    Ex electrician here. Electric companies pay the same as Walmart wages for a mobile job that requires to travel different directions everyday. On top of that electricians have to bring their own tools which cost money. Dirty environment, working outside in hot and cold weather. I lasted only 7 months and realized a warehouse job is better and more steady.

    The IBEW in ST Paul and Minneapolis, MN pays over $52/hr on the paycheck. Their total package is around $84/hr in wage, healthcare, and pensions. Highly competitive to get in.

    Maybe we should have been supporting VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF JUST COLLEGE DEGREES LIKE GENDER STUDIES.

    Basically, no one does on-the-job training anymore. Employers have gotten lazy and are asking and expecting too much from newcomers in all industries. That so-called "need prior work experience" for "entry-level jobs."

      because it is very risky to take contemporary school kid and give him really dangerous and important task. He fails it mb not 100%, but even 10% is enough if risk is fire, electric shock, damage of expensive equipment and so on. No one can rely on such an entry-level kid, they all are unusable.

    when i was a young, it was considered bad manners to start a business and compete with the old guys (and presumably their sons who were supposed to take over for them) in our small town. (plus we were taught to look down on manual labor) they sent us off to college instead to do god knows what, lots of us just ended up being laborers for somebody else in some other town. hell of a way to build communities, program your young people to leave the place that raised them.

    Join the local electricians union near you.
    If you live out in the sticks you might have to move if you want to go through the apprenticeship.

    what do you expect when ppl tell their kids to go to collage to get good money it is going to push more and more ppl away from the trades as they see it as crap jobs and low pay

    Not just electricians, even good roofers are hard to find nowadays. Roofing companies now hire only Hispanic roofers, many of whom just came across the border and speak zero English so can't communicate with them. But the biggest issue is they don't know or just don't care about their work and do very sloppy jobs. I had the roof on my garage done 4 years ago. The roofing company brought in 3 Hispanic teenagers (zero English, one's a girl with zero experience and the other two was teaching her how to nail... they were using my roof for practice). Least to say, the result wasn't good with nails exposed and shingles not lining up. Same with the roof on my house that was done just a month ago where I found over 20 nails exposed done by a team of 5-6 Hispanics who took no care to quality... did it as fast as they can and left. I complained to their boss, who's White, but they look at me as the bad guy... as someone who complains too much. Next time you have your roof done, don't count on it been done right... be sure to go up there and check it for yourself.

    its not experience, its just shortage of common base. Responsibility, basic math, accuracy... Its not an experience, it should be learned in kindergarten.
    And on top of it - licencing. I can not get full electrical licence because "do not have experience" - yeas, the last I need is to spend year or two on entry level job. Ok, will do my high level security and data, get twice more money and let sparkies whine as loud as they want.
