Summer is pretty miserable if you don't prepare for it, like all other seasons, winter is the best season for getting impactful items like the eyebrella and ice, autumn is for collecting the basic resources, spring is for farming and pain, and summer pushes you hard to go into the caves and explore
My summer as Wurt went pretty well. After preparing 2 stacks of water balloons and killing the antlion, I just sat in the base for the remaining days, extingushing fires with balloons. That was fun.
Virgin oasis base vs chad wherever the heck base p.s. why are all the seasons kinda ok and summer is hecking deadly? like fall is chill, winter is moderatly cold, spring is somewhat rainy and summer is just sahara desert heat
I hate summer, not because its hard, but because after it passes, it leaves the world withered. Since you have to be near to the plants to update themselves, you find lots of withered plants in lands far from home. So on top of waiting for them to harvest them, now you need to wait for their re-witheration as well. And its annoying bc theyre already away from home and you wont stay there too long.
You can use a watering can to bring them back around your base without using rot or manure but it's much slower, or use a telelocator staff to force rain.
One more thing that could be mentioned is that during summer you can catch the scorching sunfish via ocean fishing, which can later be used in place of a thermal stone in winter by just having it in your inventory. As long as you swap it out in a tin fishing bin before it rots it kind of works as a thermal stone that you do not need to heat up constantly on your travels. This is especially effective on Wurt, who can keep fish in her inventory for much longer. There is also a winter variant of this fish that cools you down, but it is a bit harder to work with due to summer's faster spoilage rate.
When I played as Willow, I used ice cube and waterballoons in case I dry out and I pretty much was immune to summer. The fact that my sanity got messed up quickly only helped with nightmare fuel farming. Also in later years I use telelocator staff to force rain so that I can counter entire season altogether: no withering, no smoldering, no sandstorms in oasis and no antlion. It feels too good to be true but it really is how it goes.
Cave basing is incredible, especially in the summer. Then again, I cave base year-round as anyone that isn't Wurt or Wes. It's a tiny bit more difficult in the winter, but just as easy or easier the rest of the year. It's excellent.
a watering can, Ice flingomatic, water ballons, and luxery fans are your major options for dousing fires and the 3 restores resources that have withered
i never thought I'd learn something new in 1300 hours. wicker mains and wicker in general went up in my eyes when I realised that no wild fires spawn in rains, which basically is super free for you if you have like 5 rain books regening. thanks for the video and pretty useful knowledge! for once I can actually not mega base in the damn oasis.
I hope that dst meashures temperature in fahrenheit, not celsius. Like imagine trying to survive when it's 90°C hot. I like banya but not for that long.
9 years summer exists, 7 years in DST. And people are afraid of him. Ice Cube is an ice head amulet, only noobs with 3k hours don't realize that it doesn't have to be worn to 50 wetness. When you get overheated you put it on for 15-20 wetness and replace it with an eyeglass and you won't have to stand by the endothermic fire or run after the ice thermal stone in the ice box. A watermelon hat is generally invulnerable to overheating by 2-3 for it always cools. It gives a maximum of up to 33 wetness, things get wet only at 35 wetness. (In RoG, a watermelon hat does not cool, they cannot make it useful for 9 years). DST players were given 100% eyebrella and luxury fan in the first year. They gave an oasis, tall trees, the inability to overheat in the caves both in the evening and at night, they gave unbalanced thermal stones (and there is no need to talk about the durability of the thermal stone, it breaks the balance of head and underwear and can be sewn up, that the problem is only in Hamlet, he has so cheap craft). They gave everything to make it easy to live the summer. Winter is more difficult, especially in RoG, where the cold can drop to 13 degrees at night and the trees will not heat you up to 70 degrees unless you want to burn half the trees in the world)
I had a first-time experience with summer with a friend. Even with infinite respawn enabled we got softlocked. We got spawn killed from wolves and burning to death from overheat.
Tbh i don't like how newer players are taught to absolutely dread this season. Which subconsciously makes them rush things way earlier than they should. A lot of the summer issues is literally just not being able to do much in it.
As a Wilson I got carried away in ocean exploration and summer came with me having magnificent beard + lever 3 insulation from the tech tree. Good thing meat effigies exist but I messed up afterwards anyways
Some of these information are only valid for DST and not for single player DS. You can overheat in the cave during summer (even standing under a tree in a cave). There can be wildfires at dusk or even at night.
We base using above average trees specifically for this season. Though when we played last night, we went to kill Fuelweaver and activate Charlie. Woo.
I despise Summer. If I'm using a floral shirt, an eyebrella, an umbrella, I am under a tree and I'm Wormwood... I should ABSOLUTELY NOT be overheating. (Speaking from experience)
I can deal with withering but wildfires is extremely unfun to work with, you need to keep your flingomatics fueled and up, you have to make your light source outside of their range and you can lose extensive resources outside your base if you walk outside and something started smouldering the second your back was turned. You know you did something wrong if the playerbase actively avoids the season rather than deal with it.
Kinda lame u didnt talked about luxury fan tho its such a good item to cool down I mostly use it to lower temperature despite moon staves and I think its kinda underrated
I have a question, how does rain affect summer world? Wicker book allows to summon rains at summer, which is kinda helpful, but im not certain what exactly it does to temperature, wolrd, i think it turns off wildfires (maybe by just cooling stuff?) and withering
Wickerbottom’s Rain rituals, if read constantly, will permanently remove the effects of summer, save for overheating. It essentially makes summer “Spring 2”. Just make sure you have an eyebrella and a thermal stone to not overheat. Nothing will wither, and if it does when the rain turns off, it will replenish itself once you re read the book. Wildfires cannot happen at all. Wickerbottom literally cancels summer. The sandstorm in the desert will not appear when it rains. This also means ant lion won’t spawn, saving you the trouble. I don’t recommend using it as a crutch if you’re newer, but if you’re already used to summer and how it works, and just don’t feel like dealing with it, wicker is the way.
It says in the code summer rain is supposed to provide a -20 degrees. reduction in temperature. but i could not get that to work in game. Rain did not affect temperature at all. only wetness affected temperature. SUMMER_RAIN_TEMP = -20, says that in tuning.lua but i couldn't get it to work plus wild fires and the sandstorm check for world wetness. and if there is world wetness they don't activate.
unrelated to seasons but nobody else has done this so if possible, do you think you could do a comparison between pre-netcode update and post year of the bunnyman?
Kinda off topic but living in Brazil in 2024 is pretty much living in the Constant at this point, winter is extremely cold and summer is extremely hot u.u Good thing I'm northwestern so I kinda have insulation against heat, though I'm allergic, so the cold really makes me suffer. I'm literally a Don't Starve character irl u.u

I couldn't really figure that out since the cooling always overtook my numbers. I think that is only a single player don't starve thing though
Woah, woah, woah. If it's true that any beard *completely* cancels out the effects of Summer clothing items, that's awful. I hope this gets patched out ASAP, particularly for Woodie's sake.
Its an intended feature. The amount it cancels is based off how protective the beard is. Woodies is only like 45 insulation So like with the eyebrella its like 1 second less effective. not really that much. But like a maxed out willson beard with insulation perks almost cancels the eyebrella.
Summer is pretty miserable if you don't prepare for it, like all other seasons, winter is the best season for getting impactful items like the eyebrella and ice, autumn is for collecting the basic resources, spring is for farming and pain, and summer pushes you hard to go into the caves and explore

Literally the only reason I stay at the surface during summer is because of the work time music and I will fully admit that
When I played as Willow, I used ice cube and waterballoons in case I dry out and I pretty much was immune to summer.

I knew about most of these mechanics but never knew the math behind them , very useful to know!
One regular umbrella and 3 luxury fans are enough to survive summer on surface, no thermal stone required.

The last tip about the whirly fan not updating it's state while unequipped is insane. How did you even find that?
I found it while making this video lol at first I thoughg it was wet items provide a cooling effect but no it was the whirly fan being buggy

I thought this was a video about summer and daylight saving time but I wasn't disappointed
do the aporkalypse its a season everyone avoids but is very weird and unique
More like an event than a season, Hamlet already has 4 seasons

I wish I could do it justice that is stuff beyond my diving abilities.
