  • Welcome to Lent daily for the 5th Monday of Lent. Today's reflection is on how suffering impacts our life and faith.
"If He commends suffering to us, it is because suffering contains a great treasure. Suffering in itself is an evil and cannot be agreeable; if Jesus willed to embrace it in all its plenitude and if He offers it to us, inviting us to esteem and love it, it is only in view of a superior good which cannot be attained by any other means-the sublime good of the redemption and the sanctification of our souls."

After suffering from a series of unfortunate health events that landed me in a coma for month, I "woke" up with a grateful heart & then thought "10 steps." I just did 10 steps with Jesus, holding His Cross with him, to comfort him, help him, love him. I am so grateful for this insight, and for the ongoing struggle as I walk the path of recovery. Thank you Jesus.

Our Catholic faith teaches us to take up our crosses daily. Suffering is not looked at as a bad thing instead it is redemptive and does bring us closer to God. Fourteen years ago I was in a bad cycling accident coming home from work that resulted in being non weight bearing on one leg for 3 months. It was during this time that God led me to Venerable Fulton Sheen’s talks which brought me so close to our Catholic faith. My eyes and heart were literally open to everything our faith entailed. Therefore my suffering did not make me bitter but it made me better.

I'd like to share with you; as a child growing up, I believed Jesus would heal & make better everything. However my mother & grandmother would always say these words when referring to some plight of their own, "It's my cross to bear" esp if I asked them why they don't ask Jesus to help them.
I explained this to a dear Nun one day, and she said, "Oh Avarill, Jesus carried the cross for us, let us lighten His burden and carry our crosses."
I shall always remember these words and bless all the wonderful Nuns who have been part of my life.

Uniteing our suffering with Jesus suffering produces much fruit and grace. For children to understand this may be a difficult lesson. However, let's not forget that Jesus heals. Let us pray for healing and the grace to suffer until the healing comes....in this life or the next. 🙏🔥❤️

Oh, yes. It can definitely make us better if we allow it. One of your other viewers said it is complicated. And that is so true.
I watched my husband get sick, and within five weeks, he passed away. His suffering was so different than my suffering. He knew he was dying, and he told me he spoke to God the day he died. It seemed he was ok with his circumstances. But I was entering into a long, protracted time of grief and mourning. I often felt that our Lord had abandoned me, asking, "Where are you?" "Why have you abandoned me?" And one day, for only seconds, he appeared to me and said, "We are right here." (God, our Father, God, the Son, and God the Holy Ghost). It was our Lord Jesus speaking to me. Although my suffering did not go away, I knew I was not alone in my grief. My faith grew deeply. It brought me back to the church with ever greater devotion and understanding. I will never view suffering in the same way. It does not feel good, but good can be at the other end of it. To embrace it is a hard thing to say, a hard thing to experience, but it can lead to a much greater good. Thank you for this video. Blessed be God forever!

"From the moment I came to love suffering, it ceased to be a suffering for me. Suffering is the daily food of my soul."
    St. Faustina Kowalska
This passage gives an image to me of:
Every suffering is a opportunity to turn to Jesus.
If we use every suffering as another chance to reach for Jesus and trust in him.
It's ok to cry and have hurt feelings, but through that pain and discomfort is one more opportunity to reach for Jesus and say I trust you, you take care of it.
Every suffering is a knock on the door of our soul from God.
In a way like you said
Suffering can make you bitter or better
You can reach for the world and it's comforts in times of suffering. Or maybe even burden others with our bitterness.
Or it's a chance to detach even more from the world and unite our spirit to Our Lord ❤

It is truly a mystery and one of the hardest things as a Catholic to accept. Also, I think anyway, many people have trouble with the Catholic faith due to this thought that the way to heaven is through suffering. That’s not exactly an appealing. Life is not easy and it does seem full of suffering at different stages of our life. However, there are windows of joy as well and we have embrace and be grateful for those lovely windows. It’s just life. “Lord, if I am able to lighten someone else’s burden, please show me how.”

Yes ,what came to my mind is Jesus in the gardin , I believe from that , we can for sure ask that the cup of suffering be taken ,but not our will but HIS be done.I believe HE truly does work all things for our good, and I know in my own life there are beautiful lessons I would never have learned had it not been for huge suffering that HE allowed into my life .I wouldn't want it again , but at the same time I don't not want the BLESSING of which HE WORKED because of the suffering. And the wonderful GIFTS beyond measure ,that CHRIST'S beyond imagination suffering, brought us.
GOD is truly GOOD HE even used the horrible suffering I caused myself for a wonderful good .
GOD BLESS love and Prayers 🙏📿💝🐸🫠

A good friend of mine ( KBM) told me years ago if JESUS Died & suffered for US, WHO ARE WE to think that WE shouldn’t have to suffer or NOT carry our own cross? After hearing that and then many years later I experienced several devastating losses in my life and I understand what suffering is and although gut wrenching for me. I am ever so grateful for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! 😇 ❤ ❤

Very true, suffering does change you. It either makes you bitter or better. But we can only become better with God's grace, and learn to embrace it. We should ask God to help us, because He allows some suffering in our life. If He allowed His only begotten Son to suffer, what about us?

Janelle, I think it’s only natural for moms to pray that our little children don’t suffer so much. It’s hard to see them go through whatever it is that they’re going through, whether it’s physical pain or emotional distress. I guess I’ll take this lesson as a homework assignment and rethink my prayers when my children are suffering. God bless you and yours 😊

In my opinion one of the best ways to make it more bearable, its offering it up for a cause. Also putting it at the foot of the Cross during Mass, taking it there in company of the "Mater Dolorosa". This is so easily to do at the Traditional Latin Mass (it almost seems it's made on purpose for this). I'm going through my own big cross at present. God bless 🙏

One other way we can alleviate suffering is, like Simon, help carry the cross of another. Unlike Simon, hopefully we can offer to do it.
I often ask God (or Mary and the saints, through their intercession) to allow me to bear another's burden.
I also add "Lord, I don't what I'm asking, but I'm asking!" Having watched my dad and my uncle, his brother, suffer tremendously physically, also some of my clients, and watching my mom suffer after Dad died and now my Aunt Bernie, who was looking forward to spending time with Mom after Uncle Stan died, now alone to suffer without the consolation of her best friend, I certainly don't know what I'm asking.
But we can ask to help carry the cross of our child or another loved one. Or someone we may never know. We cannot comprehend the cup for which we're asking. But can most certainly keep asking.
God bless you, Ken and Janelle!

I got better after all my sufferings I feel good too I’m not angry because if I suffer I know God allowed it for a reason
He will not allow it if I can’t carry it he knows I can that’s why he lets me suffer it was terribly painful and I can’t take it anymore but I still go on inspite of it
It’s very painful sometimes I asked him why me but he’s just continue for me to suffer but I’m not weak I told him I’ll take it whatever it maybe
I suffered just months ago for a bacterial infection before I get better it took me 5 1/2 months but the results are all good I cried to him and prayed and thank him he’s with me I thought I’ll die the antibiotics were so massive I went to ER twice during a storm I walked up the ER ready to collapse still I’m alive
    No wheelchair available
I think God loves me too much to make me suffer that’s what I know I accept
He suffered more than me when he was crucified for our sins nothing to compare to my sufferings mine was very light but for me I think I’ll die
Now I’m ok I’m normal again he healed me thank God for my sufferings it brought me closer to him my lord and savior 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I too have had times in my life that felt sooo... awful I just wanted to die. It felt very dark and lonely. I didn't feel like praying, just maybe running. Didn't know to where but, just hoping I could escape the pain.
I'm glad I never gave up, and kept crawling back out of those places.
I have found that the more I stay plugged into podcast like this, the Sacraments, Mass, confession, good Catholic books, learning about the Saints, etc, the better I am.
You and I are daughters of King Jesus. We are worth everything to Him. I know it's hard but think upon any and all created beautiful things. You are one of those, and God does have a plan. Talk to Him and Mother Mary. I'll be talking to them about you.
I truly do understand. I pray you'll share your struggles with someone in your life. Look for that person who you admire and can see they care for others. Prayers will he happening from this stranger who does care. 🙏🤲🙏💕💝

I think of another that I love mostly but not necessarily, I speak their name and say I offer this pain for .... We are usually aware of someone else or even a family who is going through a tragedy or difficult time we can offer our suffering for. We can also use it for sorrow and reparations for our past sins. Offer it or uniting it to Christ's Cross, and the suffering He went through because of sin. Hope this helps. 🙏🤲🙏💕❤️‍🔥

I have a question. Is it going against the benefit of suffering to seek relief from it? I am thinking especially of physical suffering and pain. Do we get greater benefit from it if we endure? Do we limit the benefit to our souls if while accepting the suffering and pain we take a pain killer to ease the physical pain we are enduring? This is a dilemma that I have been struggling with the past few years as I have endured migraines and kidney stones and the mental anguish of children who have walked away from our faith and a feeling of being detached from God. We often hear about the benefit to our souls of suffering but no one really speaks on how we benefit most and what to do in the midst of suffering.

    • @davekwiecinski

We can certainly pray for relief! Even Jesus prayed to the Father for that. "Lord, if this cup can pass... but Thy will be done."
We can ask. We can seek temporal, physical relief from medication or other moral measures.
God wants us to rely on His mercy. To do that appropriately is to grow deeper in faith and promotes the Kingdom of God.
      You're in my prayers.
