xtrfy as I understand these things happen. It just sucks that this is happening to the best mouse I've ever owned.
      To add, I tested each of these mice on a full suite of separate hardware (3 pcs all with different mobos and processors, 2x Intel, 1x amd). Different usb ports on each; all tests yielded the same result. None of these mice have been exposed to any liquids or were dirty by any means.
      Thanks for replying Zy.

      Yeah that is really sad to hear, thanks for patience and understanding. Obviously I and even Xtrfy can't do much when stuff is going wrong at the factory level, but they are trying their best. That said, we definitely want to help you have a good experience so if the support team isn't replying, then I'm happy to take the issue to the main team at Xtrfy to see if they can help. Do you have a Twitter I can DM you on so I can get some details for them to chase it up for you?

Now I use the Kone Pro, which is about the same weight as the Kone Pure Ultra, but bigger. I measured the Kone Pro just now with my finger for length and three for width, and it was exactly the size as the fingers both times :P The Kone Pure Ultra was incredible for the time I did use it thought, so, yeah.

    Currently I'm using the G PRO, I've been using this mouse for about 3 years now and I have seemed to hit an aim plateau (my aim just doesn't reall improve no matter how much I practice).
    My hand is 19.5cm x 9.5cm and I have been looking into getting a different mouse since my G PRO is starting to show its age. Would the Fnatic Bolt or xtrfy mz1wireless be a good fit?
    Some tips would be extremely appreciated !!! Since I don't really have to money to try out a ton of different mice, the one I buy will probably be my main mouse of the coming years.

    Hello guys, I actually swapped from air58 to razer viper mini (18.3cm x 9.5cm hand)a while ago but I noted I started aiming worse. Oh I prefer claw grip but I was using every grip throught my life. claw seems to be the best for now. Unfortunately I developed some weird grip ( very angled fingers almost sideways) so mi right flicks and control overall were horrible. Back to my air58 and much better already. Will try again swapping to viper mini but now I will spend time on perfecting my grip. If you have any tips / anything I should try just let me know. Maybe my whole gaming posture is shit who knows.

    I used zys rail for a long time, but my hand is just too large. I think if you can palm a basket ball, you really need to start looking for larger mice. The deathadder v3 is perfect for me. Its large enough for me to not feel like I am putting a lot of effort into just holding onto the mouse, while still being light weight.

    Funnily enough my first mouse I could aim decently with was a tiny Logitech M185 that is definitely not a gaming mouse. I got it as a gift when I was younger so I could use my laptop for schoolwork easier. After earning my own money I got myself a G403 then moved on to a G703 after the right click stopped functioning. I have 100% noticed that my aim was the best with a mouse barely half the size of my hand. I would kill for a high end wireless mouse nearly the same size/shape of that little Logitech mouse, but for now my G703 is good enough. At least until the G Pro Superlight is on sale for a decent price.

    I find myself aim better with small mice but then there is a limit to how small it can be. I tried mz1 for a months and got amazing aim but my arm just feel pain so much. Then I step up to something a big bigger like viper mini, and xtrfy m8 then found that I felt more comfortable while my aim didn't change too much.

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  Год назад

      Yeah that makes sense, so there's a balance point ... too small and you'll get too much pain, that's why I say try it for 2-3 weeks, if it's painful, go bigger. And if it's too big, you just won't aim at your best (that's my experience anyway). So gotta find that size that's going to have good aim with no pain (once used to it).

  • @LingoGaming

    When switching to a smaller mouse, how long did it take for the pain to go away?

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  Год назад +1

      3 weeks, no pain after that

    • @ClarksonNo1
      @ClarksonNo1 Год назад

      imo there are likely 3 different causes of pain.
      1st. The pain that doesnt matter, this is just your hand getting used to the mouse and working different muscles so causing some pain. This is about 3 weeks like Zy says in the video but i'd say a more safe bet is 4 weeks for you to adapt.
      2nd. Pain from a bad mouse grip, this is not the mices fault buy you gripping in a ergonomically bad way that is causing consistent issues. The bad mouse grip could be not an issue with your grip shape but maybe that you are holding it too tensed up causing stress rather than being relaxed.
      3rd. Pain from just having the wrong mouse for your grip or just the wrong mouse.
      The latter 2 are the ones that could eventually cause lasting damage so try and eliminate them first when trying a new mouse, jsut because a claw grip or something looks like you should be tensed up you hand should still be relaxed when using it.
      I think the reason ergo mice are more popular is that it guides you into a healthy grip without you having to figure one out yourself, but that doesn't mean that you can't have ergonomic grips on other mice, it just takes more effort.
      Also another remedy is if you use your computer for work or school etc using a properly ergo mouse for that, personally i use a cheap Anker vertical mouse when not gaming as you dont really need the precision a gaming mouse offers and it is a more natural grip shape.
      Because no matter what grip you use on a gaming mouse its going to cause some stress because of the way your forearm and wrist bones work, holding your hand horizontally is not a natural position at all, it actually causes your bones to criss cross
      cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0729/3389/files/Screen_Shot_2015-12-13_at_5.47.41_pm_grande.png?602156964602915195
      Like this, i think this is why some people grip their mouse more over to the side in weird claw grips as it would be more ergonomic.
