Is it possible that plagiarism has not increased but the tools for detecting it are vastly better than in the past, leading to an apparent increase in cheating?
Phil Magness is an excellent teacher and researcher. I am sure there was cheating in the old days, and it is good that we have better tools at least for published works to detect plagiarism. I remember discovering cheating in an old COBOL class. One student had all the same variable names as another student in the class, so it was easy to see that he had just copied his submitted (late) work.
