Deborah “I haven’t cooked in 28 years!” Bannatyne “I’ll do it”. Spot the one who’s been skint once upon a time and knows the reality of the average life.
goldbullet50 If you have to do something, what you don’t like, but it is necessary, and you don’t do it, that is laziness. If you don’t have to do it, and you don’t like it, and you do it, that is stupidity. I am still more likely, that I spent more time in the kitchen, than 95% of people, because I love cooking and eating, and I had a chance of leaving the planning and shopping aside. If you cant see the difference, you are in the second group.
You guys, Gousto boxes are AMAZING. Their recipes are simple, quick, easy to prepare and delicious. Loads of my friends get the boxes and the recipes are great.
Peter Jones: "I think you've made a big mistake not negotiating with me" Gousto currently worth £770m: "Oh really" 7% of Gousto would be worth £53.9m as of Nov 2020 - That's a 53,800% gain.
What the Dragons don't seem to understand is that the highest rewards, require the greatest risks. I especially don’t understand this, considering the fact that the money which they are being asked of, isn't all that much to them.
Honestly, Gousto meals have definitely helped me. some meals don’t quite fit a 2 person portion but they’re unique and can easily be replicated later using a recipe card
They haven't been there for the money and/or expertise, but for PR & Marketing reasons! Watch their reaction in the lift; big smiles-, mission accomplished!
I know right! God this episode made me like Duncan more and Deborah even less. At least Duncan got up there and did a decent job. What kind of woman of her age brags she hasn’t cooked in 28 years! It’s like a 6yo saying they haven’t brushed their teeth in 6 months.
Such a shame, the Dragons missed a great opportunity. Peter's gut instinct and business acumen knew it would be a success. The other Dragons were short-sighted. Peter really missed out. Here are the financials for SCA Investments Ltd who trade as "Gousto". I've been using Gousto almost every week since late 2014. Once they got their marketing leaflets in Amazon delivery packages the business skyrocketed. Cash in bank 2013 £45,601.00 2014 £761,962.00 2015 £4,748,317.00
You're clearly missing the point. Think business, people and opportunity. You have time, or make time for what you love doing. You're an athlete, I know boxers who do the same, they LOVE food and love preparing it. This service is catered towards lazy, busy or people who cannot cook to save their lives. This generation is far too busy and pretty much everyone works and too tired to cook once they're home. This business is perfect.
+Gainster I think the point of the business if for people who want to cook their own food at home but do not have the work life balance to go out and buy it. Preparing food and getting ahold of it are very different and take a lot of time consuming.
They are competing with "hello fresh" but both are very expensive. I've tried hello fresh and for 3 meals(only main course)to pays 40-50£ and size portion as a starter it's not a good deal but how they said, it's not for everyone only 1% of population
Funny thing 😅 I'm watching this while cooking my Gousto homemade chicken goujons and cheesy beans 😋 which is absolutely tasty . I personally really strugle with ideas for dinner so this is a life saver all those dinners that actually only need few simple ingredients I would never eat otherwise ☺️🙂
December 2015 accounts filed shows a loss of £4,837,050 (£4.8m rounded off). December 2015: Cash in the bank & in hand: £7,591,165 (£7.6m rounded off). It's fair to say, the dragons' missed out on a very good opportunity.
Simple end of 2015 they got GBP 9 mio in funding thus the cash in hand the following year but they still needed another 10MIO which was invested December 2016 a completely stupid business that actually should be a cash cow as they get paid for the product before they pay their vendors ,it will never make money just burn it, had a Dragon invested their shares would now be diluted to next to nothing so they made the right decision
Clearly we are kept so busy with the shitty side of life that we no longer have time to read a recepe book and buy ingredients and enjoy the whole experience, but need everything done for us. I actually saw pre-chopped onions in a supermarket this week! Thinking of going into the den with a H20-Door, "Just £99.99 to have your glass of water delivered to your door in exactly the right proportions of glass and water, saving you valuable time opening a cupboard, finding a glass and filling it, drinking water has never been more fun". H20-Door - The future of advance hydration. All you have to do is the fun part of drinking the water while laughing nervously at your bank balance. Yay!
Feeling so smug. My first thought before any dragons said anything was that they will need millions to get it going. So the peanuts they were asking for was worth it for a substantial equity share. 2 years later, they raised £19m in capital....bet the dragons regret this one but their decision was correct at the time.
Goobii Out of curiosity, why are Scandanavians so good at English? Here in Britain having a fluent second language is almost seen as a talent, is English mandatory throughout everyones whole school career there?
Well we speak so minor languages that some things are not available in our native to tongue, so we kind of have to learn english. Also most of our common entertainment like hollywood films and video games are in english, so we learn accidentally learn the language in our free time. One reason why you don't often have a strong second language is that you don't really need it. Everything is available in english and you can survive pretty much anywhere whit it.
lewis morrison We for instance only have subtitles on foreign shows/movies-unless they are for children. Then they have voiceovers. I believe that helps. Also kids start with English early in school(mandatory), in 6th grade (I live in Sweden, not sure about the other Scandinavian countries in this regard) they also choose a third language-spanish, german, french or italian. We kind of have to learn other languages, or we’d be terribly isolated since we are so few.
Haha :D yeah well out language is only spoken in our own countries so English is taught in school as a second language (yes mandatory) since we’re like 6-18 years old. Even young kids can have a conversation in English even though it’s not our first language. Then you e choose a third language, but that’s harder.
I’ve been ordering weekly for 3 years. I think 2020 was an amazing year for them. With lockdown, people were avoiding or unable to get to supermarkets and their menus were often sold out, they stopped taking new customers for a while. It’s just incredible, the menus cater to various diets, you can order any day of the week and there is a constantly changing menu.
Timo and James , I'm proud of you . Wish you the best of luck!!!Happy to know you cie is making millions pounds a year . Diverse your offer !Dessert is an avenue for Birthday 's , party's , Christmas , Easter time,, Mother's Day etc...
Peter Jones made a great point about the Angels passively investing vs his involvement in growing the business as well as his money. I would have taken Peter's offer because he has many more contacts and business acumen to help the business grow!
Good luck to you guys! I kept asking myself during the session why you didn't cut overheads by moving to a smaller office or getting a Hire/purchase on more competitive warehouse location(s).
Deborah hasn't cooked in 28 years? How joyless is she. Cooking might not be everyone's hobby but surely from time to time everybody loves to cook something even if it is a simple dish.

It was a joke. This is a reality show. People are so fuckin thin skinned about the women investors on this show, according to you lot, they should all be extra humble, twice as ready to invest, and never be a big swinging dick like Peter Fucking Jones. Oh and hot, of course.
I never know what I want to eat. I love looking in the fridge and deciding. Also I'm not lazy and have no problem walking to the supermarket and walking back with my shopping.
I've ordered a few boxes from gousto, they're actually really nice with great ingredients, I've tried things I'd never have thought of making myself. Its defo worth a try

Very similar business in the US turning over well over $2.5m per month. Peter Jones made no sense when he stated; By me investing, it would close future doors on financial backing (not quoting). That was truly baffling. If anyone knows what he meant, don't hesitate to reply.
Samara Weaving He meant if he invests, he expects a rich deal. This deal will be such that it will raise the bar too high for the entrepreneurs to attract other investors at the same rate....hence it would shut the door to any future investments.
Lol just finished cooking with one of there recipes very easy, fresh ingredients food was very tasty. Only thing is the price, if it was 20 a box I'll order every week but 35 is too much every week
When Deborah said that she didn't think £90,000 was enough, and that they would need to raise millions, she was right. Between 2015 and 2023, Gousto has raised over £100 million from investors. The value of Gousto as of February 2023 is estimated to be £250 million. So, definitely a missed opportunity for the dragons, but how much more money would they have had to pump into the company after the initial investment just to keep it going, and how far would that 7% have been diluted.
I know about them and I don't even live in UK. Maybe they should add some public to make a general voting from potential clients if they would buy or not.
If you like rubbery vegetables that are presumably purchased past their best, intensive farmed catfish that has been transported halfway round the world (Vietnam) and packaging that is an environmental disaster ( how many mayonnaise sachets do I need to open to make the sauce) then this is for you. Most of the stuff you get in the box you probably already have in your kitchen so you end up buying it again which makes no sense. But clearly from the comments people like not having to think what to make for dinner! That is what they are leveraging off.
14:25 - Their last set of audited accounts show a turnover of 32m (2018). The company has a lot of debt though, which is a little concerning. Hopefully, they can weather this storm and strengthen their balance sheet in years to come. Liquidity is key!
I wish we'd bury the myth that organic food is healthier - there's little evidence to suggest this, and given that most of the pesticides used in organic farming are no less toxic than those in conventional farming, it doesn't have much logical basis either.
no they think with their money. If they don't understand a business (even if it is definitely a good idea) they will put it down because its risky for them personally. These aren't businessmen giving advice, they're investors.
To be fair to the dragons, Gousto may be a big success now but they continued losing money for many years after this. Those angel investors must have pummelled in huge sums to turn it into what it is today. Good on the entrepreneurs, Gousto’s product makes my life better every week. Great business!
Didn’t know this was on Dragons Den! We’ve been ordering with this company for a year now and the recipes they provide are amazing, I’ve tried foods that I’d never thought I’d try, their reasonably priced as well.

bannatyne was implying that deborah needed to get back to the kitchen
😂😂😭
She hasn't cooked for 28 years because that's how long she's been with her husband and he cooks whereas she can't. Nothing to do with wealth.
If you knew where Deborah has come from you wouldn't make that comment. Deb was also skint and started from nothing
What a posh bitch
I like Duncan, average bloke who made it from taking risk and hard work
As unreal as it may sound, gousto has grown exponentially. I was working as a courier and each week the volume just increased.
"Unfortunately, I don't think that you'll ever make any money" five years later and their company is making 5mil a year
Just received my first order! lol XD
mini dwarfdude and yes I work for them and am earning a fortune 😁

The value of Gousto as of February 2023 is estimated to be £250 million. So, definitely a missed opportunity for the dragons, but how much more money would they have had to pump into the company after the initial investment just to keep it going, and how far would that 7% have been diluted.
"Unfortunately, I don't think you'll ever make any money...." This just goes to show. Believe in your dreams. You never know.
If this proves anything as with any business decision. No one has a monopoly on good business decisions. You win some you lose some
Gousto makes MILLIONS!!!!!!!
i feel sorry for peter's wife. Xmas day in the jones's house imagine it. Merry xmas dear. hmmmm yeah you too.
I wish we'd bury the myth that organic food is healthier - there's little evidence to suggest this, and given that most of the pesticides used in organic farming are no less toxic than those in conventional farming, it doesn't have much logical basis either.
But organic meat means no torture for animals (besides killing obv) which is a very good thing.
Duncan's class
I love gousto. Get them twice a month
Love this
Hope they have a pork and beef recipe? Funny, you could get so many fresh business ideas, watching DD. I'm in Africa (Nigeria)
The fella on the right looks like he should be singing with ‘Aha ‘ !
These 'investors' think with their egos. Not necessarily with business acumen.
no they think with their money. If they don't understand a business (even if it is definitely a good idea) they will put it down because its risky for them personally.
These aren't businessmen giving advice, they're investors.
2018 they got 28.5 million in investments
Bet the dragons are disgousto in themselves now.
I’m currently a team leader working at gousto. The amount of orders are still rising!
@Stu Yes it’s good in my opinion. Always busy and no time to mess about. Chances of progression too.
In 2019 they're making almost 10 million a year and have 235 employees.
Gousto 1 Peter 0
Shows how many gullible lazy slobs there are in the UK
The company currently holds £8.2 million net worth if you search for SCA Investments LTD on company checker.
Debora..... I haven’t cook in 28 years sorry love your a snob
I don't have a cook, but I wouldn't want that either. Just go shopping yourself, how hard is it.
thing is why cook it when just have it as takaway , rather have donner kebab that rationed ingredients
That's what I genuinely don't get with that business idea! Do some people love cooking but hate finding recipes?
Hello Dragons , this is Jayce and I am Teemo.
That was for publicity no doubt.
To be fair to the dragons, Gousto may be a big success now but they continued losing money for many years after this. Those angel investors must have pummelled in huge sums to turn it into what it is today. Good on the entrepreneurs, Gousto’s product makes my life better every week. Great business!
not walking away with nothing but with a good exposure and PR.
